There's an Excuse for EVERY Champion Who EVER Lost a Big Fight
I defy anyone to name a big fight the past 20 years where one of the following has not been brought up:
He was past his prime
He hadn't yet reached his prime
He moved up too far in weight
He had to cut too much weight and was drained
The ref stopped it too soon
His trainer gave him a massage the night before and his legs got tired
He hurt his hand
He was fighting with the flu
9-11 had a bad effect on him
His sister was going to jail and he was distracted
He didn't train
The headbutts affected him
The hometown ref let him get away with too much rough housing
He really won, it was a bullsh!t decision
Even though it was stopped on cuts, he was on his way to knocking him out
He was inactive for too long and lost because he was rusty
The guy he beat was overrated to begin with
His corner gave him bad advice

"His sister was going to jail and he was distracted"
LOL I like that excuse, who used that one?
I agree with your point though.
I hate how fans and fighters alike try to rationalize the outcome of a fight that didn't go their way.

Re: There's an Excuse for EVERY Champion Who EVER Lost a Big Fight
"His sister was going to jail and it distracted him" was what the Trinidad huggers tried to pawn off on the public to justify Felix getting anihilated by Bernard Hopkins.

Re: There's an Excuse for EVERY Champion Who EVER Lost a Big Fight
I over trained
It was not a jabbing night for me.
I was injured
I was sick
my dog died

Re: There's an Excuse for EVERY Champion Who EVER Lost a Big Fight
Although i do tend to believe some excuses if they are plausable..
I also know that in fact there are reason's but not excuses, when someone takes the fight and expects to win, then they should win, if you took the fight then your good to fight, like shannon briggs
he called off his mandatory because of the flu or something
now thats fair play and when it comes time to defend his title it having been resheduled
there will be no excuse, if you go through with a fight then you should be tip top
like the tito - bhop
I never felt that tito was too far moved up, he still had mad power and boxed as well as ever,
It wasnt that bernard was too big, It wasnt that the joppy fight had given anyone a false sense of security that tito was a genuine middleweight
it was more so that Bhop saw the joppy fight and rather then got fooled that tito was a genuine middleweight, he in fact saw this fight and decided to box tito in the way that he did........
what can you say, he fought the perfect fight and tito wouldnt have been the same at welter against a dude that good with a gameplan that great
-
Re: There's an Excuse for EVERY Champion Who EVER Lost a Big Fight
Were talking about the actual fighters excuses here......... not the fans,
And whats more no right minded fan would say any bullshit and try convince people that it was because he was worried about his sister after 9/11 had happened the previous week!
Think about it, a huge terrorist act that pushes the event back in the first place,
and a BIG fight comes strait after, they could have gotten bombed there and then!
So theres no credible crap about anyones sister in regards to that event

Re: There's an Excuse for EVERY Champion Who EVER Lost a Big Fight
James Toney Vs Roy Jones is the only one I can think of. James Toney said he was the better man on that night, no excuses.

See excuse number 4. MANY boxers say the better man won right after, only to change their tune later, along with legions of fans/haters.

Re: There's an Excuse for EVERY Champion Who EVER Lost a Big Fight
8) So what are you saying that Oscar used some of those excuses? Ok already he lost by decission leave it alone now. Del La Hoya sure didnt look hurt after that fight not a scratch on his face so whats up with Floyds punches? Must not be all that or he never landed what they say he did! 8)

What about "It was Trinidad's 2nd fight ever at 160, against one of the best natural middleweights in the history of boxing"
Is that one good enough for you?

It was because in a previous famous fight in the post fight interview vinni said something along the lines of when questioned..
Vin you nearly knocked out the ref whilst knocking out your opponent
He replied something like..I had three capachino's before i came out here i wanted to knock everybody out!!
Lol.. And thats where the coffee excuse came from i guess...Lol..
Thats the difference between floyd and roy.. As perfectly illustrated in the paz fight..
Floyd has technique but is a pot shotter..
Roy in unorthadox..But the difference is he threw awesom combo's..None more evident then that finishing combination that dropped paz for the last time!! Beatiful!

Obviously the entire point of this post went completely over your head. It's not a swipe at Trinidad, it's pointing out that EVERY major fight that's happend, there's been an excuse, like you just now trying to say (it was only his 2nd fight ever at 160). Whatever happened to, "I just got my ass whipped?"

Yeah, I'll try to keep up.
And MY point is.... Tito didn't give any of those shitty excuses you're posting after he lost the Hopkins fight. A lot of the fans probably did, but not Tito (to my best recollection).

Again, it's not a swipe at Trinidad (or any fighter). No one said he made excuses. The point of the original post is that these excuses are brought up. Both you or I would be unable to find any big fight where some excuse wasn't thrown around.

Fair enough. And goodness knows there are PLENTY of excuses after every big fight. Some by the boxers themselves............ and a WHOLE LOT of them by their fans. Hell, I may have even thrown around an excuse or two now and then.

I give Tarver credit, after the Hopkins fight that was more or less his attitude as well.Merchant was trying to feed him an out,and he just wasnt going there
