Toney suspended for Steroids?!
Toney suspended for steroids!
The California State Athletic Commission has levied a one year suspension on former world champion James "Lights Out" Toney. Toney tested positive for both Boldenone Metabolite and Stanozolol Metabolite after his May 24 fight against Danny Barchelder at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. Toney has been fined $2,500 and his suspension period runs from the conclusion of the bout until the end of his licensing year which is May 22, 2008. He will be close to 40 when he is eligible to return to the ring. Interestingly, Boldenone is an anabolic steroid developed primarily for horses and is only available through veterinary clinics. Stanozolol is the same steroid that boxer Fernando Vargas was suspended nine months for in 2002 by the Nevada Commission. This is Toney's second suspension for steroid use. After dethroning John Ruiz in 2005, Toney was suspended by the New York Commission and stripped of the WBA heavyweight title after testing positive for the anabolic steroid nandrolone.
Toney's May 24 opponent Danny Batchelder also tested positive with the steroids Oxandrolone, Stanozolol Metabolite, and an elevated T/E Ratio. Like Toney, he also been fined $2,500 and suspended through the end of his licensing year which is May 22, 2008.

Is he really the main man? Its been a long time since Toney was even winning fights? :-\
But yes he should retire. He can achieve little more than what has already been done.
What an awful ending though?! :(

Re: James Toney
I think a lot of us like toney and were dissappointed at this news...but after his last performance and with this news i sadly think it's time for him to go away...

You may be right.
I still want to hear something from Toney though. He should say something.

Re: James Toney
This s**t! has to stop I don't know about the rest of you BUT me I hate cheaters and finining Toney JUST $2,500 dlls. is s**t. I think the fine should be raised and so should the suspension.
f*ck this 1st time offender, 2nd time offender levels of punishment s**t... They do it once make the punishment so that they don't make it to level 2.
Test positive once.
$ 1million dollar fine, with a infinte suspension. that'll solve that problem.....
Any person/fighter who needs to do s**t like this to try and have an advantage over and opponent is s**t! and for that reason only I despise fighters that do that....
I thing is to be a suspect of using them I know people say RJJ and Evander both used them BUT show me the report/test item thats states they tested positive in a test.

Wonder where i have heard this before :-\

Re: Toney suspended for Steroids?!
You have got to be s**ting me. Toney gets fined $2,500???? That is really going to eat into his beer + burger fund. Colour me unsurprised, and personally I don't see Toney ever standing in a ring again, unless he becomes a trainer. And who'd respect him as a trainer....a middleweight that ended up as a heavy. Mad career, and an inominious end.

Re: Toney suspended for Steroids?!
I saw this on espn.com earlier today. And here i was already to give my "well atleast boxers don't juice like baseball players" speech.......... >:mad

Re: Toney suspended for Steroids?!
Second time he has been done with this - wonder how many of the fights he 'won' were under legal conditions too... to me it throws most of his wins and his legecy into serious jeperdy
-
Re: Toney suspended for Steroids?!
I would think he would have stayed away from steroids after he lost his title. What a dumb move. He has to know what he is doing. By the way. I read in the newspaper that Toney was stripped of his heavyweight title. Is he recognized as being a former champ or is it like he never was champion? how does that work? Are he and Jones the only middleweights to be heavyweight champ or is it only Jones. curious how that works. He should not be recognized at all.

Re: Toney suspended for Steroids?!
You people seem to forget (not making excuses because this is unexcusable) that after the second peter fight toney was diagnosed with a pituatary disorder from blows to the head and the only treatment would be steroids to a certain degree. I'm not sure if those are the ones the doctors said he would need but i'm still sure that these ones are for the pituatary thing and the ones before were for an arm injury. If they busted athletes that were higher profile than toney, they would've busted him earlier if he tested positive as well.
-
Re: Toney suspended for Steroids?!
the end of his career is shady but dont let that take away from what it was preheavyweight.

Re: Toney suspended for Steroids?!
Toney needs to retire anyway. He was a great fighter, but he's at the end of the road. Hopefully this suspension will make the retirement decision for him.

Re: Toney suspended for Steroids?!
Fwock!
Damnit james.. I hate to say it but his career is probably over..
I fear his only hope of late has been to make cruiser and go all out.. But after a long suspension and with his age i fear he may be unable to top off his career..
I hope he is remembered for what a great fighter he is and was instead of steriod use and lack of discipline to make weight..
Mixed feelings right now..

Toney handed steroids suspension

Unless he wins an appeal here I dont suppose we'll hear much more from Toney now.

Re: Toney suspended for Steroids?!
He's only been banned to fight in Calafornia right?
To be honest as far as affecting Toney's career it won't make any difference. The guy is the new milleniums Roberto Duran and will keep fighting until he has a car crash or some other injury that finally finishes him off for good.
Toney lives to fight. If the entire USA banned him he'd probably go fight in Columbia or Mexico.
This won't be the last we see of him in the ring.

Re: Toney suspended for Steroids?!
He should have just stayed down in weight,he never had the hand size, and trying to get the bulk allways screwed him up,not to mention his eating habits
-
Re: Toney suspended for Steroids?!
A second time... come on James whats with you?
By the time the suspension is up he'll be nearing 40. Best to leave the game now I say!
-
Re: Toney suspended for Steroids?!
2 times is not good for Toney.. This hurts his career.. not prior heavyweight but why would he cheat like this and think he would get away with it. He should not get another title shot. I think he is a great champ but he should not be cheating.
-
Re: Toney suspended for Steroids?!
I never liked james toney but i always respected him....Not anymore tho.

Re: Toney suspended for Steroids?!
This is really depressing for me being that James Toney is one of my favorite fighters. I hate to say this but I really do believe its time for him to hang the gloves up. But the way James is I'm sure he will come back once the suspension is up. I wonder what Freddie Roach thinks of all this and if James does fight again after the suspension I wonder if he will even train him. Anyone know if Roach has commented on this yet?

Toney has remained silent which is an unusual state of affairs for him and that does indicate perhaps in itself a certain admission of guilt.
This is a terrible blow to boxing and a serious punch in the groin to the image and legacy of James Toney.
Its also a huge dissapointment to me. Toney has been one of my favourite fighters for a long time now and to have this come up at this stage in his career is a huge downer. Toney has had a long career with many highs but of course his recent career has been blighted by lows.
The win over Jirov was awesome. Then to beat Holyfield as he stepped up to heavyweight, it all seemed so promising. Then of course the tarnished "win" over Ruiz. I gave Toney the benefit of the doubt and hoped he would get back into the ring quickly. But he didnt quite step it up how I thought he should have and could have. The waistline got bigger and bigger. Then the awful "draw" against the champion journeyman Rahman. Still, I believed that if Toney could lose some weight he could win a belt. I thought Toney beat Peter first time out, but he had to take blows like never before. The second fight was a clear loss and Toney was lacking. Still, after a long break Toney was back and again I believed that he could make a difference with a fitness plan and a few quick warm ups. We got a shoddy SD against a journeyman and then he tests positive for 2 banned substances!!
My faith has all but flickered out. How stupid. To have been caught the first time why would he be so stupid as to take any risks again? It doesnt make any sense to me. What was he hoping to achieve by this? What benefits was he reaching for exactly?

The amazing part is that both fighters tested positive

Re: Toney suspended for Steroids?!
See this is an opportunity for all those promoters out there....They should have fought off Toney and the opponent with the steroids.
And instead of Going like...trained by Freddie roach, they could go...trained by anabolic steroids inc....
And then we could have competition between the various types of performance enhancing drugs and see which is superior. They could call it boxing+ or somethin like that.
Uh...sorry dunno wher that came outta, its those damn pills my trainer bin slippin me.

Good point! Cc
The proof of that is in his last fight.. It wasnt televised.. He doesnt even really have the urge to have his fights on tv..
Hes just still fighting
