Why Doen't Gatti Get the Respect He Deserves???

Just a question here......I see a lot of guys who Give Gatti the BS about his losses and short comings....Rarely do I hear Gatti Get the prop's he deserves.....

Is Gatti the best technical fighter out there now or ever...NO of course not...He has spent a large amnt of his career blocking punches with his face.....

But truth is Win or Lose he has a good resume...Patterson,,Robinson,,Mayweather,,Leija,,W ard,,Manfredy,,De la Hoya,,Baldomir,,.....To Name a few.....

The guy has never shorted us on effort......Always gives us his all......Has been in a couple fights of the year.....

If Pound for Pound greatness was measured in heart he would be in the top 10....

The guy gives fans anything they could ask and more.....So why is it people always look to point out what Gatti has come up short in instead of appriciate the fact he has always been exactly was this sport stands for....

Heart,,Determination..Will to survive...Showing that if you never give up anything is possible...EG Two time world champion in two divisions....

Not that Gatti is my top fighter as far as being a fan goes...but I do appreciate everything he has given us...Many a good fight in front of the TV to stand up and yell at.....

Just curious why he is under appreciated??........I can name a few Champions that we all wish gave it the effort Gatti has/does......more fellows like Arturo would straighten out some of the things that are wrong with this sport....

Gatti is a good fighter and has fought good guys, but another guy like Gatti was Iran Barkley in a way.. Iran lost alot to the top guys like Gatti and that did not endear him to the fans. Gatti is a very good fighter, but he loses to the top top guys. I think his career has been incredible.. He has put more effort into his fights than Floyd or Oscar probably.. But Floyd and Oscar are great technicians. Everyone likes a good fight, but they like top fighters more who will bring high levels of skill and Gatti is a guy who has lost to the top fighters. Unfair? yes. But it is the truth.

If you're talking about recognition for being the blood and guts champion of the world, he is already recognized as such from most fight fans. I think he gets the appreciation and respect he deserves.
Or are you saying he should be recognized more in the mainstream public outside of boxing for everything's he's put into the sport? If that's what you're saying, I can't disagree with you there. The world owes it to themselves to watch his career fights.

Gatti is a warrior..had some great fights and one of the best trilogies in boxing....he is fan friendly and seems like a genuinely nice person.....all that aside he is not in the elite class.....HOF bound?..No...apart of our discussions for the next 20-30 years?....Yes.....

same here guvnor. i loved watchin the man fight and always say he's one of the most exciting fighters of my generation.

I give Gatti all the credit in the world, he has a ton of heart, an extremely hard head and a hard punch to match. If I see a Gatti fight on TV, I'll drop what I'm doing to watch it, no question.

He deserves respect for his heart, but Gatti is not what this sport is supposed to stand for. It's not supposed to stand for taking unbeleivable punishment, or being destroyed when you fight a great fighter. I respect Gatti for what he is, a truely tough frindge contender, but being "exciting" doesn't necessarily make you a great fighter.

because Gatti isn't that nice. He's a bar fighter...a good bar fighter, but a bar fighter nonetheless. And what, he has heart because he can't dodge a punch?? I hope he doesn't get any terminal illness in his future, but he needs to work on his defense to even be considered a elite fighter in my book. But he does have balls....but no brains.

If he retired before the Damgaard (Sp) fight I think he would have done well to concrete his status as an ironchinned warrior. As it stands now the Mayweather and Baldomir fights and most likely the Gomez fight will distort our memories of him.

The difference between Gatti and Morales is that Gatti was never great. From the height of Gatti's career there is no time for redemption before hitting rock bottom.

Everyone respects his bravery, but I think some boxing fans get on their high horse becuase he's not a great talent, and they think people try to put him in that bracket, so instead they will slate him, Lampley and that do it, its true, he does get hit too much, but I don't think there is one person on the planet who does not think he is a tough guy.

Yea i agree come on Amat you can't just put guys in for entertainment and great heart even though im big Gatti fan we gotta face facts Gatti is no hall of famer.

gatti does have great defence at times during his fights, but at other time he has great lack of defence. He'll do really good defencive moves for a round or two, then he just leaves his face open for big shots for the next two rounds. Believe me, Gatti has a great defence if he would only use it for the full 12 rounds.

I admire Gatti's ability to absorb punches. That's an attribute just like speed, stamina, and power. Sometimes it's the only + a boxer has going for him.

8) He went up to 147 to fight Mayweather and Baltazar that isnt his weight he has his respect just for taking those fights. Now Mayweather has become champion at 147lbs against no real 147 pounders except Baltazer who isnt even from the US. He was a champion in Argentina big difference to a De La Hoya who is coming down and has been getting ready for this for maybe the last 2 years droping slowly! i agree with a lot of what you said, but i honestly don't see why Gatti shouldn't be a HOF candidate, he is a 2 time 2 division champion, and was willing to fight anyone, and give it everything at that, an example of someone that was a lot like Gatti was Dwight Muhammad Qawi, and well he's in the HOF, so i don't think it's out of the question

People seem to forget...it's the hall of FAME. FAME. The most famous baseball players get in to. It's just that in baseball, the most famous players are the best ones.

Gatti is perhaps the most famed fighter of this generation. How many FOTY's has he been in? I mean the guy leaves it ALL in the ring. If the requirements for the hall of fame was that they had to be the absolute best fighters from each and every generation then Gatti would be by no means a hall of famer. But the hall of fame is for guys who bettered the sport, advanced the sport (Gatti practically single handedly revived boxing in Atlantic City and to some extent New England), entertained fans and those who acheived fame. Gatti accomplished all that and then some. Sure the guys' accomplishments do have to be a factor aswell but he WAS a champion. I mean it's not like he spent his whole career on the underbelly of the contender list. The Hall of Fame is for people who deserve to be frozen in time alongside other legends, Arturo Gatti is LEGENDARY. He is this generations Carmen Basilio minus the victories over Sugar Ray (Basilio would have got even if he lost imo). He is this generation's Beau Jack or Tony Zale. Maybe not quite the number of wins as those guys, but guys who didn't have the skills of the elite fighters, guys who weren't world beaters but guys who were immensly popular and left their body in the ring everytime they went out.

That's 10 years and along the way gave us some of the most thrilling bouts a boxing fan has ever witnessed. So we're not just rewarding great fights but you have to do that too.

I love the sweet boxers who are absolutely masters of their craft as much as the next guy and without any question at all they deserve a spot in the hall, but it can't be exclusively reserved for them. You have to have diversity, you have to be able to show future generations a guy like Pernell Whitaker and say, this is defense. Then guys like Ali and say that is how you outsmart your opponent. But then you also have to show guys like Gatti and show that this is how you give it your all and never sell anyone short.

Those are good points but you're taking "fame" at its literal meaning and not the meaning that is relevant to a hall of fame discussion. You can twist around definitions and words, but in the boxing "Hall of Fame" was created to commemorate the GREAT fighters of our sport. Just because boxing has a lot of ass-backwards fans who value "excitement" over "skill" doesn't mean that boxing's Hall of Fame should be different than any other sport's Hall of Fame.

Gatti is a great fighter. IMO of course, but look at the hall of fame roster and Gatti is probably more great then at least a quarter 30 of those guys and will be remembered a lot longer then half of them. And that's just modern fighters. Jeff Fenech, Qawi, Apostoli (great SF boxer), Jeff Chandler, Rosario are all in there, there is no reason for Gatti, especially by Canastota's standards, to be considered not great.

I am not sure Gatti makes it in the hall of fame. I do not know what the requirements are. On talent he is not HOF material. but on his impact and fights he is. Should Corrales be in the hall because of his one fight? Hard to say.

I mean as far as what he has contributed to the sport......Who has given more thrills...PBF or Gatti?....Fight of the year honors.....If you had a choice between...PBF and Baldomir and Gatti VS anyone who would you buy??

The only thing that is underappreciated about Gatti is his boxing skills. He is a very good boxer when he wants to be, but if he was always a "boxer" we wouldnt be talking about him right now.

Gatti really pissed me off against mayweather. He could have took it to mayweathers body all fight. Instead he hardly throws a punch and stay within mayweathers range all fight. His defence was exemplary for the first four round. If he had landed 25 body shots per round he probably would have been able to go the full 12 rounds. He didn't land maybe 2 punches per round. Of course mayweather is going to pick apart a fighter that doesn't land any punches against him. You have to go after mayweather. you can't let him get range. make him run and chase him down. Gatti made himself look bad in that fight and a lot of people were disappointed in him.

Hard to say who deserves to be in the hall. Of fighters now I think Barrera and Morales absolutely. Virgil Hill and Roy Jones Jr. yes. Delahoya yes. Mosley I have reservations about I am not sure why. He has not to me really beaten up guys in a way which get him in the hall. Hopkins yes. Wright? Wright is another one. Just not really convinced yet. He has some good wins but why the hall?Calzaghe yes .. He has dominated for a long time. Holyfield yes. Klitchkos not yet. Lennox yes. Toney yes. Manny Pac. yes. Hearns is still fighting and that is absolutely yes ANyone I missed?

It is hard to figure if Gatti should be in the Hall of Fame. On effort yes. He should be in the boxing heart hall of fame. But on skills and defenses probably not. I am just being honest. Matters.. In time sometimes it becomes clear. I love the guy and he is a good fighter with great recuperative powers, so when guys think he is hurt he gets a left hook in. Reminds me of Iran Barkley in someways.

well as for Gatti being better than Rosario. I do not think so. Rosario was an exceptional guy who fought evenly with cream of the crop guys like Camacho and Ramirez, and he beat a solid champion in Rosario in 2 rounds and demolished him. Gatti had good fights but not the resume in wins that Rosario has.. Rosario had his ups and downs but to me he had a little more skills than Gatti, but no knock on Gatti, he is a very good fighter. Great fighter no but good fighter yes.. Hall of fame? Well I think they should have a category in the hall of fame for fights where the two combatants get in the hall on that particular fight. Then Hagler and Hearns, and Castillo and Corrarles and Gatti and Ward all get in the hall. As well as others.
