Who Was Your Boxing Heros When Growing Up ??
Mine was Holyfield because he beat the bully Tyson thats when i first started to watch boxing and that fight got me into boxing so Holyfield was my hero when growing up and also Barrera he was one of my favorites and when he beat Naz that made me even bigger fan Roy Jones aswell because he had amazing skills it was like wow when i watched him because i had never seen anything like it before i didn't really have anymore boxing heros at that time because i didn't know too much about boxing then what about you ??

Re: Who Was Your Boxing Hero When Growing Up ??
cc Ice - Evander is a good hero to have mate ! Top flight athlete him.
As for me , my dad had some old footage of Joe Frazier , Rocky Marciano . I loved the warrior mentality they both had . I watched those tapes religiously as a youngster, wanted to be just like that.

Re: Who Was Your Boxing Heros When Growing Up ??
Grew up on Tyson, G-Man, Pernell, and Tito. Always admired Ali and Marciano though. Still the two greatest HW's of all time IMO.

Re: Who Was Your Boxing Heros When Growing Up ??
My uncle Paul. He knew the outcome of EVERY single match. After the fight I would listen to him go on and on about how he told me this guy or that guy would surely win.
When I became an adult I realized that my uncle Paul was always right about his predictions because he never actually said who was going to win. He just spoke a mess of bullshit and confused the hell out of you.
I followed in his footsteps.

But when you look at the fight a case could be made to say Holyfield was abit of a bully and dirty fighter he was holding and butting for 11 rounds and 3 rounds in second fight Holyfield was good at hiding behind the i love jesus and god thing it was a bit of a cover up then he buts Rahman then it comes up he could have been on steroids at some point and watching the 1st Tyson fight he was bigger than ever bulk wise shoulders and back

Oh come on mate i was little kid and i heard he went in prison so i got thinking he was a bully and imo he still is and that is crap about Holyfield on steroids that has been blown out of proportion but anyway lets not get into a debate about Tyson this is about your heros just forget it mate thats just the way i thought  8)

Evander would retaliate.. Tyson would start a foul, and Evander would finish it, Mike was not accustom to having an opponent come right back at him . You closely look at any footage of Tyson -vs.- Holyfield you see it’s Mike leaning in with his head with the intent to foul, not Evander .

notice where Tyson's hands are during this exchange .. Mike was moving inonly to throw the head butt. Tyson never intended to throw a punch in this exchange.

Jorge Paez a true showman were'nt he in circus at one point

Re: Who Was Your Boxing Heros When Growing Up ??
Frank Bruno and Chris Eubank were my favourite fighters growing up, then Nigel Benn.
To be honest growing up in the UK 20 years ago without Sky and without the internet you just never got to see fighters from overseas. Only the big names like Tyson, Ray Leonard, Hearns, Hagler and Duran were well known back then.

Spot on and as a kid I got a chance to see the circus...
I was living in Mexico and going to school there...
By this time he was already boxing but I met his mom 2 sisters and some cousins....
:)
His nickname 'Maromero' translates to the 'Sommersault' ;)

Re: Who Was Your Boxing Heros When Growing Up ??
when i wa really really young, i remember waking up in the middle of the night, because of som noise, and on tv tyson vs bruno was about to start, i cant remember the year excatly, but that really made an impression..
always thought of tyson, as beeing one of the most skillfulled boxers ever, alot of people only talk about tysons power, but the speed, his reflexes, his movement and his timing is really something people tend to forget... for a guy of his size was simply amazing..
-
Re: Who Was Your Boxing Heros When Growing Up ??
Another one for me was Boom Boom Mancini, wasnt the most technically proficient fighter, wasnt the fastest fighter, but he had the absolute heart of a lion
Also adored Larry Holmes,I might have been the only person not named Larry Holmes, that thought he was going to kick Cooney's butt.Hated the Ali/Holmes fight, because it was one of my idols at the end of his road, and a burgeoning new one
Everybody knew what the result of that one was going to be,and I for one didnt want to see it

Re: Who Was Your Boxing Heros When Growing Up ??
Hero when I was growing up was Michael Carbajal, fire running through the veins and all, did wonders for the lighter divisions.
Always liked watching Riddick Bowe fight, cause I was really into wrestling at the time, and shit seemed to go down every time he fought.

Re: Who Was Your Boxing Heros When Growing Up ??
Sugar Ray Robinson & ofcourse Ali when I was young. Coming up through the years it was Hopkins (aka: the Terror), RJJ, Winky, Oscar, Lewis, Floyd, & Calzaghe.
Now...still Hopkins, Floyd, & Winky.

Sugar Ray Leonard
Mike Tyson
George Foreman(During his Comeback)
Evander Holyfield
Jeff Lacy
Floyd Mayweather jr
Leonard when I 1st started following Boxing, then Mike Tyson, Followed By George Foreman and then Evander Holyfield ever since.....
Worst fight for me to watch and root for was Foreman vs Holyfield, I felt like I was betraying one by picking the other... So I went with big George since it was an incredible story and the man had heart, he had the strength, confidence and steadiness of a father figure when he spoke you listened, Call his comeback a PR stunt, call it a feel good story but George won me over and finally shut up all the detractors by KO'ING Michael Moorer... Glad he was able to get a measure recompense for what happened on October 30th 1974 in Zaire

I started taking Foremans comeback seriously during the Guido Trane fight, for 5 rounds he just abused the guy, when they finally stopped the fight in 5th Trane face was reduced to wreckage, everything that could be broken,or cut, was.
Guy went from Italian Heavyeight Champ to retired in 5 short rounds
And that was just a tune up bought for Big George
