Why Do People Think Tyson Is Unbeatable ??
I was reading some old topic and utter nonsense i was reading im sorry Cockey Cockney i like you man your one of my favorite posters but what you typed here was totally wrong.
Tyson v Shavers- Tyson KO.
Tyson v Lyle- Tyson KO.
Tyson v Foreman- Tyson UD.
Tyson v Frazier- Tyson UD.
Tyson v Ali- Tyson KO.
Tyson v Norton- Tyson KO.
So IMO he would beat them all, in his prime he was amazing.
Tyson imo is one of the most overrated boxers of all time the man didn't beat anyone really well if you think beating old shot Holmes or beating the natural Lightheavyweight who only got title getting gifts of a faded Holmes makes him unbeatable your all dreaming Tyson had good skills but when i hear this utter nonsense that Tyson had amazing defense he never got it blah blah is totally wrong the man had talent i never denied it but for people to think he is unbeatable all this other nonsense Cockey Cockney i am not having a go at you mate i was just quoting a post which i totally disagree with and i want people to tell me why they say this because when i watch him i see hw with good talent but nothing unbeatable or this aura of invincibility they think he has am i missing something or what because im just not seeing it folks i want your thoughts.

It was the first time he fought somebody who could take a serious punch, who had reach
Tyson's whole career up to them had been carefully massaged.Theres a reason he didnt fight Witherspoon

That was a bloated, depressed, and lazy Iron Mike not what I'd call primed and ready.
He wasn't unbeatable but he sure as hell was a conqueror. The bell rings and here he comes. Take one step backwards and he runs up your chest and down your back. You're flattened and seeing stars before you get your feet set.

Damn right. Mike Tyson is the KO artist of all-time!

Re: Why Do People Think Tyson Is Unbeatable ??
I think Tyson had all the physical tools to be "unbeatable" or beat these guys but never did he have the mindset for it.

Actually, what he lacked the most, was reach
And he never, ever learned how to make up for it,once his footspeed started to lag

I think he would beat those guys. Opponents aside you can't deny the young Tyson's skill.

Mike Tyson would be beaten soundly by the following fighters in their primes:
Muhammed Ali - too fast, too good of a chin, too tough physically and more importantly mentally!
George Foreman - too tough, too big, too strong....Tyson had DECENT defense but most of the time people were too afraid to throw for fear of being hit (which was never the case with George) which made Tyson's defense look even better.
Joe Frazier - Joe's up and down bobbing would have given Tyson tons of trouble landing hooks to the head but uppercuts would be a different story but that reminds me of what punch Ali was throwing when he got knocked on his ass! Joe would never STAY DOWN either
Evander Holyfield - always had the style and size to beat Tyson, his work rate was unparralelled in the division in his prime
Riddick Bowe - PERFECT style of finesse and power to destroy Tyson and he had a HELL of a chin
Lennox Lewis - Lennox in his prime was a SAFE fighter, he didn't give the other guy any oppertunities to do damage, and his 1-2 plus his uppercut and the way he clinched after he landed would really frustrate Tyson
Joe Louis - He was too damn good to get caught by Tyson and he was bigger and I think he punched harder than Tyson. Tyson never fucked anyone up the way Louis fucked up Schmelling.
I do think the following would have a good chance at Tyson:
Sonny Liston - he was tough and had a good jab but more importantly a fearsome figure with good power
Jack Dempsey - Tyson style in origination a little small but 218-220 is not a far cry from Dempsey's 195
Rocky Marciano - he was small but he kept punching, he had enormous power, he was a smothering style of fighter and had a good quick combination in the left hook + right uppercut. Also the heart of Rocky is unmatched!
Good/Greats Tyson could beat:
Ken Norton - Why? Look at his record vs Power Punchers....not too good bro!
Gerry Cooney - He was big and easy to hit which was never good
Earnie Shavers - He could punch but had no defense and usually punched himself out...Jerry Quarry beat his ass!
Larry Holmes - good boxer, decent power, but he's no Ali....Larry made mistakes, Larry got caught a number of times...but he never fought someone who would make him pay for those mistakes which is why he did so well.
Bob Foster - GREAT light heavyweight, never did very well at heavyweight
James Toney - he lost that FIGHTIN FEELIN....he stopped throwing as many punches at heavyweight and relied on his defense and his punches didn't have the pop on them that they once had but it would be close because Tyson throws exactly the way Toney likes to block...hooks and uppercuts....but Tyson had a GREAT overhand right
Take from this what you will but it's just my opinion

Re: Why Do People Think Tyson Is Unbeatable ??
I disagree about Holmes at his best he had excellent jab better jab than Ali great chin and great boxing skills great stamina i agree with mostly what your saying but i will name boxers i disagree with who you have Tyson losing to.
Joe Louis
Jack Dempsey
Rocky Marciano
You honestly think Dempsey the guy with no defence and Marciano who cut easily would have better chance at beating Tyson than Holmes would Holmes has tools to beat Tyson Rocky and Dempsey have totally wrong style to beat him there brawlers who are easy to hit total disaster against Tyson.
-
Re: Why Do People Think Tyson Is Unbeatable ??
Holmes got HURT vs fighters he wasn't supposed to get hurt by none of those guys did that very often.
I don't consider Holmes near as good of a fighter as Ali....the jab was ok, his power, Eh....I mean who had an iron chin that he beat??? Tex Cobb??? There's no danger in Tex Cobb other than he'll take your power.
Louis beat A TON of fighters....25 title defenses vs anyone and everyone, Tyson's division was almost as weak and he couldn't even come close to that!
Marciano's style was awkward and despite of his lackluster technical skills he could land what he wanted to when he wanted to do it
Also just a clarification I said they would have a good chance vs Tyson....those guys were GREATS they'd have a good chance vs pretty much anyone

Yes Holmes made mistakes everyone does but he was fantastic boxer in his prime Ali had better speed and footwork than Holmes but stamina chin and power is about the same imo but i believe Holmes would have better chance than Rocky and Dempsey and even Louis because Louis was to flatfooted Rocky and Dempsey were to easy to hit and are also flatfooted i just don't see them beating Tyson in all honesty Lyle.
Its just a shame Holmes didn't have Ali's competition would of been great to have seen him in early 70s against the greats.

Re: Why Do People Think Tyson Is Unbeatable ??
anybody can win at any time, any fight.

Re: Why Do People Think Tyson Is Unbeatable ??

Re: Why Do People Think Tyson Is Unbeatable ??
Lennox Lewis was flatfooted didn't bother him.
Ali never got dropped by the likes of Renaldo Snipes! When Ali got dropped he got dropped by the likes of JOE FRAZIER who's left hook would have killed most fighters.
Holmes is by all means underrated all-time but I think he was a lot more flawed than Ali and I think Frazier and Foreman would have ate him from lunch

Ali did get knocked down by Cooper and Jones though :) sorry i might be mistaken im not sure if Jones decked him but you say Holmes got decked by Snipes but that was only flash kd Holmes got up and gave him butt whooping where as Ali struggled with sd over Jones and was almost koed by Cooper.

Holmes was knocked down by Kevin Isaac....what's your point?

Lol come on Lyle that was his 7th pro fight i have never seen the fight but its totally different to a almost prime Ali getting decked by Cooper and only just winning sd over Doug Jones to a Holmes who only had 6 pro fights at that time.
-
Re: Why Do People Think Tyson Is Unbeatable ??
...Holmes only won an SD over Ken Norton, if Larry had better power than Ali then he should have KO'd Kenny or at least knocked him down
I respect Holmes as a great fighter but I personally was never impressed with his skill....he won a lot but I was never impressed and I thought had he been in the "Ali Era" he'd have had his ass handed to him on a regular basis
-
Re: Why Do People Think Tyson Is Unbeatable ??
Same could be said for Ali who lost twice to Norton imo i think Holmes had alot of skill but nvm i can't change your mind cc for the debate anyways i always enjoy a debate with you because we don't result to name calling just a good old fashioned boxing debate and thats what i like wish more members were like you in the debating department.

Re: Why Do People Think Tyson Is Unbeatable ??
True that brother, cc back

Re: Why Do People Think Tyson Is Unbeatable ??
Anyone who thinks prime Tyson was unbeatable or the greatest heavyweight ever obviously never watched prime Ali.
Mike Tyson does not even deserve to mentioned in the same sentence as Muhammad Ali.
-
Re: Why Do People Think Tyson Is Unbeatable ??
I'd pick prime Tyson over Shavers, Lyle, Norton and I'd give him a decent shot against Frazier (not saying he was a better fighter than Frazier, but his speed/power would probably be a tough pill for Frazier to swallor).
I don't believe there is much of a middle ground with prime Tyson. It seems that either guys are grossly overrating him or grossly underrating him.
He was a magnificent puncher and had the physical tools to beat anyone on any given night, but not by any means unbeatable. Buster Douglas proved that, and even if you believe Tyson was underprepared for that bout (which he probably was), journeyman James Tillis gave him an incredibly tough fight which I felt was VERY close, which he was in his prime

Mike Tyson captured the imagination of the boxing fan at a time when it was greatly needed, Tyson put asses in seats and was one of the most exciting fighters in history, nobody can take that away from him.

OK..... but that doesn't make him unbeatable, and that's what the title of the thread is about.

nobody is unbeatable.. not even Ali as you would have it. .. to stay unbeatable you need one hell of a match maker on your side , lots of smoke and plenty of mirrors.

well ive seen all ali's fights and all of tysons(got them on dvd) and while im a huge fan of ali and i rate him as the greatest fighter of all time cause of his achievments and he over came the odds against superior, stronger men eg; liston and foreman, and while tyson didnt acomplish nearly as much as ali(which i have lots of genuine excuses for, but couldnt be bothered going into, every fan that has followed tysons carrer knows what im talking about) id still pick tyson by KO over ali. you have to realize that alis defence was that he would move straight back and tyson would catch up with him. if ali was rocked badly by coopers left hook just imagine what tysons would feel like!

Ice i like you alot but Tyson stopped Holmes in 4 rounds he was down 3 times in that round the 3rd out cold now an arguement can be made that holmes was old but Holmes went on to do alot after Tyson so he was'nt that faded he went full 12 with Holyfield beat unbeaten Ray Mercer UD10 went full 12 with WBC champ McCall and quite a few thought he had won so Tyson stopping him in 4 was a really good result as for Spinks yes he was a former Lightheavy but he had beaten Holmes twice then beat 2 more heavys by stoppage Tagstad and Cooney both reasonable Cooney was 17stone and only lasted 5 rounds with Spinks. Tyson stopped him 1 this was a great result for Tyson as many considered Spinks as the linear champ so i don't think Tyson was overrated he just had to many problems the D'mato loss the Jacobs loss then Cayton and King fighting over him Givens srewing with his head and so on so he faded pretty fast i like to believe had D'mato and Jacobs not died he would have probably retired undefeated passing Marciano's record with millions in the bank Tyson was weak mentally he was to young he needed looking after but instead he was taken advantage of by King and others.

Re: Why Do People Think Tyson Is Unbeatable ??
Tyson v Shavers- Tyson KO.--Good fight while it lasted...IMO Tyson had to high a work rate to allow Shavers his time to get his shots off--Though all Earnie needed was one good shot against ANYONE!!
Tyson v Lyle- Tyson KO.--Again IMO Tyson too much too fast
Tyson v Foreman- Tyson UD.---Big George had all Tysons power and then some!!!---IMO it depends on who gets gassed first...I go 50/50 onthis one
Tyson v Frazier- Tyson UD.--I go with Mike on this one Frazier had a problem with big punchers and was not exactly a defensive fighter
Tyson v Ali- Tyson KO.---This is just stupid!!!---Ali at any time up until 1976 beats Mike with out any question---Tyson may drop Ali once or twice by KO him NO!!!...more then likely Tyson gets frustrated by Ali and his Ring Savvy and speed...easy UD or possibly TKO for the Greatest
Tyson v Norton- Tyson KO.--Tyson KO...Ken had a soft chin

Man did I take a beating.....Gave my father $100 to bet on Buster on that fight...to win by KO....got 100-1 odds........he gave me the $100 back in the 9th when Tyson knocked down Douglas....you know the rest.....I beat that heavy bag till it fell out of the ceiling......

Had Tyson fought a Prime Holmes the result would'nt have been much different it would have still been a ko win for Tyson

This is my list
Tyson v Shavers- Tyson KO.
Tyson v Lyle- Tyson KO.
Tyson v Foreman- Foreman KO.
Tyson v Frazier- Tyson KO.
Tyson v Ali- Ali Decision.
Tyson v Norton- Tyson KO. The Tyson which would beat these guys is the 1988 Tyson who fought Holmes. And a prime Holmes vs. Tyson I pick Holmes by decision

Re: Why Do People Think Tyson Is Unbeatable ??
I would go for Tyson to stop Ali aswell if Cooper,Wepner and Frazier can knock him over Tyson can keep him their he is a better finisher than both these guys
