Why is oscar liked so much?
first oscar is a very good boxer..not great by any means....he's never beaten a prime fighter on his level...he does sell extremely well though..he's not a blood and guts warrior as many see micky ward and gatti...he doesn't fight to the death like morrales and barrera...so what exactly is it that make people dispute all of his losses and not question the victories that he got just because of his star-power...which brings me to another question
why does he have star power as a boxer that hasn't even come close to dominating the sport?

Once you get people to fall in love with you, they'll be there until the day you die. The world fell in love with his fairy tale story of his mother passing away and him winning the Olympic gold medal in her honor.

Re: Why is oscar liked so much?
Come on, you know the answer to that. 100% looks. If he looked like Winky Wright he would not be in commercials, and no one outside the sport would have ever heard of him.

you know at first i wanted to say..unless you're a chick or homosexual what is the real reason to be a die hard de la hoya fan because he hasn't done anything that great as far as being in the ring goes...so i don't understand all the supporters on here not accepting that he got beat by floyd, and how they wanted a rematch with shane after he lost twice, that he ran from tito that's why he lost, that sweet pea actually won that fight, that he beat an old chavez then tried to use his age as an excuse as why he should have been given the fight against floyd...
i just don't understand..are there a lot of guys in the closet on the forum, i don't know can someone explain..perhaps a male heterosexual boxing fan that has actually watched fights other than de la hoya's please help me understand...

:coolclick: Still laughing mao!
The casual boxing fan needed a "nice guy" to root for after SRL retired(F@@@-SRL).After SRL, Tyson was the big sell, but obviously, it wasn't because he was the nice guy.
And yes, looks definately played a roll in Oscar's popularity. Big roll.

I was struggling to find a comparison to this fight with.
Hagler - Leonard? No.
Hearns - Leonard? Not even.
After much deliberation, I have FINALLY come to a conclusion.
This fight resembled...
Zangief vs. Dhalsim
http://www.pwnedcake.com/misc/zangief-lariat.gifhttp://www.pwnedcake.com/misc/dhalsim-float.gif
I'm not saying Zangief is a terrible thing to be compared to. Some people are good at mashing them punch buttons. Just sayin' is all.

Re: Why is oscar liked so much?
i see no one who has really given a real answer about why is he liked so much..i don't know him personally and i doubt that any one on here does too...as a fan of the sport..can anyone tell me why is he liked so much?
because i know no guys on here watch oscar because they think he's a hottie...and there are several great technical boxers that that bring all the skills that oscars brings and have actually beaten A+ competition i just don't get why a fan of the sport would deem oscar as their fav
because like i said, he's never beaten a prime A+ fighter, and he won't fight to the death like morrales and barrera, he's not a blood gusher like gatti, nor has he been the p4p number fighter so what the reason to support him so much

Re: Why is oscar liked so much?
8) Because he won the gold remember. Thats the only reason but has good management and hes smart. As far as his fighting goes I never thought he was the best even back in the day because he dodged a lot of people I feel why didnt he fight Tszyu they were prime? Ruelas Hernandez had to put on weight so oscar could fight for their title belts kinda backwards dont you think!

Re: Why is oscar liked so much?
I dont understand it. I always thought he was a plastic lil prick. Everything about him is fake. From his accomplishments, to his persona. Its all fake. He's just a product of great promotion is the only conclusion I can think of. Most of his fans are women anyways. The bar I watched the fight at most of the men were rooting for Mayweather while the women rooted for Delahoya. I was rooting for Mayweather but was acting like I wanted Delahoya to win so I'd have an easy conversation starter with the women. ;D

I agree with this. But then why is there so many PBF fans. ;D He's never even shared the ring with a great let alone beat one. Delahoya as gay as he is can at least say that he ran from the great Tito, and cried on the floor against Hopkins. ;D

Re: Why is oscar liked so much?
8) Lately though he has fought some good fighters. In his younger days it was his management who made his fights and money. Isnt that what there sopose to be there for? So cant blame him for that look at other fighters they havent all fought the best! Who I have big respect for is James Tony! 8)

because at least floyd is undisputed p4p no 1..and castillo and corrales were in their primes and at one time both ranked in the top five pound for pound and floyd did beat every one there was to fight...except margarito but he's not great anyway so...nevermind him
-
Re: Why is oscar liked so much?
didn't Corrales get busted for smacking his old lady round before that fight? Hardly the best preperation for a fight...you could argue that Floyd has beat (narrowly) on over the hill Oscar so that win means nothing. Talk sense.
Some folk can't win, if you take your time and consider what you say you're a fake, if you speak your mind you're an asshole. Can't win with fans.

diego never complained about being distracted..and you can't be serious thinking that had chico been a model husband the fight would have been different...and corrales was undefeated and on the pound for pound top 5 list...either way floyd has beaten better competition than oscar..and i stress the word "beaten"....and yet all that being said know one can give a legitimate answer as to why oscar is so liked so much other than "the chicks dig him" but what's that got to do with the guys that back him, why do they like him so much?
-
Re: Why is oscar liked so much?
Well look at it this way.....Who would you rather have young boxers grow up acting like Mayweather or Oscar. I wonder....

Oscar fights with heart, he's a nice person, and above all he carries himself with class.....Him, Shane, and Tito will be looked back on much like Ali, Frazier, and Foreman

i supposed so..but one thing that all those fighter have in common that oscar doesn't is that they at one point or another beat prime A+ fighters...don't get me wrong, but i don't know oscar personally so i could care less how he carries himself i'm only interested in what he does in the ring, and when he loses he he doesn't handle it with "class"

8) What do you mean he hasnt beat any class A fighters? Chavez was old but still was whipping everyones a** when they fought. Quartay whats he? Trinadad he didnt get the W but it was close even went up with Hopkens lost but so did Tito no shame there and Oscar didnt take a dive either! Parnel Whitcker! Ruelas! Hernandez! All were champions! Won the Gold at the Olympics! What are you talking about! ! ! 8)

Re: Why is oscar liked so much?
I think it is because Oscar came along in 1992.. Tommy Hearns fought in his popularity height for the last time in 1992 and we needed another generation which was great. So the public embraced Oscar Delahoya. Oscar was seen as the first of the next generation of fighters after Hearns,Hagler,Duran and Leonard. And alot of hope was put on him. Even though he has not really beaten the top guys of his generation, he has sort of directed what fights have been big and who is the guy to fight. He dictated this generations pace. He is different than Sugar Ray Leonard in that Ray dictated because he beat everyone -Benitez, Hearns,Duran,Hagler etc. Oscar has pretty much lost to all the good guys he has fought, but he still dictates. He has more charisma or something than the others, especially to do this in light of all the loses.

Chavez and Whittaker were not prime when Oscar "beat" them -- and the "win" over Whittaker was controversial anyway. Ruelas and Hernandez are not "A+ fighters" (neither is Vargas). He did not deserve the W over Quartey (who's not an A+ fighter anyway). The only thing approaching a "prime A+ fighter" Oscar ever beat was Trinidad (I agree he won that fight) -- though given the way Tito was exposed every time he faced someone with boxing skills, it's not altogether clear he should be classified as "A+". Oscar's KO LOSS to Hopkins obviously doesn't inure to his benefit. Add to that loss the other losses he's had every other time he's gone up against a legit A+ fighter (Mosley twice and PBF), as well as what everyone agrees should have been a loss against the B grade Felix Sturm, and you have a very good, but not ATG fighter (certainly not on the level of Ali, Frazier or Foreman).

Re: Why is oscar liked so much?
8) So what they were the Champions at that time who else was he sopose to fight for the title! I still took Chavez in that fight of course. I lost but hey he had been whipping youngsters up all the time anyways! 8)

Don't change the argument. The post you responded to said "No. Oscar's not like Ali, Frazier and Foreman, because unlike those guys, he's never beaten an A+ fighter in that fighter's prime." Whether he beat an old guy with a belt or a B+ fighter with a belt is entirely beside the point.
-
Re: Why is oscar liked so much?
8) Well too bad for that thats just the flat truth at that time Chavez was the man so Oscar had to challange him if he wanted a World Title! Now if in the same shoes what would you have done to get the top of top of Title Belts? 8)
