HATTON v DE LA HOYA at Welterweight is on the cards
They both say they want to fight so i see no reason this can't happen 8)
By Graham Shaw www.skysports.com
Ricky Hatton is dreaming of a megabucks showdown with Oscar De La Hoya once the 'Golden Boy' is through with Floyd Mayweather Jr on Saturday night.
Both De La Hoya and Mayweather have hinted they could retire after their superfight here at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, but the two men have also been quoted as saying they'd like one more bout, against the undefeated Mancunian light-welterweight king.
Hatton, given the choice, says he'd plump for a meeting with the 'Golden Boy'.
Earlier this year De La Hoya said he'd be happy to move back down to welterweight if Hatton moves up, a prospect that intrigues the British superstar.
He said: “I don't think they have made their minds up yet about retirement. They talk about retiring but the next minute I read on the internet that they want one more fight and they'd both like it to be against me.
“I think they've seen my fights. They see what I bring to the table as far as the whole package is concerned, in terms of fan base as well. I think the fact they're considering one more fight and they want it to be against me speaks volumes for myself.
“If I had the choice I think I'd like to fight De La Hoya. He's just a massive massive name. He's not just a modern-day legend, looking at all the world titles he's won, he's a legend. He's said he'd come down to welterweight to fight me if I move up.”
Hatton himself is preparing for his own Las Vegas superfight, against Mexico's Jose Luis Castillo on June 23. And he's full of confidence as he starts the countdown to what should be a classic confrontation.
“The preparation is going absolutely superbly, things couldn't be going better. Before the Urango fight, due to TV dates, I ended up having eight months off and that was disappointing. Obviously I put a lot of weight on and that made the job a lot harder.
“After the Urango fight I only had eight weeks off and because of that I think I'm really going to shine against Castillo.
“I don't think my last three opponents have enabled me to look my best. Maussa for example, I'm not sure what style he comes under. Collazo was a very slick southpaw and Urango was a southpaw as well, and they're never ideal. He was very compact and very negative.
“I think someone like Castillo, who will stand toe-to-toe with me in a slugfest, will help me to shine. I still feel I can improve on what I've done already. I think in my last three fights the results have been better than the performances.
“I went off the boil before the Tszyu fight, going six rounds with Dennis Pedersen and 12 rounds with Wilfredo Vilches. On those performances you wouldn't have given me a prayer against Tszyu.
“But then when the big name came along I raised my game, and I just can't wait for Castillo, I can't wait. I was happy fighting world champions but now I'm fighting pound-for-pounders.”
Castillo warmed up for his clash with the Hitman by fighting Herman Ngoudjo on the same Vegas bill as Hatton v Urango.
He struggled to a points win that night, but Hatton says there are valid reasons for that performance and expects a mighty challenge next month.
“I think Castillo had been off for a long while and it was his first fight at light-welterweight. And they handed him a fella who had only 15 fights under his belt, a real novice. With that in mind I could understand why he was laboured.
“I think sometimes you find that little bit extra when you're in with a big name. I think I was a little bit of a victim of that against Urango. And I think Castillo was a victim of it against a 15-fight novice. Castillo nearly caught a cold because of it. He probably took him a little bit lightly.”
But before that massive night against Castillo Hatton will settle back and watch De La Hoya and Mayweather do battle.
He's picking the 'Golden Boy' to prevail, believing he'll have too much strength and experience for Mayweather.
“Floyd Mayweather I think has unbelievable talent. But the biggest fights he's been in were against Gatti, against Baldomir and against Corrales. And Zab Judah had seen better days when he fought him.
“When you compare that to the fights De La Hoya has had against Vargas, against Mosley, against Hopkins and all the other big names, I think that will stand Oscar in good stead. Oscar is the bigger fighter and he's not exactly slow.
“I think Mayweather has been very negative in his last two fights against Baldomir and Judah. The fights were quite dull to be honest.
“I think if Mayweather is going to win the fight he'll have to do it in a very negative way. Personally I think Oscar will win, I think he'll use his size and reach.
“I see Mayweather has been doing a lot of talking and I think maybe he's a little bit nervous. But it's a fantastic match and you'd have to go a long way to find one better.”

Re: HATTON v DE LA HOYA at Welterweight is on the cards
There is NO way in HELL! ODLH fights at Welter.
I don't think his bones alone weigh 147, sorry to dissapoint you people but it ain't happening. Theres better chances of seeing a elephant ride a unicycle then that fight.

I like Hatton hes a good lad and hes good for the sport but I'm afraid his best night came already when he faced Tszyu. I really hope we get a chance to see at least 2 more performances like that out of him, but honestly mate I don't think we will.
Hatton was a maniac that night, I can't tell you how many times I've seen that fight and thought of the possibilities if he did that every outing?
I just don't think he will.

Agreed, thats like people saying Roy Jones is going to make 168 again... NO FUGGING WAY. be nice though, but as much as Hatton has grew on me and I come to be quite fond of his style, I give him no chance in hell against Delahoya ;)
-
Re: HATTON v DE LA HOYA at Welterweight is on the cards
De La Hoya would only have to drop ONE division so of course it's possible, could seriously depend on how Ricky performs against Castillo.
Another poor showing and he f*cks it for himself ;)

Well if ODLH is stupid enough to drain his body down to 147 Hatton eats 'em alive at 147.
Sh*t! looking at his pictures yesterday at yahoosports he looked some what skinny couldn't help it notice his face structure looked thinned out. :-\
But who knows really I said the same thing about Arce & Erik so it might be just my vision.
:magnify:

Yeah! that one divsion just so happens to be 7 pounds DOWN.

Re: HATTON v DE LA HOYA at Welterweight is on the cards
Not for nothing but after what Callazo managed against Hatton, he would be wise to avoid someone with de la hoyas skill that would weigh in 2 divisions heavier than he is. He's asking to get butchered.

Re: HATTON v DE LA HOYA at Welterweight is on the cards
He better get his skates on then ;D
You'd be suprised the things you can achieve when you could potentially make £20/30 million including the promotion.
F*ck me i'd have a go at Bantam for the right money ;D ;D

LOL. I love how Hatton criticizes Floyd's last two fights. Hey Ricky, I sat thru your last two fights, and they weren't too exciting either.

Agree 100%.

Re: HATTON v DE LA HOYA at Welterweight is on the cards
I don't think it'll ever happen, oscar is not going to go down at 147 and hatton is too scared to move out of 140 a division he can barely make. hatton would prolly risk going up to 147 only for a big fight like oscar but why not fight a tune up at 147 for now i guess he too scared to end up losing to someone unknown.

Re: HATTON v DE LA HOYA at Welterweight is on the cards
Hatton is'nt even best fighter on his street ;) joking aside how can he say Mayweather fought faded guys when he fought old faded Tszyu who had 1 fight in 23 month then 3 nobs and now another wornout name Castillo

Hatton targets De La Hoya!
Unbeaten IBO jr welterweight champion Ricky Hatton says Oscar De La Hoya will "use his size and reach" to defeat Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Saturday night. What's more, 'The Hitman' is targeting the winner.

I agree, he walks around at 167 or 170 and was still 158 a week ago!
He isn't fighting Hatton at 147lb. Hatton moves to 154 or forget it!

He won't get this fight. His best chance is against Shane, and in that fight he loses. Hatton is done and he knows it. He is saving himself now for the one or two last big fights of his career. That's why he gave up the belt from Urango. He knows he can't contend at 147, but he can earn some money, cant he?
Another note... if he gets caught by Castillo's left hook & tries to do that tying up and walk in routine, Castillo will punish him and Hatton will not finish the fight. Castillo is old, but he is far from done. He started at JuWelt before moving down and winning the title 2x. The struggle for him was the weight, and now JuWelt is a perfect situation for him.

Re: HATTON v DE LA HOYA at Welterweight is on the cards
I know there are a lot of Brits on here, but honestly, this is laughable. Hatton is unheard of in the states. He's way too little of a name to ever land an Oscar fight--especially given that he doesn't have the personality to play the bad guy, and that Oscar would have to starve himself down to 147. Winky and Cotto both have better shots at an Oscar fight than Hatton does. Shit, Ike Quartey coming off of two straight losses has a better shot. Fat, retired, completely-shot Felix Trinidad does too.
There's absolutely no way this fight will ever happen. I'll take any bet on that anyone's ready to make.
-
Re: HATTON v DE LA HOYA at Welterweight is on the cards
These are the fights Oscar would like. Fighting smaller guys who are slower than him. Hatton is too small for Oscar. If Oscar beats Floyd he should fight Wright or someone bigger to make it fair. I know people say Oscar was too small for Bernard. How is that so? He is 158 this week and really is 5-10 1/2. Ray Leonard was 5-10 and Duran was 5-7 1/2... .. Really Oscar should not beat Floyd on Saturday if you look at the fight on paper. The way Oscar has looked lately and in his top fights, he would not beat Floyd. So if he does beat him it is because of the size. I still think Floyd wins this fight on UD or late knockout. But Floyd better stay away from a tall guy with a right hand and who can jab.
-
Re: HATTON v DE LA HOYA at Welterweight is on the cards
If Hatton beats Castillo and looks the b*llocks doing so then i don't see why not 8)
And as for this weight business, well Sugar Shane is at Welter for the forseeable future after fighting DLH at 154 4 years ago and fighting at 154 as recently as a year ago.
So to say it can't be done is b*llshit ;)

Belive it or not, Hatton walks around at the same weigh... If not more.
I reckon he could make 147.
Not that i think this fight is a good idea :-\

Thats stupid to say Tszyu was his best night. Mosley was written off by everybody until he showed Vargas how to fight. Now everyone loves him again and thinks he's not washed up. Jermain Taylor didn't look great in his last fight, does that mean his best days are behind him? Ricky just hasn't looked spectacular. Apart from Collazo, I can't think of anyone who's come close to getting to him. He beat Maussa with a clean punch to unify. He outboxed Urango. They're not great fighters I'll admit, but nobody else wanted to fight him.

Oscar weighed in at 151 within this week..And thats when he's trying to make 154.. A week away from the fight and with 3 pounds leeway im confident that oscar could boil himself down to 147 for ten seconds :)
Also..Regarding hatton - oscar..
That is a true superfight in my eyes.. Its fights like that that would cement both fighters legacies barring a total domination from the opponent..
I mean.. Perhaps the american audience dont get it just yet..But im confident that he'll win alot of fans come the castillo fight and then the american audience will truely be wanting the oscar fight..
Just the match up in style and the whole concept of the fight is huge..
Guess i can only hope for the best
Peace

Re: HATTON v DE LA HOYA at Welterweight is on the cards
Aside from the chances of this fight coming off being so incredibly slim, does anyone honestly think Hatton would stand a chance in hell?? He would get a terrible, terrible beating from Oscar.. To think otherwise is really out there imo... I mean come on, as if Hatton even has a style that would suit him well against DLH.. His fight game plays right into Oscars hands. A considerably smaller guy with little pop or speed at the weight always coming forwards with leaky defence who is seemingly on the decline ::** Yeah good chance for Ricky ..... If DLH couldn't make 147 anymore, he could chop off his right leg and I'd still favour him to put a beating on Hatton..

I think your spot on if im honest but at least he'd have a real go in the process.

Re: HATTON v DE LA HOYA at Welterweight is on the cards
This is a fight that would never come off. Hatton made a mistake going to 147 and Oscar would make a mistake going there too. The paths are just not on the same trajectory...

If I'm honest... I think that this fight would be about as competitive as if Gatti and Edison Miranda fought at a catch weight of 154..
