Your favorite Diego Corrales memory?
Diego Corrales was one of my favorite fighters, and I'm greatly saddened by his tragic death. My heart goes out to his family.
So, with the passing of this great fighter and to give respect to his life and the great memories he has provided us with - What were your favorite memories of Diego Corrales?
-
Re: Your favorite Diego Corrales memory?
There are two that stick out in my mind. First is of course the Castillo fight. The second one might seem a bit weird but its his fight with Floyd Mayweather and his tremendous demonstration of heart by climbing off of the canvas 5 times, despite the hopeless situation. Many fighters would have stayed down knowing the outcome was already decided, but Chico showed the heart of a warrior and a true champion by continuing to get up.
RIP and much respect.

Re: Your favorite Diego Corrales memory?
Just watching how much heart the guy had.
After he lost to Floyd, he went to jail for awhile, and I thought he would never return. Especially after how bad he was beat. I figured he would waste away because he already had 34 fights in, and was falling victim to alot of domestic issues. But then he came back, and I don't have to explain what he did from there. Chico might not have had the best skills, but he was a fighter, not just a boxer. R.I.P.
I could be wrong about 34.

Re: Your favorite Diego Corrales memory?
I think his win over casamayor after being down is a good memory

Re: Your favorite Diego Corrales memory?
Yeah I just posted something like this in the picture thread as to how I will remember him. My favorite personal memory though is his first fight with JLC. I think I saw it 2 days after the fight. I was in my room, fooling around with OnDemand and I saw this fight. Could not believe I'd missed it. So I'm in the room, eating a watermelon, and I'm paying attention to the fight, and the watermelon. Anyways, by the time the fight entered the 6th round the watermelon was tipped over on my desk and I was 2 inches from the TV. I've watched the 9th and 10th a million times by now.
Another one, one of the things that really made you like him as a fighter, after he got KO'd in the 4th by a bloated Castillo, Jim Grey asked if the weight was a difference. Corrales put his arm around Castillo, said no, and said he was looking forward to their next meeting.
RIP Chico.

Re: Your favorite Diego Corrales memory?

Re: Your favorite Diego Corrales memory?
The mayweather fight, he had so much guts and so much heart...no punch could keep him down for good. Even when knocked out by castillo...he still made it to his feet by himself after the ten count had finished. And his great win against castillo will always be a part of history. I bet if he wasnt killed instantly in the crash, he would of tried to get to his feet coz thats the kinda of guy he was. RIP Chico, we wont forget you.

Re: Your favorite Diego Corrales memory?
Two moments stand out in my mind...
Blatantly Jlc- chico 1.. He just had great heart and ring smarts.. I loved it.. Going down twice..
Spat the mouthpeice..It was cheeky as they come but smart to give him the time to recoup..
And maybe thats what helped him muster that stoppage!.. A fight to remembered always!
And although i know many wont mention it..But for me the clottey fight..
Say what you want about corrales and that he was in against a great fighter in clottey..
Didnt look strong at welter..Had jumped two weight classes and still wouldnt take a tune up fight..
He had a great will to fight the best..And when the fight was maybe even quarter of the way in..
It was quite clear that clottey had chico's number.. and chico just kept fighting and made it an exciting fight..Fought on the inside.. and even with a suspect chin at a different weight stayed in the game to last to the final bell.. and didnt disapoint the fans!!

#376.
Clottey one is an excellent mention. He could've easily threw it in early into the fight when Clottey immediately took control.
But Chico hung in there to the very end.
And not just hung in there to survive, but banged away and laid it all out there. I mean it's almost cliche to say Chico has heart. But how else can you describe it?
Another smaller moment that doesn't often go mentioned is during the PBF fight.
He went back into his corner after one of the midrounds and his corner was pleading with him to throw more. And he said back while sounding close to tears something like, "I'm telling you, I'm giving you everything I got".
I think I really felt for him personally the most at that point.
I mean i love Floyd and I love when he dominates, but my heart went out to Chico at that moment.
A true warrior who gave so much to the sport. It's so sad to be taken away after everything he's given us. I feel like I owe him something and never got the chance to repay him. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way.

Re: Your favorite Diego Corrales memory?
Corrales left fight fans with a ton of memories. Like everyone else said first is the Castillo fight, WOW! Great, Great fight, and GREAT comeback!
I was also impressed way back when Corrales DESTROYED Angel Manfredy in like 2 rounds, Manfredy was still a good fighter then too.
Also when Corrales faced unbeaten Acelino Freitas, withstood all his boxing and dancing stuff, then knocked him on his butt and made him quit.
Avenging the Casamayor loss, and just seein how much he wanted to continue in their first fight despite the mouthpiece breaking off in his mouth.
And most recently the Clottey fight, I mean NOTHING came easy to Corrales. He picked a true contender to challenge at 147 and he didn't back down, he went to war with Clottey and gave him hell till the last round. Corrales was just a warrior, he had more heart and courage than I could ever imagine having. I'll never forget the guy or his great war with Jose Luis Castillo.

Re: Your favorite Diego Corrales memory?
I just remembered the guy (although not the greatest tactician) was a hard fighter and carried himself with class, other fighters could well learn from the way he carried himself.

Re: Your favorite Diego Corrales memory?
Met him at the IBHOF two years ago. He signed a photo for my son and then posed with him while I took a photo. My son got the photo enlarged and has it hanging on his bedroom wall. A warm, friendly guy with a great smile. I was sorry to hear the news of his death. RIP, Chico.

Re: Your favorite Diego Corrales memory?
The one that sticks out in my head is the first Cassamayor fight. After being down twice he battled back to drop el cepillo and seemed to be taking control of the fight when the ringside doctor stepped in to stop it. Chico begged for one more round and in my oppinion if he gets that one more round he wins that fight.

Re: Your favorite Diego Corrales memory?
Being a big Chico fan i have many.
The first Castillo fight comes to mind.
When he smoked Gainer.
Manfredy and Juuko wins.

Re: Your favorite Diego Corrales memory?
I know it may seem wrong for my favorite memory of him to be a loss, but the heart he showed against Mayweather made me an instant fan of the guy, and I've been a fan ever since seeing it.
His courage was incredible. Floyd was giving him a heavy beating and totally outclassing him, but for all the punishment he was taking, quitting wasn't even an option for him. Even though his corner did the right thing, he was angry that they stopped the fight. He was willing to go out on his shield, and thats what you call a warrior. He had the heart of a champion.
I can also fondly think back on his victories over Casamayor, Derrick Gainer, Popo Frietas and his domination of Angel Manfredy. And who can forget his two wars with Castillo in 2005. When boxing really needed some great fights, Castillo and Corrales were there to deliver the goods.

Re: Your favorite Diego Corrales memory?

Re: Your favorite Diego Corrales memory?
Of course the Castillo fight... Me and my Fiance had broken up a month earlier and I was in a major rut nothing was making me happy or in a good mood, but at least watching the Yankees or the fights would at least get me buy...
Well I happened to fall asleep on the couch early the night of Diegos fight with Castillo. All of a sudden I can here Steve the Showtime announcer being alittle emphatic and dramatic enough to wake me out of my sleep, I think it was round 2-3... Well I enjoyed the rest of the fight, the back to back action the war of attricion on the inside. It was a see-saw battle that could of went either way, and then in the 10th when he got dropped, my heart sank and I was yelling at the TV for him to get up, after the mouthpiece went back in the fight resumes, a couple of left hooks later BOOM!! he go's down again. I am looking at the mouse under his eye and the bruising and beating on his face as he lifts himself off the canvas, and I'm thinking to myself that it was a great fight by both men a FOTY candidate, but just not Chico's night.... The fight resumes and my heart is still sunk and I'm thinking he will go down again and it will be a TKO...
Well Diego fends him of a little and then BOOM!! he lands a beautiful hook to stun Castillo and backs him to the ropes, Castillo is fighting back like the warrior he is, they fight to the other side of the ring and Castillo catches another thunderous hook, followed by the sequence of answered punches and then the pinnacle....Tony Weeks waves it off TKO FOR DIEGO!!!!
I dont think I had ever been on an emotional rollercoaster watching a fight as much as I was in a 2min span... to go from the lowest of lows as a fan to the highest of highs, it was tremendous. and I maintain to this very day that I have never seen in my whole life a more courageous showing in a boxing ring than that comeback by Diego, stuff of legends  ;)
Consequently enough it was the next day that I started visibly snapping out of the funk I was in from losing my Fiance'   Thanks Diego  ;)

Re: Your favorite Diego Corrales memory?
To have been at JLC-Chico I, will probably be the BEST memory I not only of Chico but of the sport itself. I don't think that if I go to 100 bouts I will witness something more spectacular then that. I always asked myself if I would ever witness something like Lyle-Foreman or something like JCC-Taylor or Bowe-Holyfield. Little did I know I would attend a fight that would be considedered by many people as the best fight of past years, possibly the greatest fight ever.
Thanks to him & JLC for that.
The other memory that comes to mind is when he beat Gainer in 3 rds. that was insane especially since Gainer went on to become World Champ.

Re: Your favorite Diego Corrales memory?
Good story Cutmemick...
It really is amazing how a violent, often cold hearted sport like boxing can effect so many people in such a positive way.
