Body punchers....Heavyweights
Who were THE BEST bodypunchers in this division of all time.
Joe Frazier - not so much the left hook to the body but the right cross
George Foreman - RIGHT HOOK.....God he threw it from 3 states away!!!
Mike Tyson - either hand could do HUGE damage to his opponent
Re: Body punchers....Heavyweights
I think you listed em all can't think man.
Re: Body punchers....Heavyweights
I wouldn't put foreman at the top
Frazier, Tyson for sure, and though I don't like Rocky Marciano he could go to the body effectively.
Re: Body punchers....Heavyweights
Well the reason I posted the topic is because it's so difficult for body punchers to work and not get tagged in return and of course with heavyweights they NEVER want to take punishment which makes these guys IMO the best body punchers....they have to punch and in return get heavyweight counter shots (sometimes).
Rocky could dig to the body....hell anywhere he threw a punch I am sure it hurt the guy.
Evander Holyfield would work the body, sometimes harder than others.
What got me thinking about this was the Cotto fight....I have never seen someone work the body like that in the heavier divisions...barring of course Mike McCallum

Re: Body punchers....Heavyweights
I'd vote Tyson.
Plus every body shot always came with a free uppercut.

Yah he was very generous back in the day
Re: Body punchers....Heavyweights
Rocky's body punching was a key part of his game even his work up top. He scored many KO's with that "phantom" right of his which was essentially effective because of the respect his opponents had for his power to the body.
Re: Body punchers....Heavyweights
A terrific body puncher for a Heavy who gets overlooked was Patterson
Re: Body punchers....Heavyweights
Tommy Morrison-Was really effective to the body although i don't rate him as great in any way
Lennox- an underrated body puncher
Tefelio stevenson :)
Re: Body punchers....Heavyweights
Andrew Golota was a devestating body puncher. A low blow is considered a body shot, right?

Good one, Sweet. ;D
Re: Body punchers....Heavyweights
yes andrew golota brought a new meaning to hitting the middle wicket :)
Re: Body punchers....Heavyweights
Riddick Bowe worked the body well against Holyfield in their first meeting, Evander would try and take a rest by leaning on him, but Bowe could get enough room to punish him to the body. Haven't seen enough of his other fights to see if this was something he did a lot though.

got to Holy before i could so you get the cc ;), he would throw the hook down and then up, and it was very effective against a lot of the top heavyweights
Re: Body punchers....Heavyweights
1) Tyson - Clearly had one punch knockout power to the body. His body attacked generated as much fear as his knockout power.
2) Marciano - Ground down opponents to the body and took their heart
3) Joe louis - Amazing work to the body, in his prime just punished his opponents both downstairs and upstairs.
4) Frazier - Just ask Ali - Joe always committed to the body to set up the hook to the head.
5) Bob Fitzsimmons - Concentrated and was the first to really understand how to take an opponent out with a body attack.
6) George Chuvalo - Brutal Body puncher that set up virtually all of his KO's
7) Tua - somewhere between the styles of Tyson and Marciano always felt he should have commit more to the body.
8) Jerry Quarry - A complete inside fighter that had many personal demons and fought in the golden era...but his body attack was well respected.
9) Jack Dempsey - He hit everything that he was able to hit, truly an equal opportunity punisher...
10) Tommy Morrison - Always incorporated a nice body attack and he had excellent power to the body as well.
Honorable mention to George Foreman...While he probably could hit harder than anyone on the list to the body he never really focused a body attack as a defining part of his style...
Re: Body punchers....Heavyweights
Well Big George had that unreal reach,so committing to inside work would be counterproductive really

Watch his highlight vs Chuvalo he got him against the ropes and it was right hook to the body all day long

The entire 5 1/2 minute clip should George throwing 3 body punches all against one fighter (Chuvalo)...this is hardly an argument that big George was an effective body puncher!

Lyle, you know I respect your opinion a great deal but we have to disagree on this one...LOVE the Foreman-Peralta fight but there is only one round in that clip that George even goes to the body...I will agree that Big George hit awfully hard to the body but he hit very hard everywhere he threw...Why I don't consider Foreman one of the best body punchers is because it was never a concentrated part of his arsenal, body punching was just an after thought when someone laid against the ropes for Big George...
