Who are the most underrated boxers of all time
Well the top ones on my list whould have to be these two boxers
1. Holmes-Wbc champion 1978-1984, Ibf champion 1984-1985,general recongised as the champ form 1980-1985 and he defended his title 20 and cleared out the divsion. Yet if you ask most people who larry holmes is they will say Larry Who? Or they rember when he got his clocked clean at 38 by a mike tyson in his prime.
2. Lennox Lewis- A two time heavyweight champion who beat every on in his era and avenged every lose he ever had. But people will always remeber him Being knocked out but Rochman and McCall.
Those are my most underrated people i hope some other people will add to that list.

Jack Johnson : held as some kind of boxing god in most peoples eyes so I don't know what you mean by underrated there.
Herol Graham : failed to capture a world title against Mccalum and Jackson so is he is underrated , he really can't be rated that highly anyway can he ?
I agree with Larry Holmes, Dont know anything about laing except that he had a win vs Duran.

Die hard fans only know about Johnson i didn't even know about Johnson in 2005 so you gotta look at it from that point of view Graham was overshadowed because of Benn Eubank and not many people realize how talented he was because imo he could of beat Benn and Eubank.

true true not many know about Jack Johnson , he is more of a historical figure than a boxer in most peopels eyes too, but those who do know his name i think rate him very highly , id call him unknown rather than under rated.
Yea not too sure about Graham but i see your point , considering he was outboxing Jackson all the way to getting knocked out , who knows if he could have beaten benn and eubank.

Well the best thing on winkey resume was the wins against mosley and thats it

Re: Who are the most underrated boxers of all time
I think Carlos Monzon is underrated. Over a dozen title defenses. Beat Griffith, Benvenuti, Napoles, and pretty much every other decent middleweight of the era. Was undefeated for the last 13 years of his career. He could easily be a top 20 all time but hardly ever gets mentioned that high.

Re: Who are the most underrated boxers of all time
Actual now that i think about i think that gene tunny was underrated he was a light weight champion and a heavy weight champ out boxed Dempsey twice and avenged his only lost.

Didn't lower his stance in my eyes. I just figured that you can't keep on winning forever. The guy had something like 19 straight title defenses, including victories over fighters better than McGuigan ever was. I just figured Pedroza was wore out. Time to hang em up.

Re: Who are the most underrated boxers of all time
I really know nothing of this Pedroza guy people are talking about anyone got film on him

He was WBA champ at the same time Salvador Sanchez was WBC champ. For whatevever reason, a unifier fight never came off.

It never came off cause I think Sal early on from when he won the title he had his thing against Lopez and then the Don King & Arum began the build up of Gomez-Sanchez while 'El Alacran' was more on going around the world defending his title.
You wanna talk about a real champ. just check out the locations of Pedrozas fights. :)

Re: Who are the most underrated boxers of all time
Nino Benvenuti
And by the way Mick i mentioned Laing because talent wise no one knows how much talent he had and threw it all away and is never mentioned now his win over Duran was a great masterclass.

IMO, that would certify him under 'wasted talent' not an underrated fighter.
He had a great win against Duran but what else did he do?
Nothing.

Re: Who are the most underrated boxers of all time

larry holmes

Re: Who are the most underrated boxers of all time
If Charles is underrated i think that Walcott should go up there as well he remained good boxer despite his old age and he was never given the benefit of the doubt.

Re: Who are the most underrated boxers of all time
Trinidad to an extent..
Vargas..But perhaps more skillwise..But he could have done so much more..some say he was ruined.. But he could also have alot bigger legacy if he had padded his record fighting good fighters instead of fighting and loosing four fights to three Great fighters..
Toney.. Massively underrated..One of the many examples of the expression the only person who could defeat a guy with this much skill is himself..
Lennox is underrated for sure..Depending on how you look at it..He has got alot of attention..But between his retirement and a few more years he's still in that phase where people begin to miss him and his career will pass the test of time and he will be rated higher..
Zab Judah.. Terrifically underrated.. Maybe people just hate admitting hes a great fighter because of him as a person..Lol

Re: Who are the most underrated boxers of all time
Oh My God. This is next to impossible, SOOOOOOO many great fighters are underrated or unheard of today for whatever reason. So I'll just list a couple.
One of my favorite boxers ever is Ike Williams. In my opinion, he is one of the greatest lightweights of all time but you'd be hard pressed to find him on a lot of greatest lightweight list. Truly overlooked imo, but man he was such an exciting fighter. One of the more tremendous combination punchers ever.
-
Re: Who are the most underrated boxers of all time
James Toney
The guy has practically done it all, if a fighter were to boast his accomplisments Toney would be the first guy to say 'been there, done that' lol

Re: Who are the most underrated boxers of all time
yea some elese besides me said Tunney nice post there motor dude

Re: Who are the most underrated boxers of all time
Ike quartey was an excellent fighter in his prime..
If he could have stuck around after his two losses and fought and beat some decent names instead of disapearing for all those years just to be back in his twighlight years now he could have had a great legacy.. Its a shame cos he wont get anywhere near the legacy he deserves..
And it shows how important a robbery like the forrest fight is on a legacy like his..
In future the fact that his record says a loss but anyone who saw the fight would know he won..
I think that robs him alot of legacy..Forrest is a great fighter and a big name and vernon doesnt have enough big wins to tell how good a fighter he is..

Re: Who are the most underrated boxers of all time
Johnny Tapia, now there is a movie waiting to be seen!
