Calzaghe maps out rest of career (3 big superfights and a spoonful of bulls**t!)
CALZAGHE MAPS OUT REST OF CAREER
Wednesday 23rd May 2007
http://www.skysports.com/skysports/a...267057,00.html
Undefeated WBO and IBF champion Joe Calzaghe has expressed his desire to fight either Bernard Hopkins or Ronald "Winky" Wright.
Hopkins and Wright are scheduled to do battle on July 21, and Calzaghe has revealed he would relish the prospect of meeting the winner in January - however, he suggests The Executioner would be the more likely opponent.
He claimed: "Hopkins would interest me. He won his last fight against Antonio Tarver so he is still a formidable opponent.
"He looked good against Tarver but he is 42 years old and he can't go on forever. The winner of Winky Wright and Hopkins could be my opponent for January. They are fighting in July and I think they will put on a good show, but Hopkins will be too big for Wright."
Before his career ends, Calzaghe - who has had 42 professional fights and won all of them - claims he wants a series of what he has branded as "super fights", and WBC and WBO middleweight champion Jermain Taylor is his main priority.
He said: "Roy Jones doesn't interest me because he has been knocked out too many times. I would like three more fights, all of them against big names.
"Two years ago I said I would have three more fights and now, three fights later, I want three more. Whatever happens, I want to go out at the top, that is for sure."
A unification fight with Michael Kessler is a possibility for Calzaghe, and although promoter Frank Warren is currently attempting to tie up a meeting with the WBA and WBC champion, the 35-year-old insists Taylor is the target.
He said: "Kessler is a good fighter. Frank has been talking to his promoter over the last few days, trying to do something with him but I think that fight may be six months or more down the road. Kessler is not a big name in America.
"He has had a couple of good wins but in his last fight he beat Markus Bayer, who was shot. We can go down the Kessler road but Taylor is the one for me."
I don't think anyone else has posted this article. I would first like to say that I actually like JC as a fighter...but all this ongoing talk about 'super' fights is pissing me off. I'm beginning to think he's dodging Kessler. He seems more keen to fight Froch than Kessler. Joe isn't as big a name as he thinks he is. He's marginally better known than Kessler, but I think Kessler comands much more respect. I'm getting tired of the bullshit, the hype and everything else. He says he's not interested in fighting Roy Jones either, but he'd still be beating a man who was once best P4P fighter if he were to win. The Taylor fight is just a pipe dream, and I'm sorry Joe, but the more you pursue this, the more the likelyhood of you fighting another bum in September. Don't let us down, go get a fucking name...and for fucks sake stop hyping things that aren't going to happen.

Calzaghe needs to stop talking and start fighting he needs Warren to do his job and make the fights Kessler is the fight we want rather than him chasing the old guys

It's the fight we want, but it's not the fight Joe wants, and it suggests to me that he thinks he'd lose, which is why he won't take the fight now.

Re: Calzaghe maps out rest of career (3 big superfights and a spoonful of bullshit!)
its going to be sad when Calzaghe retires and realizes that the only people that think he was great are Brits, and his female groupies.
If only this guy had come to America in 1999 and follow the path of Lennox Lewis, he would have already probably faced Hopkins, Johnson, Jones etc and he would have been ready to retire with an unequal legacy. But now he is stuck with Lacy as his major victory, and a lot of what ifs?

Re: Calzaghe maps out rest of career (3 big superfights and a spoonful of bullshit!)
I think the only people who will think he was great are him and his dad

I'm not surprised that when there were a lot of threads on here about speculation regarding the possibility of a fight against Kessler a lot of people were saying he should be going after a fight with Taylor...and now it looks like the Taylor fight might be possible, people are saying he should be fighting Kessler.
Maybe a royal-rumble might be in order, or a 3-way KO slugfest?
Seriously though, you can't please everyone but it has to be one or the other. A Sakio Bika rematch, for example, or his mandatory with Dennis Inkin, would not cut the mustard for his fans, and even more for the critics.

I can assure you that when he beat Jeff Lacy I was 50% pleased and 50% drunk. By the time I got to bed in my hotel at 5am however, I was 50% plunk and 50% dreased.

Re: Calzaghe maps out rest of career (3 big superfights and a spoonful of bullshit!)
Calzaghe's big three should be 1) Kessler 2) Hopkins or Winky 3) I wouldnt mind a fight at lightheavy against the winner or Woods: Johnson 4 which may very well happen down the line

Read what I said Ono. I said people will call him a true pussy if he doesn't take the big fight. Read before criticising.

Re: Calzaghe maps out rest of career (3 big superfights and a spoonful of bulls**t!)
its got to be said that if Calzaghe fights Kessler, Winky/Hopkins, Taylor and Woods/Johnson there is a great possibility that he'll beat all of them imo. If he does this nobody could argue with him going down with the legacy he should of cemented. He is truly on of the most tallented boxers of his generation..
He's gota make these fights happen!!!!!!!!
-
Re: Calzaghe maps out rest of career (3 big superfights and a spoonful of bulls**t!)
Just fight Kessler
Put up,or shut up
Beat him,Ill sing his praises too
But until he does, hes a paper tiger
How hard is this to do,Kesslers people want the fight, all it would take is Warren to stop making absolutely assinine "offers" to get it done

yeah its easy to defend your self in your own back yard. When is he ever going to vegas of atlantic city. I remember going over to kids houses growing up to put knots on their head.I think the top 3 middle weightsa can beat him. Wright , Taylor and Pavlik.

Re: Calzaghe maps out rest of career (3 big superfights and a spoonful of bulls**t!)
haha JC beats down on them 3 middleweights, too silky with too much class.
Could possibly stop all 3

Sh******************t man...you count Pavlik in the top 3 middleweights? Personally, I think that Pavlik showed oodles of courage and balls-out fighting style in beating Miranda, and I have to say that I would still rate Arthur Abraham, and maybe Roman Karmazin above him among the middleweights. Amin Asikainen would also have a good shot at beating him IMO.
Anyhow....I say wait and see what Frank Warren turns up and throws on the table for Calzaghe next. If it's Kessler, Taylor (maybe the winner of Wright/Hopkins) then I think we can be pretty happy....anyone else and I'll be disappointed.
One thing that does annoy me a little, however, is people are always jumping on Joe Calzaghe's back for not being able to fight the huge names in the divisions around him, yet we never see 5 or 6 threads on the go when Wlad Klitschko fights Ray Austin or when Winky Wright fought Ike Quartey in other blatant mismatches....

I hate it when people say things like this. JC is claiming to be a great fighter. Therefore, the proper comparison is not between JC and posters on this website who have jobs other than professional boxer; the proper comparison is with other great fighters. Compared with those fighters, JC has "defended his belt 20 times" against very little talent during a span in which truly great fighters defended their titles against challenging opposition. People shouldn't be precluded from bringing this up just because they haven't themselves defended a belt 20 times.

Arthur Abraham does now logically rank below Pavlik I think... Since his fight with Miranda was very close and he suffered serious damage and hasn't fought since when PAvlik just destroyed him.. Karmazin has never fought at middleweight....Also Wright vs Quartey really wasn't a mismatch at all, and realistically Quartey is a better p4p fighter than anyone Calzaghe has ever faced.. But to each his own.

Sorry bro, but fighting someone who has stepped up two weights....and then not finishing him off because they were friends....Wright v Quartey was a non event. And he would be a better p4p fighter because it makes it very difficult to get into the p4p rankings when you get up to the heavier weights. And I reckon i will always be harder to beat a fighter for the first time than it is to be the second man to beat him. But as you mentioned....each to his own.

Re: Calzaghe maps out rest of career (3 big superfights and a spoonful of bulls**t!)
personally i think calzaghe is satisfied with his win over jeff lacy..and the fights against these "big names" are just talk, because winky, bhop, aren't going overseas and jc isn't fighting in the states...so he'll fight kessler eventually and after he embarasses the overrated kessler like he did lacy..he'll just keep going and going until he's too old having never really beaten anyone worth talking about....except the old eubank...and he really doesn't matter unless you're a brit...

Hmmm....he's been no 1 in the division since Sven Ottke retired way back when....so being in the p4p rankings means nothing....personally I don't think too much of Winky Wright's recent performances....but I wouldn't say that he doesn't matter....

if calzaghe were to beat winky that would be his biggest win by far...winky went up and was given a draw with taylor, even though IMO he beat him....wink beat the great tito, he beat shane twice, those three victories alone are bigger than anything JC has ever done...esp if you compare both their recent fights..wink has been far more impressive than calzaghe....
i mean c'mon MAnfredo jr. :lolhaha:

Re: Calzaghe maps out rest of career (3 big superfights and a spoonful of bulls*
JC needs to stop talking and start making fights. I've been hearing he wants these big fights since last year, well get Warrne to make them then! And if he does fight B Hop/Winky,Taylor/Kessler, and wins well, everyone here needs to respect his skills. You can diss his resume all night long but he beats all the aforementioned imo especially Winky and B Hop. JC has alot of skill in the ring.(and I'm not even a big fan)
-
Re: Calzaghe maps out rest of career (3 big superfights and a spoonful of bulls**t!)
I have grown tired :cwm33: of Warren and Calzaghe's claims of what they supposedly want...
NO ONE IS MAKING IT DIFFICULT FOR THESE FIGHTS TO HAPPEN EXCEPT WARREN AND CALZAGHE!!!!!
Thats why when the Calzaghe/Manfredo fight was over and Joe had his 2 min with Merchant and tried to pass things off to Warren Larry just turned his back on him and acted like Frank did not exist....
Joe has no intentions on fighting in the USA or any where else but Europe...The closer to Wales the better
They claim Kessler turned down the fight they offered but If they offered him the terms of fighting at joe's home court I can't blame him or his team...We all know how that fight would end.....
The ref would wave it off during introductions and after the fight claim he was saving Kessler from the future of punishment.....And Warren would open up a new Hall of Fame just for Calzaghe....
I have lost all respect for tha management team of Calzaghe and Calzaghe himself.....
You cant use the "What ever my promoter decides" BULLS### line for ever.....

That's what I've been saying all along, but it galls me that there are all these people dissing his resume simply because there have been no decent American supermiddleweights in recent years, and the only one got his arse kicked (Lacy). And quit moaning (Daxx) about the stoppage...it wouldn't have lasted until the end of the round...Manfredo wasn't exactly strolling back to his corner, his legs were shaky.
As for fighting Kessler, the only alternative that Palle has offered instead of fighting in Britain is fighting in Copenhagen, and

bhop kills calzaghe...waaaayy too crafty for calzaghe...what JC did to lacy, bhop would have done the same except he would have KO-ed him...winky beats calzaghe too...but its hard to gauge JC...so I'll just wait and see what happens

manfredo was nervous..but really was just happy to be there...during the post fight interview he said " I'm just happy to be talking to you Larry"
he wasn't there to win but rather to spar with a champion..but had he got lucky and landed one on JC that would have been icing on his already iced cake...

Have you ever seen a fighter that has been stopped by the referee not complain? Manfredo has a fighter's spirit, and any true fighter will complain if they're stopped.

The exception that proves the rule IMO, and RJJ in his prime was always a special case....he was practically unbeatable.
