Big George not so big...?
Back in his prime foreman was beast, to the 70's HW fighters. i dont think he ever faced anybody bigger than him tho.
i was wondering if he would be strong enough or big enough at just 6'3 and weighin in at 220 max?
i dont think he has ever fought anyone much taller than him, what would be the outcome if he fought a fighter like wlad, surely he cant fight the same way against wlad like he did against chuvalo or frazier?
btw i know foreman is a total beast, unhuman punching power and all that but he im not sure how he would fight the much taller and heavier HW of today. the guys today are alot taller and fatter.
still i cant picture a man like george foreman fight a guy like wlad or say, lennox lewis.

Re: Big George not so big...?
Well we can't really figure how he'd attack Wlad or Vitali now because he didn't have to think like that...he was the Wlad Klitschko of his day, the biggest hardest hitting bastard of the bunch!
Foreman would ALWAYS be good he was too effective with his punches and too mean not to be....besides he damn near beat a PRIME Shannon Briggs who's waaaaaay bigger than Wlad now
-
Re: Big George not so big...?
wlad is bigger in height, thast what would trouble foreman imo

Foreman got robbed in Briggs fight.

Wlad's dominant jab would trouble George more so than the height....George was good at going to the body it would mean if Wlad was just taller and didn't have a good jab A: George could get to the body and B: there would be a bigger body area to attack .
Wlad's offense would have helped him vs Foreman but I don't think enough to beat a Prime George Foreman....he was a freak of nature!
-
Re: Big George not so big...?
thanks for the feedback lyle!
yeah i totally agree, the man was simply a freak of nature back in his prime. foreman did say that the only man to stop him dead in his tracks with punches was sonny liston whilst sparring, also he couldnt make liston take a backward step. i think this says something also about liston.
-
Re: Big George not so big...?
For once Foreman just couldn't come in and overpower his opponent, he would have to work his way in with a jab and that is where Wladimir has the advantage.Wladimir has a very strong jab that is acurate something George was lacking. It would be an interesting fight with a wide swinging Foreman vs a straight punching Wladimir. And remember how Foreman was rocked in the first round by Ron Lyle, if he could hurt George sure as anything Wladimir could and follow up with acurate shots as well.

Re: Big George not so big...?
I was thinking that i don't believe we ever saw the best of big George apart from the Frazier and Norton fights.
Why there was no rematch with Ali is still a mystery??? Foreman fought on for 3 more years!
George would have handled the big guys of today allright as they wouldn't be to hard to hit.

Yes but George wasn't the most elusive heavyweight around either, he could just as easily be caught with a huge shot at deliver one.

Foreman got robbed in Briggs fight.
yea, but got a gift in the Alex Schultz fight. i think it was the Schult fight, pretty sure it was Alex.

Re: Big George not so big...?
Well.. I suppose thats why he is big george..Theres not all that many guys who are bigger then him..
Its interesting to consider how he would do against a tall guy, But its not all that matters imo considering he always fought a good crowd of fighters

Yeh but Foreman was about 35 pounds bigger than Briggs in that fight ;)
-
Re: Big George not so big...?
If a prime Foreman could get through a taller guys jab and get inside to work the body often enough he would stop the opponent late. IMO thats the only way he could beat a taller guy. He couldnt just swamp a taller guy with big bombs because he would just be jabbed continously.

Re: Big George not so big...?
Big George was a mean and intimidating hard sumbitch that could KO an elephant... Thats something that Wlad isint... Wlad is very soft in terms of toughness. George would clean him up no doubt.. Even Old George was a freak his chin was concrete and so was is mental resolve, heart and determination.. George would just Bully Klitschko and intimidate him
-
Re: Big George not so big...?
Prime George Foreman would have crushed both Klitschkos. Wladimirs chin wouldn't have stood up to Georges punches. Klitschko is vastly overated.

Yeah and he was about 20 years older than Shannon too.
George could take punishment like no other great heavyweight I have seen. Ali took some but he still moved and got out of the way, George just took it....Frazier took punishment too but not as good as George.
Wlad and Vitali with their size and punching accuracy would have been trouble for a lot of heavyweights from the past but if they were unable to keep their distance George would have destroyed them.
I think Prime Foreman would beat pretty much anyone today EASILY....Foreman would roll through Sam Peter like he was a nobody, Foreman would demolish Valuev, George could only have some trouble with the Klitschko's because of their size, power, and punching accuracy

Wlad would be koed im sure of it Wlad would be made to work hard those early rounds and if he survives early rounds Wlad will still be suspect to stamina problems he had in the past i just don't see Wlad koing George or survive the win decision George by Early ko or middle rounds ko.

Also keeping in mind,go back and look at the early George,he has REALLY long arms, part of what made him such a freak of nature
Why I say early George,is it isnt as noticable with comeback George because of that big thick torso
Also keep in mind 6'5" Lou Saverese's reach is only 80

Re: Big George not so big...?
It rare but, I feel that George was a better fighter the second go. more relaxed, the punches came off smoother. The night Foreman fought Cooney he was on , I would favor Big George over the Wladimer this night.
The earlier version of Forman was too tense , would have had a harder time taking the big shots from a Wladimer.. Wlad has a fast accurate right hand , heavy on the mustard.

It depends on the fight for the early George, against Paez,or Roman,he just snapped off that big long jab and came in off it with crushing intent. He had the right game plan with Frazier, catch him in that weave with a cross. Unfortunatly for Joe,and his title, his style was tailor made for Foreman

I always thought Joe looked a little chuncky in his matches with Foreman.? . Joe's best weight was a bout 200-205.

Quoted for truth, Foreman CLEARLY won that fight. Total robbery.

Unfortunatly for Joe,he was more or less built to make George look good
He had to weave to get in,all George had to do was jab him off until he could just load up on that cross. And coming from that height, and distance,Joe probably didnt even see the train that ran him over.
When Ali beat George he stayed tall and leaned back, take and block the big mans punches at full extension.Joe just didnt have that option.

Agreed i had Foreman winning by 2 rounds and you would think that it would be easier for legend like Foreman to win a decision that was clearly his but sometimes you never know in boxing heres little something i found.
New Jersey State Athletic Control Board commissioner Larry Hazzard acknowledged the widespread criticism of the decision in this bout in a 1998 interview, and, referring to his selection of judges, admitted that he "would've done it differently" if he had the opportunity to make the selection again. He explained that he had wanted to give the relatively inexperienced judges Larry Layton and Calvin Claxton "some exposure" by assigning them to work a high-profile fight, but said: "If I had it to do over again, forget it. I'd just wait [to give them exposure]....I guess it was one of those fights most people thought Foreman would win, and a fight most people didn't think would be that difficult to score. And heavyweights are easier to score. This ain't gonna be a big deal. Boy, was it a big deal! Everyone thought Foreman had won. "

I keep saying, it's not the height that matters but the good JAB!
Remember this post?

Sonny Liston had a great jab
I think Wlad at this point could last a few rounds with a Prime George Foreman....don't know if he'd win or anything but I think he'd do well

I think Foreman punchers harder than Vlad and he is shorter. Foreman was a strong man with alot of muscle. But you are right in that he had an advantage over most guys then, and his size was bigger than most heavyweights. But still George would not look small against Vlad and I think he stops him in 4.

Big George might have got Wlad, too bad we can only speculate ,Vitali would have been a big problem for George more so than Jimmy Young.

That's what I would think 81 inches? Williams the welterweight has an 82 inch reach. Hearns had a 78 inch reach.

Re: Big George not so big...?
A freak of nature? I totally agree! ;) He was fighting, winning or at least giving his opponents a difficult time in his 40's!!! Not just ordinary opponents mind you (Briggs, Holyfield, Morrison).
At the same time he was building his business empire.
And look at him now. He speaks with a clear mind. That could be a testament to his defense. With over 70 fights he probably got rocked a couple of times only.
He would have bullied Vlad in his prime and would have given Vlad a difficult time in his 40s.
-
Re: Big George not so big...?
I don't think he'd give him trouble in his 40's....he never tried or WANTED to fight Lewis or Bowe and I assume you could lump Wlad and Vitali in with them, those guys were dangerous!!!!!
Briggs was scared of George which is why he fought him
But in his Prime....i think George Foreman is the SCARIEST fighter ever in the history of the sport!
