Calzaghe ready to take on kessler in Copenhagen for 5 mill
http://www.bt.dk/article/20070530/SPORT08/70530003/0/A
Translation:
My translation of the article on their online paper:
"Calzaghe ready for Kessler
Mid May a fight between Mikkel Kessler and Joe Calzaghe did not seem likely.
After a meeting between Mogens Palle and Calzaghe-promoter, Frank Warren in London it was hard to se the dream fight becoming a reality, but now BT has learned, that Calzaghe is ready for a clash in Copenhagen in the fall.
- “We have told Mogens, that we are ready to box in Denmark on whatever terms he wants. That is his original offer. Ask Mogens what he has to say to that”, Frank Warren says to BT
The before mentioned offer was of five million dollars (27,5 mill. Kr) for Calzaghe for a match in Denmark in September.
- “He has sent something, yes. But this is not to be taken lightly, so there must be some lawyers involved. A lot of different numbers and offers are floating around. It is too early to say where it all ends. I have no further comments at the moment”, Mogens Palle told BT
This means that the dream fight is alive once again

Re: Calzaghe ready to take on kessler in Copenhagen for 5 mill
That'd be 2008 FOTY candidate.

Re: Calzaghe ready to take on kessler in Copenhagen for 5 mill
yep could well be mate, still pick Joe to win, we all know if he turns it on like he did against Lacy, the fight can only possibly end one way.
Dont think any one could live with Calazaghe on a nite like that again...
-
Re: Calzaghe ready to take on kessler in Copenhagen for 5 mill
This is the fight I most want to see for both guys.
The battle for the undisputed SMW championship.
I really hope this happens. Joe can't chase rainbows (Jones Jr., Hopkins et. al.)
for much longer.

Re: Calzaghe ready to take on kessler in Copenhagen for 5 mill
i think calzaghe would be stupid to go there. he would need to kill him to win, he aint go tthe power to score a KO anymore anmd wont get the decision. Kessler has done EVERY thign they can to get the fight on thier terms to get the win... people have slated joe, but if he does go there it would be silly imo

Do you not agree ;D

Agreed with Jangeorg i used to think you was silly when you said Kessler could beat Calzaghe but after watching Kessler more and more the more i realize that Kessler will give Calzaghe bad problems he has good skills quick hands and good workrate and as far as i know good chin and with Calzaghes bad hands i would give Kessler the edge i mean if Calzaghe broke his hands hardly landing anything against Manfredo what will happen against Kessler is the question ??
-
Re: Calzaghe ready to take on kessler in Copenhagen for 5 mill
True, Kessler is'nt very tolerant of getting hit! And lacey was a good bit shorter, Kessler/Calzaghe would be of a pretty similar build so this fight could take the best out of each guy and therefore out of th supermiddleweight division

The Manfredo fight wasn't pretty either in terms of judging

and if your on about the ref stopping it to early then yeah id o agree, but there are rules that would back the ref up, was it to early yeah - but lets not forget, the beating calzaghe give lacy, the ref could of stopepd it a shit load of times and no one would of said jack but didn't, that was a fuck up by a ref not some bullshit home town christ you make it out like young pete had a chance and the ref screwed him.

The Calzaghe camp would worry that they could get one of the dubious decisions that (righly or wrongly) Germany and Italy are so renowned for. They would see Denmark as being the same - very stupid, but I bet that's how they'll view it... cos this fight is going the distance no matter who wins it.And the same will The Kessler camp think,if the fight was in UK

Re: Calzaghe ready to take on kessler in Copenhagen for 5 mill
cool , calzaghe will win but at least he is finally fighting someone that we want
-
Re: Calzaghe ready to take on kessler in Copenhagen for 5 mill
This will be a true test of how good joe calzaghe really is, to most people.
-
Re: Calzaghe ready to take on kessler in Copenhagen for 5 mill
I like joe but I think people will just call kessler a hyped up nobody if he gets beat which I think he will and people will go back to bashing cal as someone who fights bums. Altho like the rest of the posters I'll actually believe this is happening when I see the two in the ring

I on the other hand don't agree. The more I have seen Calzaghe fight the more I think his workrate will give Kessler trouble, so if it goes the distance I am afraid that Calzaghw will take the victory on points, but I also think that Kessler has a good change on a TKO, I'm confident that Calzaghw cant take the power of Kessler combos if Kessler is able to hit him with them, and on the psychological level I will give the edge to Kessler I am not sure that Calzaghe really want to fight Kessler. But as it has turned out Kessler looks like the only choice for a opponent now. Unless Warren pulls a new Manfredo on the Calzaghe fans. An yes I will be there as well. IF IT HAPPENS.

British Judges are known around the world as some of the most bias, you have no pfoblem in Kessler fighting there. Double standard.

What? From what jangeorg's writing they're going to clash in the autumn of 2007. FOTY isn't judged along with the football season is it?
Anyhow...i was intrigued by the mention of this article yesterday, but couldn't find any reference to it in any of the English media, or translated sites.
However, it seems the Mogens Palle is now trying to throw obstacles in the way. Frank says they've accepted the offer, surely that is end of story. But Palle is now saying there are a lot of things to iron out. If it isn't one promoter it's the other. Personally I'd love a trip to Copanhagen to see the fight, but if it's made i'd like to see them insist on an impartial international row of judges and referee, neither from Denmark or Britain. After the farce in the first Cunningham/Wlodarczyk fights just to name one, it has to be 100% transparent.
Either way....I have an agreement with friends that wherever it would be held, we're going. And I've heard good things about Copanhagen as a party city, even if it is quite expensive.

Re: Calzaghe ready to take on kessler in Copenhagen for 5 mill
Well if the titles is on the line the judges are appointed by the boxing federations. So I don´t think it will be a big problem. But one thing is for sure, there will allways be an home advantage. I hate to see a good fight spoiled by crooked judges.
-
Re: Calzaghe ready to take on kessler in Copenhagen for 5 mill
Warren needs to pull his fucking finger out and get Joe a decent fight. I'm sick of reading about it.

You and every other boxing fan in the world. For once, I think that Kessler's home advantage would be slightly diminished as opposed to all his other fights, cause I could see quite a few people from Britain making the journey over there to support Calzaghe, so the more balanced the crowd the better.

Re: Calzaghe ready to take on kessler in Copenhagen for 5 mill
All I know is Joe better sign something soon, or Kess is gonna sign a fight with Jones Jr, and Taylor is gonna sign a fight with Pavlik. Then Joe gets screwed and fights a can of corn, because I doubt he will be able to sign a fight with the BHOP-Winky winner. Unless of course, he wants to come to the states, and probably settle for less money.

Re: Calzaghe ready to take on kessler in Copenhagen for 5 mill
I'll believe it when I see it. The pounds very strong at the moment though, don't think $5m can get you much in britain nowadays. ;D
Really, they should stop making these offers through the media and get together and sort the fucking small print out.
I'd back Calzaghe home or away on UD, he has a lot of confidence and won't be daunted wherever it's held. I think this is the only real available fight for him at the moment, to many question marks on Taylor.

I don't think he was saying he was. He said if Joe puts on a smilar performance, Kessler won't stand a chance.

CC bro, we don't get many references to the currency exchange rates on this forum, and that is to be commended! I'd be with you on Calzaghe's UD, but I reckon Kessler could get worn out and maybe Calzaghe would get a late stoppage, as Kessler's failure to catch him with the big punches tires the Dane out. But then again, I wouldn't bet against a flash knockdown, but Calzaghe's got up and won before.
-
Re: Calzaghe ready to take on kessler in Copenhagen for 5 mill
It appears a lot of people on here are either new to boxing or haven't followed Calzaghe's career as closely as others. To see he'll get knocked out is nonsense. His chin is too solid and his heart will make him get back up even if it's a flash knockdown. Trust me he'll keep coming at you and he's got more ring generalship savvy than your average Andrade or Mundine. They only chance Kessler has of winning is a dodgy points decision or if Calzaghe injures his hand mid-fight.
Unfortunately I believe this will be the case. I read Calzaghe's autobiography this week and it appears his problems with his hands go further than what most people might think. He's had hand injuries going into a fight or during them more than if they were a 100% it appears. It's clear from the manfredo fight which lasted only 3 rounds how brittle they are. When all is said and done Calzaghe is a far better fighter/boxer than Kessler and I hope for all our sakes it's proved without complication. No offence to Kessler fans but he's just a supped up version of Mario Veit in my opinion - Tailor-made for Calzaghe.
-
Re: Calzaghe ready to take on kessler in Copenhagen for 5 mill
Calzaghe has got a rock solid chin, only had a couple of flash knock downs and he's got back up and destroyed them! To say Kessler would knock him out, remember Lacy woz supposed to be one of the biggest punchers p4p look what happened there.
Have faith gona be a Calzaghe would stop him with a late TKO.

The one difference I will point to with this one is that Kessler is significantly faster than Lacy was, so I'd reckon that will cause Calzaghe some problems. The reason Lacy never knocked out Calzaghe was because he never managed to catch him flush with that famed left hook of his. Calzaghe has a very good chin, but getting up after a knockdown against Kabary Salem and Byron Mitchell is different to the power packed by Kessler and Lacy. If he gets caught flush, it will be the biggest test of that chin, but I still think Calzaghe gets it by a UD or late TKO.
-
Re: Calzaghe ready to take on kessler in Copenhagen for 5 mill
I don't believe for a second that Joe Calzaghe will go to Denmark for this fight. A fight with Jermain Taylor is still far more likely. And if he fights Kessler ever, he's not going to agree to do it in Copenhagen. he's never left his back yard his whole career--there's absolutely no way he'll do it for a fight that's not in Vegas against someone who generates US PPV buys.
