How highly would Mayweather be rated if he accomplishes the following feat?
1. Defeats Mosely
2. Defeats Margarito
3. Defeats Cotto
All in consecutive order then retires. How high would he be ranked? Can he be a top 5 all time great?
-
Re: How highly would Mayweather be rated if he accomplishes the following feat?
Umm probably 9th 10th or just below like 11th somewhere round there.
-
Re: How highly would Mayweather be rated if he accomplishes the following feat?
After that, IMO yes he deserves to be Top 5 All Time. He gets degraded because of that attitude but he's a great fighter. These guys fight great but PBF is a great fighter. ;D
-
Re: How highly would Mayweather be rated if he accomplishes the following feat?
who else would be left for him to fight? To retire undefeated and to let your last 4 opponents be high quality and potential hall of fame opponents got to count for something.
-
Re: How highly would Mayweather be rated if he accomplishes the following feat?
I don't know if i would be any further impressed...i already think he's one of the greatest and that he could be everyone on this list easily....
-
Re: How highly would Mayweather be rated if he accomplishes the following feat?
He'll be rated a lot higher in 20 years time. Every great fighter's legend grows the longer they have been out of the ring.
We talk about guys like Leonard, Hearns and Duran as if they are almost God like but there is no reason to think that if these guys fought today, and against the same fighters as Floyd that they would all be undefeated.
De La Hoya would have proved troublemsome, especially for Duran, Judah also.
Plus all three of these guys were naturally a lot bigger than Floyd who started out as a superfeatherweight.
It's unfair to make direct comparisons between them and him.
-
Re: How highly would Mayweather be rated if he accomplishes the following feat?
he'd still not probably make top 10..because no matter what any new era fighter does he will never be placed in the top ten...because for some reason nothings ever good enough..whereas the old school fighter get all these excuses and their records and opposition aren't as throughly picked apart like the new guys...
back then amazingly everyone was a contender and a great mark on a champions record,
now its "well he's a bum, he's a bum, oh he won an alphabet belt, he's not a real contender, he was overmatched any way, he didn't belong in the ring, so what he beat an undefeated contender"
floyd would have to beat cotto (but he's too green)
..................................mosley (he's too old)
..............................margarito (he was just a big gatti)
..............................hatton (he was one dimensional, too small)
..............................paul williams (too green and overrated)
..............................winky (too slow and plodding)
.............................bhop( he finally got old)
then floyd loses to one of the klitschkos and its you see I told you he wasn't that great.....floyd couldn't do enough to ever be considered top 10..and top 5 is just insane not because he isn't deserving but just because he's born in an era where the majority is never satisfied...he fight 80 more times and still it wouldn't be enough....
but that's just my opinion..right now i think he's top 20 if he beats mosley @ 147 then i'd put in top 10
-
Re: How highly would Mayweather be rated if he accomplishes the following feat?
if he beats the guys you stated then top 10 for sure, in my opinion top 5
-
Re: How highly would Mayweather be rated if he accomplishes the following feat?
I'd love to see Floyd do the following to end out his career:
Fight Spinks, win the Jr. Middleweight Championship.
Then fight Mosley @ 154 in defense of the 154 pound championship. (Mosley would have defeated Clottey coming into the fight).
By then Cotto would be ready to step up to 154 (having beaten Judah, Margarito along the way).
The last fight of Floyds career would be against Kelly Pavlik who would have won the middleweight champion ship by KO from Taylor.
That would be a great career... Ring championships @ lightweight, Welter, Jr. middle & middle.

Lets be honest Margorito and Cotto have beat no one just yet, Cotto has the potential to be a great but only time will tell if he beats these guys but Margorito dpesnt imo do anything for his atg potential.
Also Galaxy fighting Pavlik???????? Do you want to send Floyd to an early grave??

Yeah bro, I give him an easier shot at Taylor but can't see Taylor being on top when Floyd would be ready to step up. Remember DLH made it to middle! Just disregard the result.

If he does that and retires undefeated who could argue he isn't at least top 10 all time.

I don't think this would change that much in all honesty. Will people really ever put Floyd above guys like Duran, Benny Leonard, Billy Conn, Ezzard Charles? I doubt beating an old Mosley, and two unknowns in the historical sense will do much to raise his stock. I mean Wright beat Mosley and it much less to enhance his stock then beating Bernard HOpkins will despite Bernard being 43.

I think if he beat Mosley and then moved up and beat the winner of Hopkins/Wright and then beat Taylor he could be top 5 ever. But with those guys I am not sure. Margarito and Cotto are good fighters, but not all timers yet to warrant Mayweather going way up in stature to top 5 ever from beating them. But that would solidify him to being top 20 for sure.
-
Re: How highly would Mayweather be rated if he accomplishes the following feat?
I still say up until now Mosley is only one that makes a difference, and the winner of Cotto/Judah facing the winner of Margaritto/Williams.

Yes. 20 years from now, he'll be rated higher. That's just how it goes.

Re: How highly would Mayweather be rated if he accomplishes the following feat?
When Floyd moved to light welter, Hatton, Cotto and Tszyu were making all the noise. He fought none of them! If he fought any one of them I would never consider posting this.
If he fights Cotto soon that would be great, Mosley is past his best and Margarito is not as good as so many people keep saying.

Judah is arguably Cotto best opponent so far in his career, Hatton didn't want the fight & Tszyu was in semi-retirement. If Cotto beats both Judah & the winner of Margarito/ Williams then he will indeed be great opponent. Back then he was still trying to make his name!

Depends on a number of variables...
How convincingly does he defeat them?
How impressive do those fighters look before/after they fight Floyd?
For example, if Cotto barely scrapes by Judah, a Floyd victory over Cotto doesn't look as impressive as it would if Cotto destroys Judah in a couple rounds.
My general stance is that if Floyd cleans out 147 over the next 3 or 4 fights, he'll be at least Top 20 all-time.

I agree with that mate. But can you see him cleaning out the 147 division?

Mayweather won't do it... Fight them all.

Re: How highly would Mayweather be rated if he accomplishes the following feat?
the only person floyd need to fight is mosley..cotto,williams,margarito would all be torn up by floyd....
-
Re: How highly would Mayweather be rated if he accomplishes the following feat?
i would put him in top 15 of all time if he got thos wins
-
Re: How highly would Mayweather be rated if he accomplishes the following feat?
Every division he has moved up into he has fought the number 1 of that division he has beaten some good fighters and made them look average he is a 5 weight champ and a 6 time champ not alot left to prove perhaps he is already top 10 or perhaps 11 at worst.
-
Re: How highly would Mayweather be rated if he accomplishes the following feat?
if hatton can knnock out jc then the only fight flloyd needs imo is ricky. cotto and the others r unproven, hatton would have then taken kostya and castillo, but i feel unless hatton fdights flloys before this time nx yr hes gnna b to old

Re: How highly would Mayweather be rated if he accomplishes the following feat?
Cotto is too slow, Magarito has not fought anyone IMO and I think Mosely would beat floyd. I do not think that floyd can handle the heat that mosely still brings. Shane is just as fast as pbf but shane hits much harder. I dont see shane standing around waiting to be hit. I see shane by KO! But we all know PBF dont want none of that!

When was Gatti rated number 1 at 140??

Re: How highly would Mayweather be rated if he accomplishes the following feat?
If Floyd beats Mosley and then beats whoever comes out the winner of the Margo - Williams - Judah - Cotto mini tournament. His stock would definitely go up in the eyes of all that see him now. But when we talk about all time greatness he needs more. 20 to 30 years from now guys just won't know if these guys were that good.
Floyd is a great fighter. But the fact that he is so much better than the competition will hurt him. He just does not have that big name, that measuring stick. 20 or 30 years from now they will see DLH in his reccord but they will also see that DLH was passed his prime and even in his prime has loss in most of the big time fights he was in. They will not pay much attention to the fact that some of those losses were highly disputed.
I think the only thing that will give FLoyd a top 5 all time great status is longevity. The man is 30 but he is a very young 30. I can easily see him fighting a good 5 years without any severe loss in agility and reflexes. In five years he could have 8 to 10 fights easy.
Lets say 8
1. Spinks
2. Mosley
3. Winner of tournament (if not Judah)
4. Clottey
5. Pavlik (or current MW champ if other at this time)
6. Young hungry powerfull up and commer (Bassically any new undefeated feared fighter that gets people talking and saying, maybe he could beat Floyd)
7. Winky if he is still around (B-Hop might be way too old by this time)
8. Taylor if he is still undefeated and has not moved up over 168
Maybe if he draws another big name out of retirement in Tito and beats him, it would also be a huge win. No matter how much past it Tito is a W over him is big.
This would mean a win over big names of last era in DLH, Mosley and Tito. A win over this era's big names in Cotto or Margo, Pavlik and Taylor. A win over very game and tough contenders in Spinks and Clottey. A win against the future big name. And finally a win against a master class fighter in Winky.
There is no reason why he couldn't pull this off. He has the skill and determination to do it. And even if he looses one of these fights, the caliber of opposition is such that he will not lose his place among the all time greats. And if he succeeds in winning, considering that he would have to beat Taylor at 168 which would make him the only 7 division world champ in history, we would not be talking top 5 all time. We will be talking is he better that Ray Robinson?
-
Re: How highly would Mayweather be rated if he accomplishes the following feat?
Even if he did all that, I don't think most boxing historians would rank him ahead of SRR. And doing all of that is a TALL order. That's like saying, "if Klitshko beats Brewester in the rematch, then beats Peter, Vitali, Ivan Drago, Apollo Creed, lures Tyson out of retirement, and then fights MMA and beats Fedor, he'll be an ATG HW".
-
Re: How highly would Mayweather be rated if he accomplishes the following feat?
If he did all that he's 1-3 no problem
-
Re: How highly would Mayweather be rated if he accomplishes the following feat?
Nothing PBf ever does will be good enough...if he were to beat every top ten contender from 140 to 147 and unify all the belts in the process...they'd still say well the divisions are weak...in order to be great he has to lose..then when he loses they'll say the great champions don't lose to contenders....
maybe he should go to panama and beat up around 80 bums and pad his record then maybe he'll be in the top ten...it seemed to work for duran...
-
Re: How highly would Mayweather be rated if he accomplishes the following feat?
Who you beat and how you beat them count. If he coasts and outpoints any of the people on that list it doesn't count as much as if he beats them bloody and or stops them. Make their corner throw the towel in, etc....
That's how he gets to be an alltime great. Take a risk and actually fight a top fighter. Mosley would be perfect. Not just run and be content to win rounds, try to ko him. If he did that with ODH and won we wouldn't be having this ...."nothing PBF does is good enough" argument. He needs to take a risk and make the career defining fight.

so he's not an all time great because he minimizes the other guy's chances of winning. That's ridiculous.. I don't see how having a close, beat him up, knockdown bloodyt fight would make him great...
a top fighter? Corrales, castillo, weren't top? Oscar? Basically he should take a risk and try to beat them at their own fight...take a risk by giving the other guy more chances to ko him? he stopped corrales knocked him down five times too....stopped hernandez, chavez, and manfredy...

i could care less i personally like him more than leanord
-
Re: How highly would Mayweather be rated if he accomplishes the following feat?
It seems like a tall order to beat all those guys but the point is he needs to stick around and fight nothing but world class champions from here on for the next 5 years. It is not impossible for him to do this considering that he has not been in any wars and has rarely been hit clean in his entire career.
Most likely non of this will happen but if the question is what does he have to do to make the top 5 all time greats? well he has to do great things, extraordinary things. Things that make people think that there is no way he can do that, then do it.
Ali achieved greatness when he fought and beat the man who had destroyed the man who beat him. Whoever thaught that he would beat Forman at that time? Very few.
Leonard achived greatness by coming out of retirement and fighting the most dangerous man in the MW division. Nobody gave him much of a shot against Hagler. I guarantee you that if Leonard had not fought Hagler he would not be considered top 10 all time.
Some people try to achieve greatness but fail. For example, Tito wanted to go all the way up to 175 and challange Roy Jones. He knew this would be almost impossible. But he also knew that that is what it would take to achieve greatness. He failed, but imagine if he had won the MW tournament and then had beat Roy Jones. He would no doubt be considered top 10, maybe top 5 all time. Nobody would've even remembered how he was outboxed by Oscar.
Being an All Time Great is not about being the most skilled. It is about doing great things in that ring.

For the reccord. I am not stating what he should do so that I personally consider him ATG. I am stating my idea on the kind of feat that it would take for the generall public to consider him an ATG and for him to remain considered an ATG in the long years to come.
