ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
Do you guy's think this is true. He said he was drugged right before the fight. His trainer gave him some water to drink, after the third round he was completely exhausted. What do you guy's think?

Re: ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
This came as a shocking surprise to me, after all these years you wait till mid 2007 to come and tell the public you were drugged, that ruins a little bit of his credibility, I thought you guy's would be more shocked by this outcome.

Re: ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
There was no way George Foreman was drugged, I am disappointed that something like this would even come out of his mouth. Ali beat him and that's it.

I am just a little puzzled on how he would want to start living in denial three decades later.

Re: ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
Even if in some crazy reality this were true..
To come out with this now.. With ali in the way he is, And after Big george has forged such a large legacy having continued with greatness after the ali fight..
It truely does ruin some of his credibilty..

Re: ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
foreman a alltime great and
he punch his self out
he barley even went past the 5rd and aliwas use to go that late
he wansnt drugged
-
Re: ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
Foreman just fought the wrong fight he just kept swinging and swinging and he missed whole lot and none of his punches were landing clean i was disappointed by Foremans performance to be honest but i don't believe he was drugged but them witch doctors and all other stuff that was happening out there wern't good for Foremans mentality but still he wasn't drugged just fought the wrong kind of fight.

Re: ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
Foreman couldn't have fought any other type of fight. I'm sure this is a misquote or something. Foreman is quite candid about the fact that he beat the hell out of Ali until his arms fell off, and that's when Ali struck.

Foreman could of looked for openings more and not been so sloppy just swinging and hitting nothing but arms and try and paced himself better alot of his punches when they landed wernt clean at all.

Re: ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
But the thing is, Ali was hurt. Foreman felt like he was on the bring of stopping the fight everytime out. Foreman was never a concise puncher anyways, even if they weren't connecting clean, those blows were among the hardest Ali ever took.

Ali is very smart he hides it well Foreman would of never knew Ali was hurt because he is very clever at faking it Foreman must of been discouraged but thing is i wish Foreman would of paced himself and fought bit more clever because he must of knew Ali is very tough and he isn't going to get him out of there in few rounds but im probably wrong because most people believed Ali would get seriously hurt so maybe Foreman did think it but still wish he wouldn't of just swung and hit nothing but arms.

During ali frazier 1, ali rubbed in it fraziers face that he couldn't hurt him. I think it was round 11 frazier hits ali with a massive shot and he starts stumbling around (but you can clearly tell he was doing it on purpoise) almost as if to say "Ok you think you hurt me, come prove it"

Re: ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
Foreman said in an interview that after the 6th round he overheard ali say, "i made it". So for ali to have said that, was an admission that he was taking a beating and foreman's punches were effective.

Re: ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
First, I'd like to wait until I see this confirmed or a reliable source is shown. George has been nothing but a class act and has, on NUMEROUS occaisions, talked about how Ali outsmarted him and beat him fair and square. So for this to come out now seems rediculous.
Personally, I don't really consider excuses. In my view, there are so many "what ifs" and "could haves" and excuses about any fight that no one can really be certain that are true. But one concrete thing that everyone can plainly see is the result. So really I'm not putting any stock into this.
IMHO George just simply "blew his load" too quick. Ali tricked him into throwing a lot of his energy away. Maybe the atmosphere, the stress and the delay of the fight got to him mentally. Who knows.

Re: ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
I read this on another site as well - apparently it's a quote from his new book.
-
Re: ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
I heard him in interviews say that he was abnormally tired during the fight, but i never heard him accuse anybody of drugging him.
-
Re: ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
This is the most idiotic thing I have ever heard & it besmirtches the greatness of a historical fight.
If George said this...he should be ashamed. There's no way to prove it & it makes him appear to be sorry ass sore loser in regards to this match.
Ree-gotdam-dickulous!

Re: ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
I bet this has been taken out of context, Rafeal always does that. Maybe he said he felt drugged or whatever, but this just doesn't sound like Foreman.
Although, I mean he was in Zaire where EVERYONE hated him, but that would be something that doesn't take 33 years to come out.

Yeah...I would think that too. Big George is generally very VERY respectful of Ali & boxing in general.

Re: ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
Here's the quote from his recent book:
That's what the ex-heavyweight champ suggests in his new memoir, "God in My Corner," revealing his trainer gave him a weird-tasting cup of water just before the bout. "I almost spit it out . . . Man, I know this water has medicine in it," Foreman said to his trainer, who denied it was spiked. "I climbed into the ring with that medicinal taste still lingering in my mouth . . . After the third round, I was as tired as if I had fought 15 rounds."

I'm not sure why George would say that now after all these years. Every interview I've ever seen of his, he has always claimed Ali just got the best of him.
He's trying to create some buzz for his new book. I can't think of any other explanation to the weird timing of this "drugged" claim.
That's just weird.
-
Re: ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
I'm still not sure what context that was in. He could have said that but then came back and said the things he's always said. Quotes like that sell the book you would think. I don't know, I hope to hear some more about this, I'll give George a slide on this one.

Good job and good research, I heard the claim on ESPN'S Pardon the Interuption, not many people believed me so I tried to find it on the net, I will give you a CC in about 60 post.

Totally agree.
I wanna see the part that was cut out of the quote at the . . . point: "taste still lingering in my mouth . . . After the third round,"
Sounds like the quote was edited conveniently for publicity.
I know that George knows inside that he lost fair and square. He's admitted it plenty of times.
He wasn't used to fighting past 2 rounds at that point. It's about as simple as that. And it wasn't the last time we saw George get gassed late into a fight.

Re: ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
My guess is a possible statute of limitations on what could be considered libel (or slander if it was spoken to a biographer). Chris Byrd is under legal obligation to not make reference to his accusation that he was drugged during the first W. Klitschko fight. It still does look bad on Foreman's part to enlighten us 30 years too late, but there could possibly a legal reason for this.

But Foreman would have just not spoke on why he lost the fight then. He's been as open as any boxer is as to about why and how they lost. It would be wierd if he did an about face on that.

Maybe he was drugged when he said this ;D :lickish:

Re: ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
Don't worry if he was drugged they would have only disqualified him anyway if he had won
Might even have got a ban

Nice screen name ::**
I think he just burned out after throwing bombs for 3 rounds.
Strange how it's taken him 30 odd years to pipe up and nothing was mentioned days after.

I remember Forman complained about the food, obviously insiuating that he was suffering form a slight bought of food poisoning but something in his water? Thats just petty.

Re: ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
He suffered a cut during sparring that put the fight back a little.
Surely they would have found something in his Urine post fight if he'd been drugged.
-
Re: ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
He's made this claim before, right after the fight, and recanted.
But in this particular instance,Id keep in mind, the root source of this story is the New York Post, not exactly a pillar of journalism
-
Re: ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
So the big question for George is why the fuck would his trainer want to drug him??

Maybe it was one of them drugs you can only detect 30 years later. ;)
-
Re: ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
Keeping in mind that the root source is the NY Post
He propbably put in to the book his original claim from immediatly after the fight, and they just took it completely out of its context

Not necessarily. Byrd is not allowed to speak ill of the W. Klitschko incident, but he can still talk about it. Talking about something in a good light will not generate a lawsuit. Talking ill about something that could damage a person's reputation can.

Re: ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
since foreman is the heavyweight champ--shouldnt he have chosen where the fight should take place..not ALI. different setting could have changed the fight so he should say he made a mistake about fighting in zaire
-
Re: ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
Well, somebody must have put something in big George's happy snacks because he has finally lost it!
If you watch that fight closely he was simply outsmarted by Ali and he looked focused and ready to go when he entered the ring, so who knows what big George is talking about.
Why say this 33 years later is the real mystery here.
Ali may have Parkinson's but big George might have Alzheimer's!!!!!
-
Re: ESPN reports " George Foreman claimed he was drugged before the Ali fight".
I think that Big George is about as straight and honest as a person can get. I believe that he believes that it happened. MAYBE it did..who is to say? One of the few people who would know/suspect something is George Foreman.
Foreman would definitely not lie about it if he thought it was true. Maybe his memory is mistake. But Ali WAS a member of the nation of Islam at the time and you know they didn't want to take a chance on him losing.
But I agree it seems in bad tastes for Foreman to say that, even if he believes it...there is NO point in saying it now. It can only detract from either man's legend.
