Tony Oakey v Steve Spartacus (British Light Heavy Title) RBR
Good Day one and all, and welcome to another Friday night's boxing.
Tonight's entertainment was a bit of a last-minute job, as Peter Oboh, who held the belt for three years without a fight, pulled out of a bout with Tony Oakey one hour before they were due to get in the ring. He was immediately stripped of the belt by the British Boxing Board of Control, who promised Oakey another shot, and here it is. That was three weeks ago, and since then this bout for the vacant title was organised, with the winner's next fight against mandatory contender Brian Magee before the end of October.
The tale of the records gives us a fairly balanced fight for me, showing:
Tony Oakey (23-2, 5KOs) is one looking to resurrect his career after a very promising start saw him claim the WBU Light Heavy title and Commonwealth Light Heavy title, and seemed to be progressing well towards and European challenge, when an unexpected loss to Matthew Barney in his fifth defence of the WBU title derailed everything. Added to that, Oakey's blood was found to contain traces of cocaine, and a 12 month ban added to his anguish. Shortly after his return he lost out again in a contraversial 96-95 defeat for the English Light Heavy title against Peter Haymer, judged by referee Grant Wallis. Since that defeat in 2005, Oakey has been recovering, with four points victories. His last win was a March runout against Josip Jalucic in a wide points win.
Steven Spartacus (19-3, 11 KOs) - Spartacus (real name Steven Smith) is well known for his "gladiator" image, and is also a former victim of Peter Haymer, and is coming off a defeat to Ayittey Powers in December. He'll be coming in glad to have a shot at the title, even if it is at short notice, and will be hoping to make the most of his chance. A former British Masters champ, and the former English title holder, he shares a lot of the same names on his record as Oakey does, and being slightly taller will also help.
Even though Spartacus seems to hold the more power of both fighters, I feel Oakey's experience will prove the difference as he gets a points victory.
Also on the bill is Peter Haymer, who had been scheduled to fight Spartacus on the undercard, the return of Lenny Daws, and the rematch of the fantastic scrap between George Hillyard and Tony Rendall that was a four-round wonder back in january.
10pm UK time, so I think that's 5pm EST, and the rest of you will have to do your own maths ;)

Re: Tony Oakey v Steve Spartacus (British Light Heavy Title) RBR
Eyes down look in folks, we're getting ready for the fight, and naturally Sky decided to open the show with a cheesy montage of Steve saying "I am spartacus" from three or four different angles. Not exactly original, but I'm looking forward to this one, although the clips of Oakey show him rattled he also looks come forward fighter, along with Steve Spartacus, so it should be entertaining. Spartacus is being accompanied by two rather sheepish looking guys dressed as Roman legionnaires on the way to the ring. Nice Gladiator outfit though. Awaiting Maximus Decimus Meridius quotes....
-
Re: Tony Oakey v Steve Spartacus (British Light Heavy Title) RBR
Spartacus couldn't quite hold that roman sneer, breaking into a grin, but he looks well focussed, and gets a few boos and a few cheers on the way in. Strange observation perhaps...but hehas a long tongue.
Tony Oakey goes for the boring robe for the walk in....but comes in to the classic end-of-the-night cheesy dance tune.."Do the Oakey-Cokey". I'm telling you, that's what it's all about. I am putting my left leg in and my left leg out as we speak.

Re: Tony Oakey v Steve Spartacus (British Light Heavy Title) RBR
Oakey doesn't look as though he's had to burn off to much to get down to the weight, and at 31, you doubt that he would want to be donning the sweat suit too often. Carl Froch is at ringside, and looking rather stern...he'll have an interview on TV later.
Round 1:
They trade jabs early on. Body shot from Spartacus, but Oakey is finding gloves with his reply. Wild uppercut from Spartacuas misses. They're trading well early on, with jabs ruling the roost. Not getting right in though, Spartacus throwing a bit more, and an uppercut. Oakey's jabs fall short. Oakey steps past a jab to drop in a jab then a straight. Oakey's jab finding the mark, then a decent uppercut. Good right and left hook from Spartacus, but Oakey returns his own hook.
Oakey edged that one, but a positive start for both fighters.

Re: Tony Oakey v Steve Spartacus (British Light Heavy Title) RBR
Round 2:
They trade jabs well, and a good flurry of hooks from Oakey. Spartacus covering up a bit more now. Nice Spartacus uppercut, but Oakey returns a jab, body shot, then a straight right up top.. Oakey looking the better, but Spartacus lands a pari of body shots. Good right hook from Oakey. Good straight right, then a body shot from Spartacus, but Oakey is doing the hard work, throwing out many more jabs and hooks iat this early stage. Hook from Spartacus, returned by Oakey. Neither man looking to clinch, just throw constantly. Oakey with a decent hook, but warned by the ref for leading with the head.
Oakey's bright start continues.

Re: Tony Oakey v Steve Spartacus (British Light Heavy Title) RBR
Round 3:
Hard short left hook from Oakey, and Spartacus looks rocked. AN uppercut misses, but Spartacuse copvers up for a while to recover. Spartacus looks the bigger man, but Oakey is the boxer. Spartacus landing the jab well. And a good uppercut, but Oakey replies with a jab, overhand right, then another jab. They trade body shots, and Oakey lands a hook as they back off from each other. Good straight right from Spartacus. And another. Oakey flinging out the jabs, missing, but alands a right. Two good body shots from Oakey, Spartacus jab catches Oakey on the way in. They touch gloves at the end of that round.
Oakey still looking superior, but Spartacus dragging himself back into this one.

Re: Tony Oakey v Steve Spartacus (British Light Heavy Title) RBR
Round 4:
Spartacus uppercut. Big right hook from Spartacus, after good jabs from Oakey. His guard catches a few Oakey shots, but a nice right hook gets through. Another uppercut knocks Oakey's head back. Oakey's still jabbing Good left hook then right from Oakey. Another Spartacus uppercut. 7 unanswered jabs from Oakey. Uppercut and jab from Oakey. Spartacus with the uppercut getting through well again. Very hard straight right from Spartacus, but then the ref has a word for following through with the elbows. Good right from Oakey, but the Spartacus puts in two decent jabs. Oakey jabs again. Spartacus takes a lot of shots on the gloves.
Oakey 40-36
-
Re: Tony Oakey v Steve Spartacus (British Light Heavy Title) RBR
Round 5:
Nice right hook from Spartacus. Oakey's jabbing a lot, but many being caught on the gloves. Spartacus looking a little better now. Oaeky gets caught with a body shot, but then throws out two jabs. Good Oakey right hook to the body. spartacus looses three body shots of his own. Spartacus is thrusting out his elbows to catche the punches. Oakey looks decent with his hooks, and jabs. Good hard right from Spartacus, but he needs more than one shot. Oakey is landing punches in bunches, and his jab,jab right combo is seeing the straight right get through every time.
Another Oakey round.

Re: Tony Oakey v Steve Spartacus (British Light Heavy Title) RBR
Round 6:
Four unanswered Oakey jabs. Then a hard body shots lands on Spartacus. Good jab, right, jab from Spartacus. Uppercut digs into the Oakey body. Oakey with a flurry, but then Spartacus returns some of his own. Oakey regains the initiative, with some fine long jabs. Good jab, straight jab again from Oaey, and Spartacus doesn't seem to have the energy to match him. Oakey uppercut, and Spartacus not getting any time. Good right andSpartacus backs off towards the ropes. Although Spartacus not doing too much, Oakey can't seem to step it up with a huge flurry to tempt the ref to step in.
Oakey 60-54

Re: Tony Oakey v Steve Spartacus (British Light Heavy Title) RBR
Round 7:
Oakey again with that jab. Sparacus isn't protecting his head enugh. Hard right from Spartacus. Oakey flurry with three jabs then a right hook this time. Spartacus seems to be out by himself there tonight. Just one guy saying "I am Spartacus". Oakey has dominated and is throwing body shots, jabs and hooks with token punches coming back. Nice short right from Spartacus. Hard right from Oakey, and Spartacus lolls back on the ropes with gloves down. Body shot and a hook from Spartacus. Two Spartacus jabs returns in kind from Oakey. Hook to the body from Spartacus.
Oakey 70-63

Re: Tony Oakey v Steve Spartacus (British Light Heavy Title) RBR
Round 8:
Spartacus with some looping hooks, but Oakey is spurred in with two jabs then two hard body shots. Spartacus jabs, then Oakey lands hooks and body shots. Spartacus still trying to figure this out. Oakey with jabs then a good cross. Big right from Spartacus rattles Oakey, but he gets right back in ther with jabs and a body shot. Jab hook from Oakey. Spartacus digs a left to the body, but Oakey comes back with a flurry of jabs again. Spartacus looks to piun Oakey in the corner, landing a decent hook, but Oakey swivels out, with some overhand rights of his own.
Oakey at a shutout at the moment.

Re: Tony Oakey v Steve Spartacus (British Light Heavy Title) RBR
Round 9:
Good uppercut from Spartacus but Oakey is pinging in the jabs. Spartacus picking it up, with a hard left, then a hook. Oakey sends some hooks back, but Spartacus lands a pair of his own hard shots. Ref warns them both for clash of heads. Good right from Oakey, and Spartacus is looking exhausted now, and Oakey lands some more hooks, and the jabs still peppering in. Body shot from Spartacus, but Oakey piuns him back on the ropes with body shots. Spartacus lands a low blow, but then two hooks, and Oakey swivels and now Spartacus on the ropes wioth hooks and body shots from Oakey. Spartacus is walking in, hands low, looking for a bingo punch now.
Spartacus edges that one for me, cause that flurry at the start had Oakey really worried.

Re: Tony Oakey v Steve Spartacus (British Light Heavy Title) RBR
Round 10:
Spartacus' jab is falling short, as Oakey stays out of reange, before coming in with some jabs then a hook. Spartacus looks to launch some swinging uppercuts, but misses out twice. Oakey still working hard, and each jab now pushing that Spartacus head back. LEft hook then a right swing lands for Oakey. Body shots from Oakey,, but you can see why there's only 5 KOs on the record. Oakey not rattling Spartacus too much. Oakey's jabs and hooks are getting through too often now, but Spartacus looks tirred but resilient. Overhand right from Oakey, then two good jabs. Good left hook from Oakey.
99-91

Re: Tony Oakey v Steve Spartacus (British Light Heavy Title) RBR
Round 11:
If Oakey doens't get KOd, then it would be the biggest travesty for Spartacus to win. Spartacus with a decent straight right. Uppercut then a hook from Spartacus, but Oakey is still jabbing and throwing straight rights back at him. Spartacus backs off. Two body shots from Oakey, and Spartacus is not standing and taking it any more. Spartacus with two hooks up top, but Oakey return with four shots before going to the body. Oakey lands three jabs then a hook as Spartacus finds the ropes at his back. Decent right hand, but Spartacus clinches now, he's gtaken everything. Oakey's jabs and hook lands again, but Spartacus grits his teeth, then lands a dig to the body. Spartacus digs in two body shots, but Oakey bangs out a right hook then a jab at the bell. Fantastic round of entertainment, if not technically brilliant.
109-100

Re: Tony Oakey v Steve Spartacus (British Light Heavy Title) RBR
Round 12:
The corner tells Oakey to stay out of range, and hey're probably right. Spartacus misses with a looping left. Spartacus trying hard, but Oakey is countering fantastically, Spartacus misses a right then a jab, hook, body shot, hook. Spartacus on the ropes, Oakey is banging shor shots in, 5, 6, and the ref steps in. Oakey adds TKO number 6 to his record. Spartacus hung his hands, but Spartacus looked absolutely distraught that it was stopped. Great finish from Oakey. He may have more to come yet.
Sorry Mick, round 12 KO for Oakey. Time 2.26 remaining in round 12.

CC for turning up pretty much wrecked bro....I imagine that is what it's like when I post pretty drunk.
Oakey says: "I am a good boxer when I put my mind to it. Fair play to sSteve he was a very tough, fit guy and he stayed there for much longer than I though he would. I'm delighted, and I am really elated."
Frank Maloney also confirmed that Oakey's next fight would be taking place in his home town of Portsmouth against Brian Magee, and Oakey deserves the plaudits he gets after that performance, cause he didn't stop for 12 rounds.

Re: Tony Oakey v Steve Spartacus (British Light Heavy Title) RBR
After some cunning modifying of the mistakes on my previous post, I can asusre you that my original result of 12 round KO for Oakey was correct ;)
First on the uundercard is Micky Steeds returning against John Anthony, after his defeat in his challenge for the british heavyweight title. Anthony is throwing some big shots in the second, with three wild hooks, then a big right puts Steeds on his arse. A possible challenge for the British cruiserweight title seems a long way away for Steeds after round two.

Re: Tony Oakey v Steve Spartacus (British Light Heavy Title) RBR
Good work as always Rhun, have a CC ;)

Re: Tony Oakey v Steve Spartacus (British Light Heavy Title) RBR
John Anthony is a fighter that doesn't seem to bother with a jab, but jut comes forward windmilling his arms with massive power shots. Steeds recovering with a better boxing game, avoiding the big shots, and throwing jabs and hooks to the body. Anthony swings a right so hard that his fist carries him all the way to the canvas, no knockdown, just too much momentum. When you consider that Steeds came from the illegal street fighting circuit, you don't expect Steeds to fight like the classy boxer of the pair, but he is.
Steeds is picking off his opponent, and looks much more a natural at cruiserweight. John Anthony rocked y a hard left to the body. Anthony looksa four-round fighter, as Steeds comes forward with much more work. His guard, though basic, is blocking everything that Anthony has to throw. Good right and left hooks from Steeds. Steeds having a hard return to the game after his defeat against Gammer, going into the last. Anthony comes out with a ums rush. Swinging wildly and not landing anything. Body shot and left DO land from Steeds. Anthony cowers on the ropes as Steeds comes forward. Anthony does look like a fighter into his fifth fight of the year, but whenever he comes forward, Steeds looks to have enough to get past Anthony. Steeds deserves the victory, after coming up off the floor.

Re: Tony Oakey v Steve Spartacus (British Light Heavy Title) RBR
Last fight of the evening screened was Peter Haymer v Paul David, and with Haymer coming off a 2 round defeat against Ovill McKenzie, he needed the victory to put his career back on track. Unfortunately for him, David looked a very good, but awkward fighter, and was deserving of the victory over the former English and Commonwealth champion Haymer. Haymer didn't manage to land often enough, and spent way too long trying to set it up, instead of actually throwing the punches.
For me, that's goodnight, and I'll hope to see you soon enough, I think my next one will be Skelton v Sprott next Saturday night. Remember to choon in ;)
