Larry, what goes around comes around. See these vignettes.

1) ....... Damm, I could write an article,about his misdeeds, but I might get sued for verbal assault and battery. I wonder how that poor Thai guy must have felt while they were giving him oxygen to wake him up after De Leon sent him to Bangkock heaven and Larry was saying "that's a long way to come fro a short night's work." Meanwhile most of us were wondering whether the Thai was going to wake up, as Merchant and the woman beater were making verbal sport over the situation. Two absolute imbeciles who have never tasted leather, smelled oitment or sweat, or hugged another fighter after a tough 4 rounder. Two phonies.

2) ........ Another little vignette about Larry. During the Whittaker-Oscar undercard several years ago, Micky Ward was fighting some highly touted undefeated Mexican bomber by the name of Alfonzo Gonzales (I think). It was obvious the toxic squirt had not done any research on Ward and knew nothing about his left hook. Around the later half of the fight, Micky was getting beat and Larry was referring to him as a runner and coward...and said something to the effect that "the people back in Loweel, MA must be ashamed at what they are seing." No sooner did he finish spewing his nasty venom (redundant, I know) than Ward iced the Mexcian with a lethal hook to the liver. A few years later, Larry was talking about Micky's great" courage." I tell you he makes me throw up. He is a bile inducing little puke who subconciuosly hates the macho boxers becaues he was always too small to man up. IMO, of coures. Aside from that, I don't much care for him.

3)........Back when Sonny Liston beat Floyd and retuned to Philadelphia hoping for a warm welcome, he was greeted by the plane crew and only the plane crewt. He was crushed. Larry, who I believe was sports editor for one of the the Philly papers at the time, wrote something that was one of the cruelest things I have ever read. He said something to the effect that maybe they could use conffeti from Sonny's rap sheet for the ticker tape he was hoping for. I never forgot that. What goes arond comes around and now it's this dimuntive jer's time taste what it feels like to be on the other end. Good riddance. !

4) I remember Foreman clearly putting him in his dimutive (130 pounds) place by telling him he never stepped in the Ring so shut the F--- up! Larry looked like an idiot standing there as Foreman fumed! Merchant is and has always been one who spewed his idiotic and biased comments againts the fighters who put their lives on the line in the ring while he sat on the sideline collecting his handout... He forgot that he was just an employee and not the star It was the fighters Merchant! Not you.

Liston is one of my all time favorites in the sport. Still, I have a certain love and respect for zingers and that statement by Larry Merchant is hilarious.

I often make harsh and funny comments that deep down I don't really mean just for the sake of wit and comedy.

I think your being a bit fussy.. Larry is a character, he rambles on sometimes but I think overall he's a good commentator.. He isn't intimidated by the fighters, so I enjoy watching his post fight interviews the most.. I really just think your clutching at straws here because you simply dislike him.. I have seen that Micky Ward fight, and while it's a fair point Larry may not have done his homework on Ward.. Well, Micky Ward fought exactly like Merchant was berating him for every single minuite of the fight until he scored the KO. It was a vicious hook to the body for sure, but up until that Ward did look like basically a bum.. Merchant has been a sports writer/commentator for boxing some 50 years.. The fact that you could only dig up a couple of instances where he pissed you off doesn't exactly say much.. You tell me anyone who's been a public personality for 50 years and hasn't said something to piss somebody off.. I also think it's funny how you say he hates macho boxers for whatever reason. This is clearly the dumbest thing you just posted.. Merchant LOVES macho fighters, are you kidding me? He is exactly the kind of guy who appreciates a blood and guts type of fight, if anything he is often biased towards the brawler type in a given matchup.. The examples of this are truly endless so I won't bother.. Sometimes being in the ring isn't everything, there are distinct qualities that make a good commentator.. Besides that, Merchant is obviously actually quite knowledgable about boxing.. I don't recall him being put in his place by George Foreman, but even if so.. If I had never seen either of their faces, and tuned in to see a fight on HBO.. I would guess that it was Foreman who had never been in a boxing ring before Larry.. George Foreman was a great fighter with loads of experience obviously, but he said some of the most assinine, irrelevant things on a completely routine basis, and rarely drew an interesting observation about what was going on... Although he was a world class fighter for so many years, Merchant is much better at analyzing a fight, and picking up on the subtle things.. Not to say Foreman can't do it, he just isn't able to articulate it well, as is the problem with the majority of fighters who give commentating a shot.

While I don't always agree with what the old fart says (claiming that Pacman was better p4p than Mayweather because Pac is "more exciting"), but I will always respect people who give their honest opinion. A lot of times he seemed incredibly biased, and sometimes I found him to be disrespectful to many different boxers, but all in all he is a character, he is dedicated to this sport, he loves the sport, he call em like he sees em, and for my money him and Lampley made a great team.

But on the subject of times where he was out of line, I remember one fight he, Lampley and Roy Jones were commentating and they were breifly talking about football. I forget which football player they were talking about, but Roy was saying something along the lines of "(insert football player's name here) is kinda like the Roy Jones of football, you never know what he gonna do" to which Merchant replied "...he might get knocked out" and he started laughing (this was after the Tarver and Johnson bouts). It was a good zinger but it really came off as Larry kicking a legend while he was down, and I thought it was really uncalled for. I'm under the opinion that, although fans should be free to criticize anyone or anything they want, making a joke like that about someone so soon after 2 brutal knockouts was just over the line.

to watch Micky Ward in that fight is just bizarre. I downloaded it without knowing anything about the fight and to see Micky just running around the ring, throwing absolutely nothing was just bizarre. He made Derrick Gainer in the JMM fight look like an offensive juggernaut. Ok maybe that's stretching it slightly but honestly the ref could have stopped the fight because Micky just wasn't fighting.

I don't know about stopping the fight. I do know that if you knew anything about Ward (even at that juncture ), you would think something was wrong but that it was not cowardice. Of coures Micky made it all academic when he iced the poor Alfonzo quicker than you could say "liver." That shot silenced the HBO team...no easy task what with Lampley and Mercant babbling about the upcoming Whittaker-ODLH fight later that evening. A very pleasing ending for me.
