I miss the Old Roy Jones
Seriously, has there ever been anyone in this game besides Ali that possessed such a lethal combination of power, speed, and showboat tactics as Roy Jones in his prime? In those days, not only was the ring entrance entertaining, but so was the way that this guy would knock his opponents out. There's no one out there like this right now. Pbf has the potential but doesn't have the guts to go for it anymore. Since the Old Roy left, something is missing in boxing in my opinion.

you could be on to something here....If PBF would unite a division he would get much more props as being dominant....I think PBF is one of the greatest ever...but you still need to lock up a division to go down with the ALL-TIME Greats....
-
Re: I miss the Old Roy Jones
Absolutely...And the only division I would like to see pbf lock up is the ww division because it's so rich in talent right now. Anyone who can unify that division in this day and age would go down as one of the all time greats. I guarantee this is something Roy would have done if he were at the top of his game right now.

Re: I miss the Old Roy Jones
Roy Jones was unique. A fabulous fighter. I feel privaleged to have followed his career as it happened. I missed Sugar Ray Robinson and Sugar Ray Leonard(prime), so was great to watch the true greatness of Roy Jones Jnr.

Re: I miss the Old Roy Jones
Who doesn't miss the old Roy Jones? There has NEVER been another fighter like him, and it will be a long time b4 there is another one. People got used to thinking P4P best in the world and seein Roy Jones Jr. fight. Now they think P4P best in the world and see PBF fight and its just not the same at all. Roy Jones had a lot of pop for his weight and blinding speed, plus he was much more unorthodox and entertaining than Floyd is. Whitaker was great, Floyd is great, both were/are P4P #1, BUT Roy Jones Jr. was in a class by himself. O0

CC. I've never seen anything like him before. When I think of near perfect fighters I think of two guys: Prime Roy Jones Jr. and Prime Mike Tyson.

Re: I miss the Old Roy Jones
OK, so it's all been said earlier on, but I'm going to say it anyway.
Roy Jones at his prime definitely has a shout of being in the top 3 boxers of all time, cause he had everything. I just think it is a shame that he has gone on when his prime has faded, and tarnishing a superb legacy. However, if he has the motivation, the desire, and more than that the right opponent, he could still do a Foreman and come out of retirement to get a share of a world title. Roy Jones at 50% will still beat around 50% of the world champions with the alphabet belts.
Floyd doesn't have the one most important thing that RJJ did have, and that is a large and enthusiastic fanbase. Until he wins over the fans, then he will just be respected rather than truly loved as a boxer.

Re: I miss the Old Roy Jones
ROY JONES JR taught me to believe in myself! :'(

:coolclick: I completely agree, Im not a fan of either but Roy had a likability about him and even though I hated his cockiness, he was a good performer and boxer so id always watch his fights. He made fights exciting and entertaining. Floyd simply wins fights.

Re: I miss the Old Roy Jones
i miss any roy jones he needs to fight
-
Re: I miss the Old Roy Jones
I'd like to see Roy fight again too. But he keeps asking for the purse he would get in his prime. Not going to happen anymore. I'm hoping Clinton Woods will fight him.

Re: I miss the Old Roy Jones
RJJ in his prime, was the perfect fighter,a genetic freak. As close as a human being can get to being Superman.

Pretty close to Superman thats for sure, just needed the "S" on his chest and you wouldn't be able to tell the differnce. BestP4P I remember watchin the Roy Jones Jr. vs John Ruiz fight and being very impressed myself. It was great to see Roy win a portion of the HW title. Now if he would have beaten Lennox, THAT would have been fukin unbelieavable. But beating Ruiz was still pretty good. Ruiz, boring fuker that he is, has beaten a lot of top heavweights.
-
Re: I miss the Old Roy Jones
At one time I was a big RJJ fan, but he started thinking he was the greatest fighter ever, talking shit about Sugar Ray Robinson, he become unbearable to listen to " WHEN RJ SHOWS UP BAY-BEE, YA'LL DON'T WANT NONE, I'LL FIGHT ANYONE, ANYWHERE!!! Then Jim Lampley stated that Roy Jones was the only HBO fighter that was given a list of fighters to which he said NO! or Yes! to. He always criticized De La Hoya, yet Oscar never ducked any fighter, Jones can't say the same. When Tarver knocked his head off and then Glen Johnson K.O. him in back to back fights that humbled his arrogant ass, so I don't miss him at all. Many people on this forum think he was unbeatable with post about him beating all-time great heavyweights like Marciano and Louis, ......I think there all crazy.

Re: I miss the Old Roy Jones
Roy Jones Jr.
Arrogant conceited hot dog with vastly overinflated sense of his own greatness. Outstanding athletic abilities.
Brought down by one punch.
Unable to deal with adversity in the ring.
How many times did we see him win a fight by hot dogging it against guys who really were not in the same league.
That shot he took from Tarver cheered me up immensely.
Glad as hell he's gone.

as most people are when someone is as great as roy..someone will always sit back and wish for his fall...but it took 15years and lack of motivation for him to get hit by a lucky punch...
Not to mention the punch would have kayo'ed anybody...and roy got up but nady stopped it...anyway you forgot to to mention how much heart roy had to dominate for 15years...

Not at all There are a lot of equally great and dominant fighters with long careers that I have admired, I just don't like hot dogs. I never said he wasn't good.
So you are saying Roy wasn't motivated therefore he got caught by that punch? I think I remember him saying something about not being motivated. Sounds like an excuse to me.
As for whether or not he was fit, I thought he looked pretty sharp in that 2nd fight, not "way past it" as many would say.

I agree with the part about him being sharp in 2nd fight i thought he looked sharp with his punches he won 1st round easily and just got caught with lucky punch it happens even to the best of em.

Re: I miss the Old Roy Jones
Maybe if Tarver hadn't gotten into drugs, they would have fought a little sooner, when Roy was at his very best. He was still good that night and got caught, but I find it hard to believe that Tarver at the peak of his talent and physical ability beats a Roy Jones at the peak of his talent and ability.
-
Re: I miss the Old Roy Jones
i loved how after the fight during the replay on hbo...larry mechant was sitting next to tarver and said "Roy Jones like most great fighter, get old and lose to fighters who clearly aren't on their level"
that was excellent..i also like how tarver kept running his big mouth about the weight not playing a part..then got embarrased by b-hop because he chose to fight rocky balboa...(tarver would have lost anyway but it would have been so onesided)
