Toney back with a win
Toney won a split decision over 10 rounds
-
Re: Toney back with a win
Toney won on two cards 98-92, 97-93. Batchelder prevailed 96-94 on the other card
-
Re: Toney back with a win
Only a SD... that doesn't bode well for Toney... Anyone see the fight?
-
Re: Toney back with a win
It shouldn't have been a SD win for Toney, not against this guy. Anyone see the fight? I don't think it was televised.
-
Re: Toney back with a win
It wasn't televised but they do record them and it's fed throughout the arena and I think on public access in San Jose. I think. I'll try to get a copy of the fight if I can, I think you can request copies of the tape from the Pavilion. There were a few fighters on the undercard I wanted to see, Tekeh Oruh and my man Karim Mayfield.
But come on, Toney is done. I don't even think he wants to fight anymore really. He didn't sound like it a couple months ago.

Re: Toney back with a win
Split decision..... either there was one really bad judge, or Toney shouldn't be fighting anymore.
Maybe it's both, actually.
-
Re: Toney back with a win
As I've said before, I'm no Toney fan, but its sad to watch a formerly great fighters skill decline fight by fight, and watching their margin of victory shrink against lesser opponents they should blow out. Maybe its time for him to hang em up... call me crazy, but I bet Toney would/will make a great trainer - though it'd be hard to take his nutritional advice seriously.

Why so he can SCHOOL Vitali? ;)

Re: Toney back with a win
I'm betting that James won but that the other guy was just throwing more punches or pushing the fight on Toney(which is the usual )and the judge who gave it to the other guy gave it because he was coming forward only Im betting

You're doing a lot of betting there. If Toney wanted to send a message to the rest of the heavyweight division, he needed a big KO. The only message he sent last night was "give me my last payday so I can go gently into that good night."

Duke it's too early for Morrison to fight Wald, if he even gets back to that level. Besides, we are talking about James "Lights Out" Toney right now.
:P

I wish we could see the fight to know how he fought.
If he's impressive he's looking at fights with Brock, Briggs Lyakhovich etc, if not it's going to be Morrison, Mesi and the Holyfield rematch :-X

Re: Toney back with a win
I'm sure it'll pop up on Youtube. i2itv was there I'm sure. You'll just have to bare with drawn back camera angles, crappy commentary and even crappier background music.

Re: Toney back with a win

But Toney did not impress Thursday night with a split-decision victory over Danny Batchelder, 98-92, 94-96, 97-93, in a 10-round bout.
Because while Toney improved his record to 70-6-3 while Batchelder, another blown-up former middleweight, fell to 25-5-1, Toney, who excels as a counter-puncher, was forced to be the aggressor. And the announced crowd of 4,269 at HP Pavilion decried the lack of action, booing heartily from the second round on.
"This performance was awful," admitted Toney, a former world champion in three divisions who weighed in at 229 after declaring early this month he would tip the scales at no more than 217. "I give myself a D-plus." Toney, who has fought as light as 155¾ pounds and as heavy as 257 in his career, won his first world title fighting under Bob Arum's Top Rank banner, knocking out IBF middleweight champ Michael Nunn in the 11th round May 10, 1991. Toney also won belts at super middleweight and cruiserweight.

Re: Toney back with a win
Thanks for the updates Miles & Amat.
Okay, if Toney is planning on doing something serious wit hhis carrer he needs to fight regularly.
Even as much as it pisses me off hearing about him taking on guys like his last opponent, if he fought reguary (like every 4 months), maybe it would (for a while) keep him in shape and reletively sharp.
What happens after that is anyones guess ???

Re: Toney back with a win
....WOW a boring split decision....Toney's ready for a title shot now!
-
Re: Toney back with a win
so I suppose James Toney has 70 wins now. Good milestone.

Re: Toney back with a win
Cc MILES for the news..
Im hoping its your typical judges hate toney scenario...
Ala montell griffin one.. Toney won that fight like crazy.. for the first 6 or 7 rounds of the first griffin fight he didnt get touched.. He was off balance a couple of times and everything was blocked..
Granted though.. Toney is hard to score.. It seems judges are just so half arsed today though.. All they see is punches bieng thrown..

I dunno man, did you watch the Spinks-Taylor fight? One judge scored it a landslide to Taylor and he barely threw a punch!

Click right back,
This is my first opportunity to post anything since I posted the result earlier. I have read all of the posts since with interest.
Toney is one of my favourite fighters and hearing he won by split decision disturbed me. This should have been an easy win for James. Of course, I havent seen the fight and this makes it all the more frustrating for me. I would like to judge with my own eyes what is happening with Toney.
Im surprised Toney didnt come out with more fire and try to make a statement. Plodding to a sloppy decision surely, was not the order of the day. Surely the boos from the crowd must have made some kind of impression. I dont know. Still, Toney admitted his performance was not good and 6 pounds lighter he was too.
I hope we see Toney in another relatively light fight and a few pounds more trimmer. And I hope he does this within 3 months....
I have not drawn a verdict on James Toney yet...

Lol.. I had taylor winning the fight ;) :P
Taylor did enough to win rounds.. All spinks did for several rounds was run slip and paw with the jab..lol
I guess we see i have that sort of mindset when it comes to scoring

I agree.. I think perhaps its worth carrying on with the weight loss...
But inportant more so to work on building muscle.. He looked strong for the second peter fight..
Even caught sam with a couple good shots and didnt look weak.. Just never got a rythym in the fight..
I will look for toney to pace himself to a big fight again ..hopefully a title fight and for him to get in shape..Even holyfield shape was good..

Exactly. I think the second Peter fight may have been a wake up call to James. He knows he was getting rocked by hard punches and he knows he lost that fight. That he will lose 6 pounds in a comeback against an unknown is a positive sign. So what if he looked rusty, its if he can build on it, bit by bit, is what im looking for. I want to see Toney back in action and soon. And I want to actually see the fight.

as expected. Danny boy is cagy and will make you pay for your mistakes. I didnt think it would be a walk over match..

Re: Toney back with a win
I take it still no luck on finding this fight? I looked myself and was unsucessful finding it.
I agree with you Miles completely. I think in another thread we were talking about this. Toney is one of my favorite fighters and to hear that it was a boring split decision fustrates me, I mean I want to see it first before I say to much though. But again like you said miles He did drop 6 pounds from the last fight, and thats good news I would also like him to stay busy maybe fight again within 2 months or so, so he can continue to take the wieght off, and stay sharp. Anyone finds the fight can they PM me with the link please, thanks.

Re: Toney back with a win
As much as i like Toney this is no suprise really because Toney has a habit of getting into close decision with lower class opponents Terry McGroom Dave Tiberi in which Toney was very lucky to get the decision against Tiberi he was so disgusted with the decision that Tiberi retired so jury is still out on Toney because us Toney fans know that Toney goes through his bad patches of getting into close fights with lesser boxers.
