Re: In Your Opinions What Is The Best Martial Arts To Learn For A Beginner ??
I am not sure it is a martial arts but wrestling, but a martial art I would think Judo.. I have a friend who talks about judo and it sounds like a pretty good thing to know defensively.

Re: In Your Opinions What Is The Best Martial Arts To Learn For A Beginner ??
I heard Aikidos good because you use your opponents attacks against them.

I do not know much about Aikidos, but Judo is similar to that it sounds like. The person comes at you and you counter the move. Just plain wrestling is also a good thing for someone to learn.

I would have to say muay thai (thaiboxing)
It learns you to fight with the use of all your extremities (legs, knees, elbows and fists)
Either punching or kicking

Bushidokan, involves all of the striking basics and great self defense...The class also offers a lot of sparring with controlled contact, so you would have a lot of experience against all levels of competition including your instructor...They also incorporate time for hardening the knuckles and feet...Just a good all around art of the offensive...Its like a street fight turned into an art... As you get deeper into the program there will be katas and more complex routines to get to the next level...What i really enjoyed was seeing that you cannot progress past orange belt unless you are able to break a board with every single kick and punch that you have learned....and you have to be 16 or 18 to even qualify to earn a black belt...I can't stand 12 yr olds being a black belt..thats BS IMO.
thats my :twocents:

If you already know boxing and you box then (not being biased) but Judo will serve you well and then you will cover both ranges.
Judo is a fantastic art/sport. Its tough but rewarding and as far as self defence is concerned it works very well since most altercations take place in a confined space or within clinching distance.
Also due to the fact you have to fight for your grades and in competition its pressure tested. You try to throw against a fully resiting opponent and if you go to the ground then you try to submit a fully resiting opponent. In other words none of this choregraphed crap where someone comes at you with a bottle that is so telegraphed that you grab the wrist and try the old twisty wristy funky shit (that never works). Its full on balls to the wall fighting without punches.
Judo teaches you close proxemic awareness, body mechanics, weight displacement. Best of all it teaches you how to ednt hings quickly from the clinch. be under no illisuion though it takes time and you have to invest time before you will be proficient enough to defend yourself with it.
I also train in WW2 combatives. Chin jabs, slaps, hammerfists for striking. All gross motor skills that work well in situation where adrenal stress can cause you to forget the fancy moves you learned in your Ninja class.
If you want any further info then just ask.

For fitness I would say Boxing/Kickboxing...if you call that a M-Art.
But if your talking defense wise, I'd say Tae-Kwon-Do.
Did that for a year. Loved it. Learnt alot in a short time.
CAN NOT BE OLD SCHOOL BOXING THOUGH!

Re: In Your Opinions What Is The Best Martial Arts To Learn For A Beginner ??
In my youth i was a national champion at judo and found it really good.
I put my two kids trough a year of judo since you really learn balance and composure in close combat.
But never did i experience the thrills i had with boxing and muay thai

Dude stick around. I think i am the only Judoka that posts regularly on the MMA forum.
Judo is coming more to the forefront in MMA so its good to see. I haven't trained in a while since arthritis has caught up with me a bit but hoping to get back into it in the next couple of months.

Re: In Your Opinions What Is The Best Martial Arts To Learn For A Beginner ??
Boxing and jiu jitsu/BJJ will give you all the skills you need. Judo and Sambo are good too. But I'd use those techniques more as a supplemetary type deal. Excellent throws in both though.

See Brockton i would have to disagree a bit there mate. From a self defence perspective you want to keep the fight standing. In a bar fight or protecting yourself from some scumbag then the ground is the last place you want to be. Even if the guy hasnt got any mates who want to jump on your head whilst you are trying to get the guy in a omoplata then some bystander who isn't involved will often try to play soccer with your head. (unless of course its an organised one on one) because thats what tends to happen when drink is involved.
The ground is the last place you want to be.
As i've said before. BJJ is a fantastic art and i respect it hugely. Its great in the octagon but on a cold saturday night outside a burger joint with piss and broken glass on the floor it will be found wanting. Judo however will be your best friend. It has the throws to slam if your primary tools (striking) fail and if it does go to the ground we practice enough newaza (groundfighting) to nullify 99% of fools (unless you are unlucky enough to come up against a BJJ player). So many underestimate Judo newaza, its pretty explosve. No waiting in guard.
To be able to defend yourself properly you need a primary toolset and a secondary backup toolset should your primary fail.
Striking is primary but if your pre empt fails and the striking goes to ratshit and it ends in a clich or in clinching range. You want to get the F*** out of there and quick before it goes to the deck. Then you are in another whole world of S***.
I use boxing/combatives for striking and i've been a judoka for years, it just happens to be a fantastic support system and is porbably the best self defence art going (as a stand alone art.......then again i am slightly biased ;D ;D )
Thats why i asked at the beiginning what he wants to get out of it.

Re: In Your Opinions What Is The Best Martial Arts To Learn For A Beginner ??
I agree with almost all of that. Being a former amatuer boxer, and being only semi-well versed in jiu jitsu, i would prefer to keep it off the ground. I realize the dangers of a guy's buddies doing the Mexican hat dance on my head if I go down. However I think the jiu jitsu is superior IF the fight goes there. You'll notice I mentioned judo and sambo as being excellent for throws. I just think that if he's new to the boxing/ma game, and he's already taking boxing, he'd probably be best served by striking at this point as opposed to executing judo throws which I can say from experience are a LOT more technical than they look. CC for being a judo advocate though.

Re: In Your Opinions What Is The Best Martial Arts To Learn For A Beginner ??
boxing on its own, 9 times out of 10, will make you a formidable opponent in any bar, all other things being roughly equal. A regular joe wouldn't even be able to touch you, while you pick your shots and pop away at his face...that's how improved you'll be with the ol' fistacuffs. Beyond that I'd add judo or wrestling which gives you the leverage skills in the clinch.

I know this sounds like rooting for the home team,as it were, but I would recomend Ed Parker Ken-Po
The system was designed with the idea in mind, that even though a perfect roundhouse is a nice goal, the mugger down the block needs to be defended against today.
So it starts of mainly with very hard Ken Po strikes, common sense situations, and a couple of things that are flat out dirty ;D,but as you become more of a martial artist, and gain greater control over your body it moves in to kung fu,with the theory that a true martial artist shouldnt have to rip the head off of every cheap thug they may be in a confrontation with, and should be able to exude more personal control

Re: In Your Opinions What Is The Best Martial Arts To Learn For A Beginner ??
I've always felt that a mix if Muay Thai and Judo would best serve for self defense. The US Army did a comprehensive study several years ago on every martial art and self defense system. The verdict was that Sambo was the best overall system, but that it took quite a bit of time to master it.

Re: In Your Opinions What Is The Best Martial Arts To Learn For A Beginner ??
basically just the russian version of BJJ, isn't it?
-
Re: In Your Opinions What Is The Best Martial Arts To Learn For A Beginner ??
It is a complete fighting system...SAMBO is a russian acronym for essentially self defense or something...I dont know how much time they spend on striking and in what facets but its is supposed to cover all parts. I've seen sambo tourneys with striking and I've seen some that were just grappling. I think they differentiate it some how between Combat and Sport Sambo

Re: In Your Opinions What Is The Best Martial Arts To Learn For A Beginner ??
Jui Jitsu or wrestling. Some type of ground/submission fighting
