How come the UK gets Oscar v Floyd for absolutely FOOK ALL...?

Emanuel Steward has witnessed some of the most hyped, viewed and lucrative bouts in boxing history as the trainer of legendary boxers Thomas Hearns and Lennox Lewis.

But even Steward is amazed at the buildup for Oscar De La Hoya's super-welterweight title defense against Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

"I've never seen anything like it," Steward said. "It's going to break all the pay-per-view records, even the heavyweights."

The fight would be a draw with little publicity because De La Hoya and Mayweather are two of the most renowned nonheavyweights in the past 20 years.

An innovative marketing campaign, headed by De La Hoya's company, Golden Boy Promotions, has many believing this fight can become the largest-grossing pay-per-view event of all time. The fight, which will cost $54.95 to watch, is projected to not only top the pay-per-view record of 1.99 million buys set by two heavyweight fights (Evander Holyfield-Mike Tyson in 1997 and Lennox Lewis-Tyson in 2002) but the record of $112 million generated by Lewis-Tyson.

"We're promoting like no other promoter has ever promoted," De La Hoya said. "And we're bringing in something new to the table with the sponsors. I mean, it's incredible."

De La Hoya's fight against Felix Trinidad in 1999 set a record for pay-per-view buys for a nonheavyweight bout (1.4 million).

"This is the way boxing should be promoted," De La Hoya said. "If Golden Boy Promotions was promoting the Trinidad fight with me, we would have easily done more than two million homes."

Few nonheavyweight fights have created this much national buzz. Probably the last to do so was the Sugar Ray Leonard-Marvin Hagler middleweight title fight in 1987. But that fight was predominantly a closed-circuit broadcast, and the potential audience for Saturday (61 million homes) is much greater.

"It feels like as big a buildup and promotion for a nonheavyweight fight in this sport in about 20 years," said Ross Greenburg, president of HBO Sports. "We've done all we can do to get the word out. Certainly, we've had some of the largest promotional tie-ins in boxing history."

It was originally gunna be on PPV, but Sky get alot of complaints about not showing enough boxing, so I think they did this to appeal to boxing fans in the UK that they actually care about them.

Americans shouldn't complain that we do, they can watch pretty much any fight from all over the world. We get fights selected for us!

I think Emmauel Steward is the most overated trainer in boxing history. He had some succes in the 80's with his kronk boxers, but who has he taken from scratch to be a world champion since the days of hearns and mccrory?

To be honest, if this had been on PPV I'm not completely convinced that I would pay for this one. At the end of the day you pays your money, and I would just be too worried it would be a let-down to shell out cash for it. But that's not a problem so it's free and it's appy days.

I truely dont know the logic behind sky showing this free..

Is it that they hope new people will order sky sports for the purpose of the fight?

Cos they must have paid a lump sum and said we'll show it to alot of homes for free apart from obvious sky bills that already exist..

In third world countries the GOVERNMENT pays for fights like this and broadcast them Via Satellite. I am not sure how they do things in GB but maybe their local sponsors will be paying the bills.

This may have something to do with footy in a funny way because sky are losing 40 odd games to setanta next season so maybe they're trying to save face a bit and offer a HUGE freebie. ;)

For years sky tv foisted shitty titles on their subscribers. WBU and the rest of the lame shit. The subscribers got pissed of and i think thats one of the reasons sky and warren parted company. now they only broadcast what they consider to be genuine titles. they would not broadcast a carl thompson IBO title bout because they claimed it wasnt a real title. Thompson was subsequently stripped of this title.

You know I am actually pissed off about it. I got my mates coming over (it's been planned for months) and now I have had to subscribe to SKY Sports 1,2 and 3 (and whatever other channels it includes) for £16 a month. >:mad

What it is is that they've changed how premiership football goes on tv. Basically all the tv games were divided into 6 packages. Sky got 92 games I think and setanta got about 18. Premplus is, it would appear, gone. Which suits me just fine as i'd never pay £8 for just one match. If you want all the matches though, you have to subscribe to the Setanta sports channels too.
