Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
Ever post i see on a Tyson vs whoever there is always a huge amount of people pulling for mike and it is hard for me to under stand. I mean i read a posts saying that Prime mike would beat a prime Ali or Forman or Holmes. When there asked why Tyson would win all the say are these words "Tyson would just win.'' Now not all people say that some try to explain it so i won't get on there case about. But i read alot about Tyson and it doesn't wow me like it does others. So he had 2 year prime where he either beat ok people and a way past it Larry Holmes at 38. Then He gets beat by a ok fighter Douglas then sent to prison for a while. Then he has some fights which are easy wins against ok people and then losses to Evander who is 4 years older past his prime and has a heart condition and losses twice to him and form there his career goes down the toilet.
Now i do not hate Tyson but simple want to understand why people like him so much and please you so i would like you the fans to tell me why and to point out anything that i am not correct about. You also free to say that i don't know what i am talking about if want to i don't mind.

Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
Prime Tyson was the ultimate crowd pleaser. He didn't go into a fight just to win, he went in there to KO his opponents in the worst way possible. He threw fluid, fast and brutal combinations! Always came forward, had a great chin. He gave off that aura of invincibility. He was already going downhill before he fought Douglas..too young..too much sh*t going on in his life that he didn't know how to react too.
It's hard because Tyson peaked and then went down hill so quickly. I don't think prime Tyson couldve beat a prime Ali. I do think he wouldve given Frazier a hard time.
I admit I always used to always over rate Tyson and it wasn't until recently I realized that a lot of guys wouldve given him problems. He wiped the floor with Holmes and even though Holmes was getting old he still beat Mercer and went 12 with Holyfield 4 years after he got destroyed by Tyson so he wasn't THAT past it.

Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
But i think if holmes was in his prime it would of been a different story but thats just what i think.
-
Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
He's held so high because of Mike tyson's Punchout. ;)

Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
Prime Tyson was the ultimate crowd pleaser
In a nutshell, that's it.
I loved to watch his fights and I bought every single PPV (as soon as i was earning) because you never knew what to expect. I did find his style very exiting. When i was a kid....everybody knew who Tyson was, girl or boy, mother or father, grandma or grandad.
dasamm is right, he was as crowd pleasing as you can get.

Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
Because he came to fight. He didn't pussyfoot around. He pulverized the body. Just very exciting to watch. He always got my adrenaline pumping.

well styles make fights and Holmes wasnt quite as rangy and strong as a prime ali or foreman woulda been (i am sure they would beat prime mike); i can see a prime Tyson givin Holmes a lot of trouble with his relentless rushing, swarming style. Mike Tyson in his prime was awesome...not that he wouldve beaten all the rest...but he brought a hell of a lot of excitement into his fights. He went in to take people's heads off and was BLASTING people out of there; just ruining them. THat's what people want to see most the time. The big KO...the one punch bomb that levels it lights out for the other guy. Tyson fights gave them that. Every time u saw him u knew someone was getting the living daylights beat out of them. Even as he got older he was still entertaining. Whether it was trying to break Botha's arm or biting Holyfield's ear or trying to streetfight Lennox Lewis at the presser, you always got some kind of crazy drama or entertainment...and in the end that's what Mike is. A performer. A great entertainer. And like it or not that is a big part of being a great pro boxer. I will always consider Mike Tyson one of my all time favorites, regardless of the fact that he is not number one on the top of the list.

Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
Tyson was a beast. An untamed animal. He was the shot in the arm. After watching a boxer like Holmes for so many years, then a slickster like Spinks, people were amazed with Mike. He is what people were waiting for at the time. Watching Mike was like being in a mosh pit, pure adrenaline.

Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
Mike is not underrated but he is underapreciated the boxing world has been in decline since Mike's retirement! he was a product of his environment.

Yes i think your right mate it would have gone about 6 rounds ;D

Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
I take it you don't think much of Holmes but at least he didn't lose to a Buster Douglas
-
Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
Because he did'nt fight Buster Douglas but i know this he got knocked cold by Iron Mike Tyson
-
Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
at 38 years of age and that one of his biggest wins. Larry Holmes beat Ali at 38 and stopped him does that mean he stop Ali at his prime as well and don't forget rocky that beat the 38 year old Louis.
-
Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
Ali retired he did'nt get knocked cold like Holmes never in all Holmes career has anyone done to him what Tyson did ;)
-
Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
Well i guess i let tyson get his glory for defeating a Larry Holmes who was years past his prime and you can't say with a staight face that larry was the same in his 20's then he was when he was 38.
-
Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
Yes Holmes was 38 but his only 2 defeats were points defeats prior to Tyson to Spinks Tyson knocked him cold Holmes went on to fight for many more years fighting twice for world title he was only ever stopped once in all his years as a pro and that man was Tyson.

Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
I guess for the same reason they would like a dumb ol fighter Frank Bruno.
HA! Just kiddin' you!
-
Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high

Most people know my feelings on this, but just wanna pick up on the point above:
Most champions that have dominated an era, did not face GREAT opposition and people will happily put them in their top 10 lists ;) If you have an argument about Tyson it cannot be based on his opposition or you would have to apply to virtually every dominant champion in history - coz the heavyweight division has traditionally only ever had 1 great fighter in each era (with the exception of the early seventies and ninieties)
Proof in point - check the opposition of............
Jack Dempsey
Rocky Marciano
Jack Johsnon
Joe Louis
Sonny Liston
Larry Holmes

Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
But he didn't dominate a era he only was there for two years and then got knocked out by a ok fighter douglas and how much out of his prime could of he had been by then. Not his oppistion i question Big H it is that i think against great fighters he crumbled and i dont think he dersves a spot in the top ten maybe the top 15 or 20, But by the same token i understand what you mean.

And alot of us posters on the board were in our teens when he came to power...you always think your generation of whatever is better than those after and the best compared to the past.....He was just a monster! Everbody wanted to see a Tyson fight!!!

He dominated 1986 - 1990 - that's an era
+ There is no time definition on a prime
All opinions m8 ;)

Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
Tyson is liked because don king was the ultimate promoter..King lined up the bums and Tyson did what any guy with knockout power would do he knocked them out...that's pretty much it..Tyson had some extremely valuable tools that would have made him dominant, but he lacked the mental aspects and he was a coward as far as fighting guys who could take his best shot (according to every trainer that ever trained him) meaning that he could dish it out, but couldn't take it...
he didn't beat anyone worth mentioning...the only thing he ever did was win the heavyweight crown at 20, but that was more timing than anything else..holyfield, lewis, bowe all would have beaten berbick...
Tyson was nothing more than boxing's version of a boy band...his following is simply generated from masterful promotion and advertisement by his handlers..that's it, none of the people he beat did anything but get knocked out and quit the sport all together after that..and when he finally faced the real heavys of his generation he was beaten soundly, and its extremely convienent for anyone who supports tyson as being great to say (well he was past his prime) his prime was when he was 20-22 when he was knocking out all them bums then when he lost to douglass is prime was over at 23....when really what happened was, the fighters weren't going down so easily anymore and he actually had to box to win a fight and couldn't mentally do it..

true...he was the closest you could come to a sure bet.....you didn't bet against him unless you were insane....at least until Rooney, D'amato, Atlas and Roach were gone......

Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
I get tired of the "who did Tyson beat " arguement ,
Because regardless of who he was fighting against, you could just see his skill, his movement, his speed and power , no HW rolled , ducked and punched like him, it was just amazing.
You can say it is easy to look good against crap opposition but it isn't easy to look as good as he did.

Exactly mate - it amazes me how people's memories are not capable of forgetting all of the crap that came after Douglas and just focus on his Prime, However short that was.
I ask people, if he wasn't that great, why did nobody since Ali, and nobody since create so much excitement and get talked about so much. Mid to late 80s people talked about his boxing, so he wasn't famed for his life outside the ring. He was 1-42 with the bookies to beat Douglas, when has ANY fighter ever been that favoured
It's becuase he was an incredible fighter and just coz he is shit now and basically has been shit for the last 18 years doesn't setract from the fact that at his best he was amazing
...and last point that I always make.....NOT one boxing expert in the world would've had Tyson outside their top 5 heavyweights of all time if asked after the Spnks fight. So that is the end of the argument really, becuase what happended after is irrelevant if we are talking about "Prime"

Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
So were would you rank Tyson on the best heavyweights in the history of the sport. an as far as his domination i count the years of him being champ which was 2 years 1988-1990 but you could feel different about i guess but what i meant by his rain was the 2 years he was champion.
-
Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
prime tyson loses to holyfiled 10 out 10 times..and prime lewis beats him 10 - 10 aswell so i dont see how he could possibly be rated higher than either one of them..
-
Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
Big H i didn't mean his prime i meant his career as a whole i don't think he is on the top ten list.

1986-1990 he was champ then again in 1996 where you get 1988 from he is definately in top 10 probably 8

Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
Wbc heavyweight champion in 1996 and 87 got the ibf and between 1988 and 1990 was recongized as the heavy weight champion of the world because he had both belts under him.
-
Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
in 87 he was WBC,WBA,IBF champ actually mate he was undisputed champ are you another Tyson hater
-
Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
your right i am sorry i miss read the book my bad but what i meant is he was the undisputed champ between those years and no i don't hate tyson but the more i look at his career the more i just dont get why people liked him so much see tyson was before my time so i was not so swept up by him.
-
Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
People loved the big ko's the excitement then the fact he won the world title at the age of 20 undisputed by 21 i can't see anyone ever beating his youngest ever heavyweight champ record.A young man just out of his teens putting a world of pain on grown men in there late 20's early 30's just awesome im a massive Tyson fan i grew up watching him
-
Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
Well i agree with you that i was a bit to harsh on his career but i was never really a tyson fan i was a holyfeild and also a lewis fan and when i was growing up all i saw was the tyson after douglas so i always never cared him very much but i dont hate the guy i jsut not his biggest fan and yea i should of not been so opionated on it because i try to avoid that when i bring up a subject.
-
Re: Mike Tyson why do people hold him so high
