Mosley vs. PBF: The momnetum has shifted in PBF'S favor

Back in July 2006, I wrote that Sugar Shane Mosley’s KO of Fernando Vargas II was evidence that like a perfect storm, everything was coming together......just the right things in the mix and with just the right timing for him to fight Floyd Mayweather. Team Mosley was running on all cylinders and it seemed unlikely for anyone to slow it down. But that was then and this is now.

Since then, Floyd has vanquished Carlos Manuel Baldomir and Oscar De La Hoya. Mosley has beaten Luis Collazo in a fight where Collazo suffered a fractured left thumb and ligament damage in his left hand during the second round.

Sure, against Collazo, Sugar Shane showed a display of effective jabs and great hand speed, once again using feints, quickness, and crafty head and body movement that served him so well in his two wins against Oscar De La Hoya and Vargas. But Collazo is not Mayweather, and Vargas had taken brutal beatings at the hands of De La Hoya and Trinidad by the time he met Mosley.

As SSM gets older, his many assets are jeopardized. Age has a way with impacting speed, quickness, hand-eye coordination, movement, and putting punches together. Moreover, the fact he has fought tougher opponents than Mayweather (Vargas twice, Wright twice, De La Hoya twice, Forrest twice, Estrada, Jesse James Leija, John John Molina, Philip Holiday, Collazo, among others), is not necessarily an advantage at this point. Indeed, the reputation for never having ducked an opponent can back fire and render a boxer’s body old overnight. That said, I no longer believe the 35-year-old Mosley is at the top of his game and I’m betting the ingredients for the perfect storm that existed a year ago have now dissipated. The momentum has shifted in Floyd’s favor.

While Team Mosley may be aiming in the direction of the man with the heavyweight ego, the effort does not seem as energized as it was a year ago. For his part, Floyd said, "First, I'll beat Shane and then I'll beat his boss [De La Hoya]." It looks like he will have to reverse the order, assuming he does not retire (which is a sound assumption). And I believe he will win decisively.

Unless he beats “The Punisher,” tough Antonio Margarito no longer has the influence to force a fight with Floyd. With memories of Hagler, Hearns, Leonard and Duran looming.....and with Cotto, Hatton, Clottey, and Williams in the mix, it's time for Shane and Floyd to............ get it on.

mayweather vs. mosely HAS to happen, imo

mosely beat delahoya twice (once imo, but a "w" is a "w")

that is the fight that cements floyds legacy as an all time great (assuming he wins)
if floyd retires and shane is willing to fight, then there will always be a big question mark above mayweather

forget about hatton, margarito, and cotto. theyre just not on that level.

mayweathers biggest win by far is over delahoya, and mosely beat oscar both times.

its as simple as that

Well, he has to beat SSM and then one other to cement the legacy the way it should be cemented. I'd like to see him fight Williams assuming Williams gets by Margarito.

I personally think it's pointless him fighting Mosley. It'll be the same as the DLH fight. Floyd will win, no question for me.

I wanna see him fight somebody as modern as him. I'd love to see him step up and fight Taylor although I doubt it'd happen. Failing that I'd like to see him dominate another good light-middle.

Mosley is older than Oscar. I also completely agree with Ted that he's past his prime. I don't think Mosley has a chance at this stage in his career. But even the Floyd-haters (and others) who would pick Mosley to win this will just turn around after Mayweather wins and say "so, what? he beat an old, past-it Mosley."

Standing alone, beating Mosley does not cement Mayweather's legacy.

i think the PBF should fight shane. i think shane could be more of a threat than DLH because of his hand speed.

On 2 of the 3 official judges' cards, Oscar didn't lose the last three rounds.

Mosely defeated Oscar 2x when ODLH was still in his prime. PBF defeated " an old" OLDH last week. So why would he not want to fight a 35 year old boxer who same as him beat ODLH? Everything is stacked in his favor. An easy payday right? So why not? He called him out right. He should fight Mosely. I think this will even be a better fight than the one he had with OLDH. What do you guys think?

As much as I love Floyd...there's no way in hell that I see him beating Wright...it just aint there for me. Wright's been too dominate in his class to lose to Floyd. Wright is versatile, cagey, & tricky as fwock.

If you look carefully at that link, Oscar actually _was_ leading after the first 9 rounds. Roth and Kaczmarek both have him up by 86-85.

And if Oscar had won the last round - which, believe it or not, he did do according to 2 out of 3 judges - the fight would have ended in a draw. On the judges scorecards at least.

You are right, people can throw criticism at any of those fighters individually, but if Floyd beats everyone worthy of a shot at him, the collection B+ and A- level fighters makes up for the fact the he will probably never fight a real A or A+ fighters. He's the only one we have right now. Maybe Winky, but I would be shocked to see Floyd fight a guy who will be making his next fight at 170. I wouldn't really blame him for not taking that fight, unless Winky offers to come back down to 154, or maybe a catchweight.

He can't win NOW no matter who he fights, but when we look back in 10 years, it will matter and he'll get more respect down the road.

It's not who he beats, it's how he beats them. If he comes out and puts on a great fight and fights offensively, he will get a lot more credit. I don't favor fighters with PBF's style. I don't dispute their skills, but I don't like watching them. It all comes down to taste, ODH has the same thing going for him in style as his popularity. It crosses over, he boxes, and he fights. PBF on his biggest stages has catered to one style. That's what makes it not good enough. Unless their is a knockout, it can always be disputed.

To me it breaks out like an argument about musical tastes. You can't take a musician like 50Cent who has a specific style and say he's the best musician of all time. People who don't like rap will never agree with that statement no matter how many awards or best sellers he has....

Excellent points. He is somewhere between a stylist and a cutie and fans don't much care for that kind of fighter. Speaking for myself, I love to watch "cuties" like Jersey Joe or a lighter Toney or.... a Jimmy Young take away Ali's strategy in plain sight. PBF is just a technical genius. I'd prefr to see more "cute" stuff in there from him. I have come to expect that I will never see him brawl.
