Hatton v Tszyu: Not as impressive as it sounds.

I think too many Hatton fans act as tho Ricky's win over KT was one of the all time great wins, but take a look into it further and it looks a whole lot less impressive.
Ricky was fighting a 36 year old Kostya who was probably in his prime aroun 1999.
Kostya fought Ricky in his own backyard.
Kostya fought against Ricky with a british ref who undoubtedly officiated in favor of hatton.
Kostya had fought 3 times in 4 years before that.

Now ask these questions.
Would Ricky have beaten 1999 in Sydney with an all aussie crowd with an aussie ref who bent the rules in kostyas favor?

The answer is no.

Now Rickys next big fight is against another aging warrior in Castillo.
This will be a more impressive win if he does it, yet still he has not fought a top champion in their prime...
Will Ricky's fans claim a victory against Castillo as another all time great win? Its not.

Last question, when Ricky is 36, had maybe a dozen defenses of his title, has not fought regularly, and is way past his prime, will he go to Australia, with an Australian ref and fight an up and coming aussie champ in their prime.

It's all a bit irrelevant now, I agree that Hatton would not have beaten the Tszyu of 1999-2001 but the fact remains Kostya got old and lost in 2005. He won't be the last great fighter this will happen to. Boxing has a huge list of guys who lost to fighters they would have easily beaten in their prime, Duran, Chavez, Hearns, Jones jr and perhaps even DLH has gone to long.
Good luck to Hatton i say, he won and should now get the rewards, Kostya was great and he won't be forgotton but you can't fight on forever. I wish he was 10years younger and he could take on Floyd!! At least he didn't lose to a bum!

Ok, obviously this will upset a lot of Hatton fans, but it's not like eagle is hating..he brings up legitimate points. Not that anything can change but that's what forum's are for, debate right?

To add to eagle's points...

KT was also battling a chronic shoulder injury AND when he was considering a comeback not long ago he mentioned that he felt he lacked some of his previous fire before he fought Hatton.

I always feel that Hatton was at his absolute best that night..maybe at an apex he will never reach again. And he needed to be at his best against a Tszyu that obviously didn't have all the pieces fitting perfectly in place. Still, most fighters never have everything "perfect" when they fight.


That was a great fight, let's not forget how close it was! I think KT would've pummeled hatton out in Austrailia or the US..I remember that cheer Hatton got when he bashed KT in the balls..the brits went crazy...they loved it! How often do you hear such applause for an illegal blow?

The Only thing I hated about that fight was the ref letting Hatton Practice "The Quiet Man" style you know like John Ruiz

You see everything you have said there shows me that you haven't seen a great deal of Ricky hatton fights. Hatton was not awesome on that night. He was effective and disciplined with the game plan he and billy graham set. I have seen him box ten times better than that. It was Kostya's mentality that let him down and that has nothing to do with age. He let hatton turn it into a macho contest and that took Kostya away from his game. Simple as.

I have to agree with you there... Castillo was the best possible option for a fight but im not sold on Castillo as a 140'er.
I dunno, i just have this feeling that Ricky is gonna have things his way all night. Not worries like.

A win wouldn't do that much for him IMO but it would just be nice to see Ricky do his thing aginst a like-minded fighter... And an extremely capable one at that.

To be honest I doubt Ricky will get that far (to 36) anyway.
Its very rare for swarming pressure fighters to sustain a long successfull carrer. These days its a well known and accepted fact too.

Corrales had him out on his feet in one fight, but all the rest were ref stoppages (cuts, etc.)

i agree with this point about hatton. all the mentions of the favoritism towards hatton were true ! personally i think it is outragous that he got away with such a blatant low blow.... he may have well just kicked him in the nuts it was so bad and hard. and i think that KT has probably retired because of that shot, and has probably suffered damages, no MAN, no pro athlete should be rewarded for that type of nonsense! KT couldnt even finish the fight and who in a million years would have guessed that KT would have retired during the fight?!?!?!

this is something of a trend in boxing now, i hate it . u cant simply fight journey men and claim to be the best!! its a similar point to PBF's fight with DLH. we all use boxrec here , go looka t PBF's career and tell me u think hes fought the best in the divisions to prove a shot against oscar. NOPE, ....i dont care if floyd retires cuz i think it will be a blessing for fight fans enuf of this over rated self hyping self proclaiming legend in there lifetime status its all bull shizle !!

if u want to be great, fight great, fight great fighters, and prove dominance in your divisions, fighters are always trying to rise to new levels to challenge the best. prove that it isnt a fluke or whatever. that u are the best and one more, two more macthes wont make the diff. think about lamotta robinson, ali frazier, gatti ward, pryior arguello. u cant be afraid to lose your title, this is the stuff legends are made of and how the will be recognized and remembered in history. think about this for a minute, toney hopkins and rjj all within a few pounds of each other and what did we see, 1 fight. no rjj feels he needs to prove sometihng against tarver and boom hes not the best huh all that running wont win u fights and certainly wont win you legend status. i mean roy is one of the greatest, but fight for sh!ts sake against the best competitiors. all 3 of them should have fought each other at least twice. where have all the good fights gone?

so bak to hatton cuz i dont want yall call me a hater of fatton. i was on the wagon up to the KT match. but after the wrestling and low blow i lost all respect for fatton, and hes not gained a bit more with his recent fights, ill never support him after that shot to be honest it was a disgrace and he should have been made an example of. fined, suspended or a point or 2 taken in that fight! jesus man they might as well been fighting in the street like Rocky 5.

ummm, and another point who the heck has ricky really fought? !! hes fought one fight a yr since KT and proved nothing except hes afraid of fighting real contenders. oooh im 42 - 0 and a legend but havnt fought anyone of real consequence. and the only one that was i cheated! dont tell me ben takie is a meaningful mark either.

like who do i think he should be facing or should have been ??? D Hopkins, Lazcano, Zab, Cotto , Margarito, .... PBF , one fight a yr isnt going to cut it. u get older and your drive and motivation go down... so ... no wonder hes sitting back at 140, theres no one to fight!!!

A Hatton lover would say that. Imagine if th result was reversed.... You'd be in my position and i'd be in yours.

Actually I don't think so. I do love Hatton. But I loved KT too. It was a hard fight for me.
