Roachs thoughts on oSCAR fLOYD.
http://maxboxing.com/Kim/Kim051007.asp
So what were Roach's thoughts on De La Hoya's split decision loss to Mayweather after reviewing the fight on tape?
“I know we could've fought a better fight. It was my first fight with Oscar and he was doing very well early in the fight with the jab," he would say. "But then in the middle rounds, for some reason, he crouched down and gave away his height to Mayweather a little bit and he widened his stance and took his jab away from himself. I urged him to get back on his toes and jab. It just wasn't there that night. But I thought Mayweather looked good in rounds nine, ten and eleven, threw some good combinations and so forth. But I think we came back in the 12th. We had a very good round.
"So I thought we had it by a round. But it was a close fight."
Some observers wondered why Roach, who's low-key by nature, wasn't more demonstrative in the corner as the tide changed. Would he be a bit more vocal with Oscar a second time around?
"Possibly, the thing is, obviously when the camera swings to my corner, my instructions are always to take a deep breath to get his wind so he can absorb what I'm saying. So by the time I talk to him, they've gone to the other corner. But maybe I will be a little more forceful, but again, it was my first time with him. I knew him from the gym but working the corner during a fight, it's a whole different experience. Obviously, if we had the luxury of a tune-up fight it would've been great. But we didn't at that time. But I think it'll be much smoother next time around. I'd probably get a little bit louder in the corner and get his attention a little bit."
With the pay-per-view numbers being record setting- procuring over two million subscribers - it almost seems that a rematch is ordained. De La Hoya has had no problems in the past getting rid of trainers after losses, so does Roach expect to wind up in his corner again?
"I think we have a good relationship. I do think I will be back in the corner. Obviously, Floyd Sr. was campaigning for the job after the fight by saying his son lost," Roach said, while laughing. "But me and Oscar do have a good relationship and I tried to contact him yesterday just to see how he's doing. I just left a message for him. I think if he does fight again, we'll be together, I'm sure."
So how did it feel to go up against the greatest fighter of all-time in Mayweather?
"That's pretty funny," said Roach, nearly choking on his own laughter, at the thought. "He's a good little boxer but you can't measure him in the same sentence as those guys (like Ray Robinson and Ray Leonard), c'mon."

True, Mayweather was not really good when faced with a better fighter like Dela Hoya. I can't believe that Mayweather is pound for pound #1. I can't even believe he won the fight. He won the fight according to the judges' card but not on the cards of people who watched the fight.

Re: Roachs thoughts on oSCAR fLOYD.

Re: Roachs thoughts on oSCAR fLOYD.
I am a huge oscar fan but Oscar for a veteran fighter fought a dumb fight in rounds 9, 10 and 11 he was just walking into floyd's punches. I acknowledge that it was a close fight a draw at best for Oscar, and if a rematch happens it will be worse for oscar since floyd will make the necessary adjustment and Oscar is not getting any younger and even in this fight his reflexes aren't as sharp as they once were, his handspeed isn't what it used to be, he is more flat footed than ever and doesn't move his head at all in the ring. Oscar should fight either the winner of Cotto-Judah or Hatton-Castillo, there is still plenty left in Oscar to defeat either of these match winners but PBF at this stage would be suicide

Suicide??? Yeah he may pull his shoulder out of socket from missing a punch, but PBF would just jab him and move away. Don't start with how dangerous Floyd is..... Let me guess he would probably ko him this time around cause he won that exchange the last 5 seconds of the last round.

I didn't mean suicide literally, I meant it figuratively. floyd has been in the ring with oscar already and would know what to expect and although he doesn't have the KO power he has enough smarts and skills to himiliate oscar more thoroughly

When ViolentD was asked not to pounce on newcomers, then that was a flaw....This guy is a tosspot!! ::**

Re: Roachs thoughts on oSCAR fLOYD.
DLH is a smart fighter and could make the adjustments and take it to floyd in a rematch more effectively

i watched the fight and i'm currently watching the fight and i thought PBF won. PBF landed the cleaner harder shots thoughout the fight. oscar barley landed anything clean. those combos look good but all they did was make DLH tired because he was missing.
-
Re: Roachs thoughts on oSCAR fLOYD.
Roach had the right game plan,Oscar could not implement it. He had Oscar throwing bodyshots etc etc so he did well.
-
Re: Roachs thoughts on oSCAR fLOYD.
roaches gameplan was excellent. oscar did far better than i expected. i think PBF would do better in the rematch. this was his fight against a 154lb fighter. people are gonna jump me for saying this but it gonna be like the castillo fights. the first fight(PBF first fight at 135) was close but the second he clearly won.
-
Re: Roachs thoughts on oSCAR fLOYD.
i know i wont have many on my side but i dont think PBF won convincingly, he didnt dominate anything...dont get me wrong i saw him win some rounds convincingly, however if oscar didnt punch, PBF wouldnt of either, throughout the entire fight oscar was the aggressor. Im not surprised with the SD for floyd, but i wouldnt of been surprised with an SD for oscar either.

Couldn't or wouldn't? I don't know. I wonder if DLH's pride got in his way. I actually think he could have won this fight with his left jab, but it looked like he just couldn't resist the urge to hit PBF with something meaningful. The more he failed at that the more fixated he became on it.
He may have also had PPV and the audience too much in his mind.
Further, there may not have been enough trust established in Roach and his wisdom to have the right game plan.
DLH could have won, but didn't.

Well, that's the kind of thing it takes to somehow score the fight in favor of Oscar. But yeah, he could have picked a slightly less obvious round to gift to Oscar.

It doesn't matter what round, when you just got a pocket full of cash handed to you. ;D

Re: Roachs thoughts on oSCAR fLOYD.
Agreed. Tommy Kaszmerick and his corrupt scoring are the only reason there's any fan-demand for a rematch (and more money for Oscar). So he was a good investment for GBP.

Very very good points,I was thinking that too. He knew that jab was working, yet he dispensed with it. A really really stupid move for someone, who in my humble opinion never fulfilled his potential in the big matches

you have it backwards. when Oscar punched PBF wouldn't punch. well atleast not as much. PBF was landing solid counter shot that would stop DLH from throwing his meaningless flurries.

Lets see how you scored it then, put your money where your mouth is.
I'm guessing landing punches on a guy's arm and elbows scores big points on your card huh?

Re: Roachs thoughts on oSCAR fLOYD.
Personally...I thought that Roach & Oscar were a horrible team. I was sitting just to the side of them & Roach looked & bumfuzzle as Oscar did.
If I were Roach...I'd be suckin the fwock up too to get the ride for the rematch.
Truthfully...I hope that Oscar pulls Floyd Sr. into the corner...that would be fantastic...as long as Floyd jr is gonna retire...that way Roger could run across the ring & moon the Predator after Floyd jr knocks Oscar the fwock out in the rematch.

Re: Roachs thoughts on oSCAR fLOYD.
8) That will be one Id like to see P4P because thats what I think might happen. Not a KO but Mayweather may beat him convincingly this next time but they both no what exactly is in front of them now! And maybe Oscar goes for the early KO he is bigger. Just depends how soon this happens Oscar looked untouched after that fight dispite what anyboy says. 8)

:coolclick: back babe.
Watch the FIF & the 10th round when HBO replays the match again.
Floyd stopped Oscar in his tracks & buckled them knees quick fast & a hurry.

Re: Roachs thoughts on oSCAR fLOYD.
PBF was definetly landing the harder shots throughout the fight. DLH would try and flurry and PBF would back DLH off with solid righthands.

He didn't win the last 5 seconds of the exchange. Watch it again, Oscar hit him pretty good. Watch it in slow motion...

One of the judges scored the 12th for Floyd, a round he DID NOT win. If it would have been scored for Oscar, it would have been a draw. So let's not get too picky now...

Stop with that stupid talking point. The fight was TWELVE ROUNDS, not one. Kaszmerick had scored rounds 8 and 10 for Oscar, rounds he DID NOT win, and rounds which NEITHER of the other judges gave to him. If they would have been scored for Floyd, it would have been a UD. So let's not get too picky now, genius.
P.S. Floyd won round 12. Watch it again and see.

You just repeated exactly what i said, thanks But a Counter punch = return punch (by definition). In order for PBF to throw a counter oscar had to throw a punch first. And those counters for the most part, were usually at the end of those flurries.
so like i said before, oscar was the aggressor the entire fight, even the rounds he lost.

I didn't see Floyd do SHIT in the 12th round. I completely disagree with you, hey that's what it's all about right? That's why we're in this great boxing forum. by aggressor you mean comming forward and getting hit then yeah Oscar was the aggressor. the problem was it wasn't effective aggression.
all i said was PBF let his hands go more when Oscar did punch. there were plenty of time when PBF got off first.
