Wednesday Night Fights: Edner Cherry - Wes Ferguson

Alright so tonight marks the return of one of my favorite fighters in all of boxing. Edner Cherry. Coming off a bad style matchup and decision loss versus Paulie Malignaggi and a very exciting and controversial bout with Jose Santa Cruz before that, I think Cherry is going to make a big time statement here tonight.

Unless his opponent is better in the ring then he is on paper. That could be true. He's trained by Roger Mayweather. Not sure what that means but certainly worth mentioning.

Cherry is an active fighter, always letting punches go and always coming forward, they call him "Cherry Bomb" and I think it's one of the few nicknames that actually says something about the boxer. He is exactly that, a bomb. A very explosive and unrelenting fighter. Always makes for an entertaining bout in win or loss. I expect no less tonight.

Unfortunately, the undercard looks weak. Not one guy on paper you would want to look out for, no undefeated prospects or anything of that sort. Hopefully the matchmaking is good though and we get some entertaining fights.

Should be fun, glad to see Cherry again and coming off that AWESOME card on Friday in Canada before another big one in 2 days in Canada, hope to see a nice little filler.

As for tonight's fight, Montano actually looked good. He leaned forward a bit to much, didn't have a lot of bend in his knees and held his arms wide but I thought he did good. Nice combos, reminded me a bit of Julio Gonzalez. Had no idea he beat Americao Santos. Did they say he was being trained by Syd Vanderpool? I could have sworn I heard that but I was on the phone at the same time.

He is like the "energy" rabbit, he takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

My bad, Teddy. I thought the "Energizer" rabbit kept on "going and going and going."

I like Cherry but his balance is terrible. Hopefully hes improved on that. He should beat Ferguson though.

I expected a lot more from Ferguson. BOX!

I had the fight 96-94 for Cherry.

I thought for the first few rounds that it was going to be a complete washout, but I thought Ferguson got it together and performed admirably.

Couple things though. He was real flatfooted on the outside and was lunging with punches, when he moved his feet more he was more successful. A lot of young fighters who employ that shoulder roll have that same problem. You have to move your feet and bend your knees, you can't just stay flatfooted.

Another thing, he would move outside then lunge in with that right. I would rather have him either keep the jab and stay outside or catch Cherry as he moved inside with the left hook. He had his best round in the 4th and that is what he was doing.

Still, despite all the things I thought he could have done better, he did good. A lot of heart in that guy and I think the commentators sold him short. Cherry did a good job of stealing rounds late, but I thought in the later rounds up until 9 and 10 when he was for the most part gassed, Ferguson was effective.

Very good fight as is the norm from Cherry. Also want to see more from Ferguson, no reason for his head to hang as he is only 21.

I wish more fighters would have high socks, the red get up is sick. Cherry and Lacy never disappoint with their fight attire.
