BOXING NEEDS A NEW STAR!!! Who is it gonna be.
I look at the current crop of fighters and i cant see any of them being HUGE stars like an Ali, Leonard or even DLH. I mean PBF is a great fighter but his style is boring to the general public, and he could be retired. Cotto doesnt seem to have any charisma, tho a good fighter. Taylor, the undefeated young undisputed middleweight champ should be a star but his fights are boring.
No heavyweights really excite the public. Manny Pac is great but maybe in too small a weight division to be a world wide star.
Who can take the next step and be Boxings GLAMOUR BOY and bring back the popularity to the sport?

Re: BOXING NEEDS A NEW STAR!!! Who is it gonna be.
it's a shame for a while there I thought it could have been Lacy
hey how about Paul Williams he has some star potential
edit: i want to say chad dawson but i dont know if there are enough big fights for him at lhw to become a big star, but we'll see.

Yeah dawson potential but not a lot of fights around for him. Maybe Kessler?
-
Re: BOXING NEEDS A NEW STAR!!! Who is it gonna be.
Lacy was definitely being groomed.
There are a bunch of young guys I see that could capture some attention but nobody really in the current scheme of things aside from the retiring Mayweather. There is a guy, Francisco Santana who is a TOTAL metrosexual California pretty boy who has already been sold here in parts of the Bay Area. I don't know if he has the skills or not though but the guy is a complete character. He wants to be Oscar De La Hoya.
-
Re: BOXING NEEDS A NEW STAR!!! Who is it gonna be.
Hate to bring it back to the Bay but America has already gone for Andre Ward once...
-
Re: BOXING NEEDS A NEW STAR!!! Who is it gonna be.
Hopefully Pavlik. He is great to watch and he has world class power and a solid chin.
-
Re: BOXING NEEDS A NEW STAR!!! Who is it gonna be.
Nobody as big as ODH, But I believe Cotto could have some star power down the line. Puerto Rico built up for Trinidad who ended up having some serious star power starting in the late 90's all the way till his retirement. I believe they will put the same energy into Cotto, as long as he takes care of Judah and then the winner of Williams and Margarito.

I like cotto i really do. I've got a bad feeling that he wont get thru those two fights tho. Hope he does.
We need one top guy, with an exciting style to just get out there and fight everyone. Un fortunately a lot of the guys who are best to watch get beaten by defensive guys like Winky PBF Hopkins..... Kessler could do it. Fight Calzaghe and win. And win a rematch. Then the winner of BHOP Winky, then beat Taylor, then Pavlik, then Miranda, then a match against Dawson.
Dream on!!!!

Re: BOXING NEEDS A NEW STAR!!! Who is it gonna be.
Berto, Pavlik, or Bautista.
-
Re: BOXING NEEDS A NEW STAR!!! Who is it gonna be.
Hopefully Kelly the Ghost Pavlik, got the skills, physicality and demeanor of a great champion. I wish this kid the very best of luck, I will be rooting for him!!!

It's amazing how his star has risen so quickly, he needs to capatalize on every oppourtunity that this big win has given him, including a big fight with Taylor, Kessler, or JC.

Re: BOXING NEEDS A NEW STAR!!! Who is it gonna be.
I think a guy like Wlad Klitchsko or Sam Peters could be a big star in boxing if they were advertised to the general public. Two big, strong guys who knock the majority of their opponents out with brutal power shots... thats what HW boxing is all about. The public would love those guys if they got to know them.

Good point. Maybe one of them needs to fight a Lennox Lewis or Holyfield that the public is aware of and ko them early. Cant see it happening. Maybe we need Wlad and Vitali to fight?
Dream on!!!!

Re: BOXING NEEDS A NEW STAR!!! Who is it gonna be.
unfortunatly there is no big stars at the moment. maybe floyd but hes gonna sit on the DLH win and retire :-\
and i dont think we will see any great HW for decades. by that time our generation will be telling our grand kids "TYSON, LEWIS ,HOLYFIELD, MAN THEY DONT MAKE EM LIKE THAT ANYMORE"
ITs a shite stae of affairs, and it f@#%ing SUX!!!
cause boxing has evolved. its not a gladiators game anymore

I think the most effective way is those short specials, like the 24/7 things they aired on Mayweather/De La Hoya. Show Wlad preparing for his match, let the general public see him fight. I know its easier said than done, but with the De La Hoya/Mayweather fight I realized something: its not all about wins and losses, the average joe needs to made familiar with a guy in order to care to see him fight. I mean those 24/7s and all the press got people who didn't know jack shit abotu boxing excited to see it, because they got to know a bit about each guy. Thats just my take on it anyway.

Yup, Honestly that's the only fight that I saw of Pavlik but It was like "I became a fan at first fight" :D
The kid seems like the complete package.

Re: BOXING NEEDS A NEW STAR!!! Who is it gonna be.
Not UBF ( Ugly Boy Floyd )
Not Margarito... ;D
Maybe little Oscar Gabriel????? :rocks:
-
Re: BOXING NEEDS A NEW STAR!!! Who is it gonna be.
Also, try to get a cable TV contract. HBO is owned by Time Warner, so why not get an hour long block of boxing, like UFC has with UFC Unleashed on one of the Time Warner stations? Like a UPN type channel, or TNT when basketball season is out. Something like that, but not a lot of people have HBO. If it was on network TV more, the PPV demands wouldn't be so outrageous.
The Contender was a start, and it showed boxing can survive on regular television (as if that needed to be proved), Tarver and Dawson fighting on ABC is even better, now let's get a syndicated program for boxing on the airwaves :thumb:
It's these type of things I hope Oscar can do because he is the only promoter I've heard mention it.

Re: BOXING NEEDS A NEW STAR!!! Who is it gonna be.
If I had to name three fighters that could be huge stars I would name...
1.
I'll get back to you...

Re: BOXING NEEDS A NEW STAR!!! Who is it gonna be.
I am ready to accept Floyd mayweather as a superstar fighter on the same level as ODLH, Hopkins, he can be one of the brightest stars if he just changed his persona a bit. He is likeable if you get past the brash exterior. You can see he just wants to be appreciated. He isnt a bad guy as many people think. He has flaws just like every one of us if he was a tad bit more humble he would be considered all time great.

I could care less if he is a jerk...I just want him to quit saying shit like " I'm the best " " I've fought the best "...just back it up. He should fight guys that will challenge him. Isn't that how you become great in boxing? His toughest fight has been with DLH and in my opinion Oscar won that. Win or lose though, that's not the point...the point is he needs more of these type of fights.

His last fight he fought in Southern California I didn't see (First fight of his I haven't seen but I know a guy who should have a copy of it) but against Julio Jean he looked very good.
He finally showed a real meanstreak, Julio Jean intentionally headbutted him drawing blood under the eye. Ward said something to him, threw some soft jabs, waited for Jean to punch off the ropes and then hit him with a killer right hand. Jean got hurt and Ward threw like 10 right hands in a row before finally taking him out.
He also went southpaw a bit, and the straight left hand worked a little but his balance southpaw looks like it did when he was just turning pro. I'm sure he'll improve on that though. He looks GOOD.

Sounds heads and shoulders above how he used to look. I want to see these fights get TV exposure!! What happened to him fighting on the best damn fight nights ???

Re: BOXING NEEDS A NEW STAR!!! Who is it gonna be.
He stopped that. It was to much pressure early on in his career, he doesn't let on to that but everyone else around them do. Talked quite a bit about that very fact to him, Virgil Hunter his trainer, the Goosens and everyone agreed that the temporary break from TV and subsequent thumb injury was a blessing in discuse for Andre. The thumb injury kept him out of the ring for 7 months but never kept him out of the gym.
He's improved ten fold since, especially with his balance. I haven't seen him fall in with his right foot in 4 fights, something he did 10 times a round when he was starting out.
It was just a publicity issue. He had a lot of scheduling issues with Team Jordan and HBO, and it was tying him up. He's got that under control now and is making it back on TV on the Williams - Margarito undercard.
Plus, the fights in San Jose were on Thursdays which isn't really a prime slot for boxing. But the Goosens, say what you want about them, they are bringing him up right. They don't have any timetables right now and that's a good thing.

Re: BOXING NEEDS A NEW STAR!!! Who is it gonna be.
I think Cotto has a chance to shine, Andre Berto is a future prospect and I'd say that as he's studying for a law degree and is a unified champ at a very early age....we should be getting behind Juan Diaz because that bwoy is gunna be a star.
Plus because I said he's gunna be a star, it'll more than likely happen because I said it and I'm a legend. ;D

Re: BOXING NEEDS A NEW STAR!!! Who is it gonna be.
Maybe slightly too early after only the one bout at heavyweight but as far as that division goes Im pinning my hopes my David Haye to emerge as the big super star. Who knows though, there was a time when I had big hopes for Audley.

It won't happen man. Haye said he only wants WBC titles and has no interest in defending. He said if he wins WBC cruiser, he moves up without defending...and if he wins WBC Heavy, he'll retire without defending...a very happy man. Hard to build a star when he's not interested in defending.

Where'd you hear this? I know he wont stay at Cruiser but I would of thought he'd be at Heavy for a while. Besides almost every boxer says hes gonna retire after this or that but how many actually do? Once he sees the money he'll be offered for some of those heavyweight fights I think he'd change his mond.

I was reading through this and was quite shocked that no one has said David Haye yet! This guy has the potential to be a massive star. When he wins WBC Cruiser he will step up to his natural weight and you've already seen what his power can do against a world ranked opponent. I know a lot of you may say that Bonin was a bum, but even so he was ranked 10, had a good record and was TKO1.
Of course this guy will defend the titles if he won! There is so much money to be made and one a couple of the HWs have had a pop his Abercrombie & Fitch modelling days may well be behind him. This guy has the power, personality and marketability to be a star! His 1 question may be his chin...but that Fragomeni fight was brutal and he took some shots! He's my horse anyway! ;D

Interview with him in a copy of boxing news. I still have the magazine back home. In work at the mo..lol
He basically explained it when asked if he was disappointed when the Enzo fight never happened. He said he wasn't because he knew he'd have beat him, but if he'd won the WBO title, he'd have vacated it because he doesn't view it as a legit title. He said it was all about the green belts and only wanted WBC. He said once he wins the WBC Heavy, he'll retire because he feels he will have achieved what he wants, earned some decent money and wants to get out of the game before he's 30 with health in tact. He also said he's only interested in fighting guys ranked above him, because there is no point fighting someone ranked below him because they can't get him to the top.
To be honest, I don't think he has the passion for the sport. I think he just knows he's damn good at it. Tis a shame because he's one of Britains best. Reminds me of Lennox Lewis in alot of ways.

:coolclick: #75 for vouching for me there. Wasn't sure people would believe me without an internet source. There should be something floating around the net though I'd have thought.

Re: BOXING NEEDS A NEW STAR!!! Who is it gonna be.
I dont think he'd retire without defending, purely because the entire sport of boxing would consider him a cop-out. He has so much potential, if he won a world title he could really dominate, to turn that down so you can live a pretty boy would make him very very unpopular. He'd get trashed all over the place.

His fan base isn't that big. I don't really think Haye cares about being popular. I was only posting what he said in an interview though, unsure if he'll go back on his word. He seemed pretty certain though. To be honest I can understand where he's coming from. If you're only in it to prove success to yourself, then fair enough. At least he has clear goals.

Re: BOXING NEEDS A NEW STAR!!! Who is it gonna be.
the next new star is boxing is Peter KID CHOCOLATE Quillin. Middleweight from NYC. 12-0 11 KO's. a pure puncher with SPEED and POWER. lethal combination. also does charity work for after school programs. he is the entire package.
-
Re: BOXING NEEDS A NEW STAR!!! Who is it gonna be.
Not the next star, but a star of the next era will be Britain's Anthony Small. When I saw him on a Hatton undercard, I immediately thought he'd have a big future in the sport. World champ one day I think.
