World Cup Of Boxing II On August 11! Mexico versus Philippines!
http://www.fightnews.com/fightnews_2...uxDjEBsbv.html
Looks like Golden Boy Promotions will hold their second "World Cup of Boxing" on August 11 at the Arco Arena in Sacramento. The "Mexico vs Philippines" showdown will feature WBO bantamweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (34-5, 29 KOs) against former world champion Gerry Penalosa (51-6-2, 34 KOs), WBO super bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon (34-5, 29 KOs) against Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista (23-0, 17 KOs) and Miguel "Mickey Mouse" Roman (21-0, 15 KOs) against a Filipino opponent to be named.
No doubt I am going to that! Can't wait.

Re: World Cup Of Boxing II On August 11! Mexico versus Philippines!
Rey "boom2x" Bautista vs Daniel Ponce DeLeon is a must see event.
I too can't wait!

Re: World Cup Of Boxing II On August 11! Mexico versus Philippines!
too bad the guys who won the first world cp of boxing he did are like 74 by now
wtf did that take so long for???
also i thought it was tournement style, he should have done like puertorico vs phillipines and then do the winner vs mexico but im guessing all it really is is a name he puts on mexican fights which he knows he can make money off, unless he did do that
-
Re: World Cup Of Boxing II On August 11! Mexico versus Philippines!
btw, first event was mexico thailand, and i THINK it was 4-0 mexico, but it may have been 3-1, it was like 7 years ago and i barley remember

Re: World Cup Of Boxing II On August 11! Mexico versus Philippines!
Mexico beat Thailand
Fernando Monteil outpointed Phosawan.
Jhonny Gonzalez TKO'd Ratanachai Sor Vorapin.
Daniel Ponce De Leon decisioned Sod Looknongyangtoy.
Hugo Fidel Cazares KO'd Kaichon Sor Vorapin.
Those were the only 4 that counted and only the first three were on TV. The only Thai to get a win that night was Terdsak, and he won by split decision in an 8 round opening bout.

This is De La Hoya's personal project. He was basically solely responsible for this and he met with all the fighters and everything. I think it was a venue that caused the delay, then of course he started fighting again so he got preoccupied but Penosala - Gonzalez and Bautista - De Leon make it well worth the wait imo.
I thought it was one of the best cards that year. Gonzalez and De Leon are both fighting again and this time are more evenly matched. Can't wait.

Was it on PPV? Event like that is worth buying.

i dont think Top Rank will have any problems about making that fight. but since GBP is hesitant about making it a fight, arum has to look somewhere else.

This World Cup of Boxing sh*t sounds good. Anything to stir up a little more of a fan base for this great sport. Just like soccer brings out the nationalistic pride in millions of people, maybe World Cup Boxing could do something similar, even if it's on a reduced scale.

I hear 'ya....
I mean the 1st WCofB did wonders as far as numbers and all that so heres hoping this 2nd one does even better....

Re: World Cup Of Boxing II On August 11! Mexico versus Philippines!
Did it really do good by numbers? That's cool. I ate the first one up, excellent matchups. This one has the potential to be even better imo. Definitely has more high profile names. I hope they can get Fernando Monteil on board again but he's been wanting out of GBP so I don't know. Can't wait for this one I really can't.

Re: World Cup Of Boxing II On August 11! Mexico versus Philippines!
I really think these World Cup Of Boxing events should be yearly or like the olympics every 4 years, it will be great for our sport. and a World Cup title could maybe eradicate these abc titles. I really hope there is one title worth honor, the p4p title is the only thing left but this is just rankings, never any certain with everyones p4p list. A World Cup title would be nice under a fighters waist, they could have tournaments or something. it just sounds great hope and i'm sure we will get hungry fighters coming in, not these money greedy champions always worried about their purse. With hungry fighters will for sure get a heck of a fight, but these fed champs they take too little risk :(

Yes it did, I'll see if I can dig up the article for 'ya. :)

Good points and I agree on holding this something like once a year or something would be cool.

How the hell are you going to have it in the Philippines? How is that neutral. Northern California has a very sizable Filipino population, probably more so then any other Asian group. I don't know who that guy is but if he prevents those fights from coming to Sacramento...he'll be my most hated man in boxing.

The card has some great match-ups! Really looking forward to DeLeon/ Bautista.

Re: World Cup Of Boxing II On August 11! Mexico versus Philippines!
Any word of Z Gorres if he's fighting or not?
-
Re: World Cup Of Boxing II On August 11! Mexico versus Philippines!
He had to withdraw from the card he injured himself. I think it was his eye...not sure tho. Diosdado Gabi is replacing him I think.
-
Re: World Cup Of Boxing II On August 11! Mexico versus Philippines!
Was hoping to see him in fight for the first time. Better to play it safe tho if you have an eye injury.

I saw him on PPV live from Cebu against Fernando Montiel. He lost that one. It was a close fight that there was controversy on judges scorecards.

Haven't heard from the new that z Gorres is backing out. I know Gabi will also be fighting. I think I heard from the news that there will be 7 matchups. Not so sure though.

Re: World Cup Of Boxing II On August 11! Mexico versus Philippines!
Ponce De Leon v. Batista & Gonzalez v. Penalosa, this is a must see. Nor Cal pinoy making noise huh! Im rooting for the Tarahumara indian from Chihuahua. Is this PPV? regular hbo?
-
Re: World Cup Of Boxing II On August 11! Mexico versus Philippines!
Sounds good.
Gonzalez-Penalosa is interesting, I was really impressed by Penalosa against Ponce de Leon, scorecards were horrible. Gonzalez might be just too big though.
-
Re: World Cup Of Boxing II On August 11! Mexico versus Philippines!
I'm really looking forward to this.
Gonzalez-Penalosa will be good but the fight I want to see is Bautista-De Leon.
This would be good on the Pacquiao-Barrera undercard so it would fit in with the scheme of Mexico vs. Phillipines.

Bautista is already ripe for a title. He might win this match-up.
