ATLANTIC CITY, NJ, May 3, 2007 -- The world heavyweight champion and “baddest man on the planet" has always been crowned in the squared ring dating back to the 1800s. That distinction has been blurred recently with the rise of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Truth be told, it all started with bare-knuckle fighting, two men meeting at a random location with money exchanged between supporters in a winner-take-all brawl. On June 23 Trump Entertainment Resorts, Inc. presents CFFC 5, the “Present World,” former world heavyweight boxing champion Ray Mercer, fighting the “Old World,” underground bare-knuckle legend Kimbo Slice, in the “New World” environment – The Cage, in an MMA bout at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, live on pay-per-view.
Tickets, priced at $50, $75, $100, $200, and $250, are on sale and available at the Boardwalk Hall Box Office, all Ticketmaster locations, by calling Ticketmaster at 800-736-1420, or online at ticketmaster.com.
Mercer, former US Army Sergeant, 1988 Olympic Gold medalist and WBO World Heavyweight Champion, enters the CFFC cage as the greatest boxer ever to infiltrate Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Mercer has fought heavyweight champions from three eras - Larry Holmes, Tim Witherspoon, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, and Wladimir Klitschko. Kimbo, a product of the internet age, has developed a cult following of a series of bare-knuckle fights, seen by millions, annihilating those who dare call him out.
Says CFFC Matchmaker Gary Marino: "I've been working on trying to get Kimbo a fight for the last year. Ray Mercer showed up at CFFC 3 and indicated he wanted to enter MMA. There should be no doubt that this fight will be history in the making.”
Supporters on both sides claim their champion will dominate. It is true that the sport of MMA has never seen striking at the level of Ray Mercer's and also true that Kimbo is nightmarishly skilled and athletic. Mercer has a background in wrestling and has been training with MMA experts in the Atlantic City area, while Kimbo trains tirelessly at Miami's famed Freestyle Fighting Academy. The only sure bet right now is that this fight is not to be missed.
Mixed Martial Arts fighting was created to determine the superior form of man-to-man combat and has since evolved into a hybrid sport. This epic contest will deliver only one answer to the question at hand...the street fighter or the prizefighter? You would have to go back to the 19th Century, to The Great John L. Sullivan, the founding figure of boxing in the USA, to find a real fight of this stature.

Without a doubt mercers got more skills and fundamentals... but the last time i saw mercer he went down from 2 tip tap, shoe shining, doorknockers from shannon briggs. Also this being MMA, I would say the rules are probably actually work out better for the dirty street fighter. Mercer can make the fight a whole lot easier on himself if he learns how to shoot out a front kick.

I was walking down the street today and saw some guy wearing a "Team Kimbo" shirt. I was thinking yup we are a little north of miami here, get a real fighter on your shirt!
What a little marketing and getting your fight vids linked to porn sites can do..
I dunno though it is mma so first clean punch may end it. Kimbo will come out wild and just may catch him. this isnt a boxing match.

I like Kimbo though. And I'm not entirely sure, but I think I've seen him. In fact I'm quite confident, maybe it was just a big guy but he was in San Jose in a hotel lobby at Andre Ward's last weigh in. Maybe it was maybe it wasn't but he damn sure could have passed for him. Also had an entourage and was carrying a breif case. Never asked about it though or got near him in the room.

That's the thing, he was real calm and I didn't see him talking much. When I first walked in, he was in a corner booth with like 10 other people. Then I saw him chatting it up with some other fighters who were there and he was real cool looking like he wasn't challenging or anything. The whole time he had an entourage with him and he was obviously someone of importance. And I kept wondering a bit then finally connected the dots when I was on my way to the hotel. But if it was him, then it definitely wasn't like the Kimbo you see on Youtube.

It's almost too bad that Mercer is the one fighting this guy... I fully expect Ray to just KO the bum and show him what a real punch looks like, but at the same time... Mercer is old, completely shot, and has faired terribly in MMA so far... I know, he fought a couple of real kick boxer types, but in one of those instances he flat out quit after getting kicked on the top of the head just after the bell rang.. Basically if Mercer loses it's because he is really that shot and useless... I wonder if he even has any desire to fight anymore. He may have taken this fight on the same belief many ppl seem to have, that he doesn't actually have to do much of anything to get this guy out of there... You never know, if Kimbo can bumrush him and get real scrappy, maybe take him down, Mercer may not have the heart to fight it out anymore.
