Kelly Pavlik's next fight,his last at 160...
“I would definitely move up to 168. It's getting too hard to make the weight (at middleweight) as it is. I want to win my world title at middleweight. It’s something I put a long time into. Almost all my time in boxing,” Pavlik said. “Once we win that world title, we'll move up to 168 and take care of business up there.”
When asked about possible encounters with Bernard Hopkins and Winky Wight, who collide in a July pay-per-view at a catch-weight of 170-pounds, Pavlik seemed to only be interested in fighting them if a challenge was thrown his way.
“There is always good if you can beat a guy like Bernard Hopkins or a Winky Wright. But then you sit there and turn around and people say 'what are you fighting these guys for, they ain't the same fighters anymore.’ Unless they throw a challenge out there, I'll take it. Other than that, I'll take care of the champions first right in front of me. After I take care of that, if these guys want to challenge (I'll fight), but right now that's kind of out of the question,” Pavlik said.
Who would you like to see him fight? If he carries his power, his style would be a nightmare for most of the guys there!

Re: Kelly Pavlik's next fight, his last at 160...
Think Calzaghe would take this guy 2 the cleaners..

I think you mean... After the fight Joe will be taking Kelly's clothes to the cleaners ;D
Doubt it... The kid has a dynamite right and throws straight crisp punches, Pavlik has a concrete beard and is very determined... Calzaghe would have to commit more to his punches to back this guy off and he would break his twigs in the process......  Pavlik is a 1 punch concussive hitter, sooner or later he will land

Agreed Calzaghe's punches are like what my girl would do slapping punches Calzaghe looks for volume now and doesn't commit and i reckon he would break his hands vs Pavlik and Pavlik would probably stop Calzaghe now let the Calzaghe fans give me good telling off.

Re: Kelly Pavlik's next fight, his last at 160...
not got the technical skill to take on calzaghe, he'd be lucky to win 3 rounds against JC
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik's next fight, his last at 160...
Im sorry but beating a very limited yet strong Edison Miranda does nothing to suggest that he would stand a chance with Calzaghe.

You're sorta right, Calzaghe would go 3 rounds and then the ref would call it TKO
after Calzaghe lands an inneffective flurry.

Re: Kelly Pavlik's next fight, his last at 160...
so he had 1 close fight in 43??? everyone has an off nite, i think you'll agree

I think its a matter of how much this kid imposes his will and can back you up.... Some might bring up Lacy as being strong and he is, but he dosent throw straight helacious power shots like Pavlik does.
As I stated earlier, Calzaghe would be fighting on his back foot and would have to commit more to his punches and he cant anymore....

Its because Calzaghe hasn't fought anyone really of any threat to him.

Re: Kelly Pavlik's next fight, his last at 160...
what every fighter in his division for ten years is not a threat. not his fault he has been a class above the rest for a decade

Well he still hasn't fought anyone great not one and if its due to them ducking him or Calzaghe ducking them or division has been weak doesn't matter still the same

Re: Kelly Pavlik's next fight, his last at 160...
ok so when Taylor beats him he'll say its because of the weight now right?

I HIGHLY doubt Pavlik is going to use excuses,he doesn't come across as that type of character.
As for Kelly JC,why would Kelly do any better than Lacy? I'm not saying thats how the fight would go but just a question. How many punches did JC land on Jeff and he didn't break his hands?>/
And how about Pavlik v some of the other guys at 168? I'd LOVE TO SEE PAVLIK V Librado Andrade for a bloody war!!!!

Re: Kelly Pavlik's next fight, his last at 160...
Difference was Manfredo was a small fight, maybe he did not take care of his hands as well as he did for the Lacy fight and you miss the point,it's not a given that he will break his hands. He may do,he may not. I understand people berating Joe for his resume but not for his skill.
Skilled, boxer southpaws who throw over 600 punches a fight are stylistic nightmares for anyone. Let's see how Pavlik does v a boxer first before we say he could maul Calzaghe. Alot of people were making the same mistake with Lacy-JC.
However,I really like Pavlik so first I want to see him beat JT! And don't misunderstand,I'd be rooting for neither him nor JC,all I am saying is,dont' dismiss JC so easily.

First & foremost...I like Pavlik...but that statement shows that he's either retarded...or full of shit! ;D
Hopkins & Wright are legends & both are fighting at or above their standard capacity.
Hopkins just moved up & handed the best fighter (like Tarver or not) that there was at 175lbs.
Wright drew/defeated Taylor & everyone else that was put in front of him & Pavlik has the nerve to say that there is no reason to fight him?
STFU!
Anywho...it's a real disappointment that Pavlik thinks this way...moving up to 168 that is. There's going to be no one there when he goes other than Mundane & Kessler & I would give both a shot @ beating Pavlik.
Pavlik should stay @ 160lbs & do what he needs to do. THere are plenty of challenges there & great fights to be made.

On more than one ocasion when calzaghe got in the ring he was getting in the ring with a guy who could KO him, was the next big thing, im not just talking about lacy, veik shiek, there were quite a few guys who were supposed to be real good fighters, or the second coming of some other great, its just the manner in which calzaghe handled them all that they become nothing ness.
I'm curious ice, i know your quit young, but how much of Calzaghes career have you followed? i know your seen most/all of his fights, but thats not following a career, you can't tell anything about the hype or thoughts of the guys who were getting in the ring with him by watching downloads or some dvd mate...
You talk alot about the reid fight as well, about how it was close how he got caught by the right.. you do know that was a very very young champion? he wa slike 24ish? you expected him to be the complete package then or sumin?

Re: Kelly Pavlik's next fight, his last at 160...
I would love to see Pavlik take on Kessler!!!!
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik's next fight, his last at 160...
Pavlik - Kessler would be absolutely dynamite. They are almost the same fighter with a few differences but very similar nonetheless. I don't like Pavlik's chances against Calzaghe. I don't like his chances at 168, I would much rather him stay at 160.

Right Preme i'll give you my two cents on this what you said some of it is true but after the Calzaghe fights Sheika and Veit proved they wern't top level and they never have been really to be honest i have followed him for a while as for the Reid fight he was the complete package then but i think he broke his hand didn't he ?? and Reid made it tough and i mean very tough i have noticed Calzaghe gets caught with the right hands and i also noticed in his earlier career he used be alot more of a powerful puncher and i don't think he has koed anyone in ages Calzaghe has good skills i don't think anyone denys that not even Calzaghe haters i Don't think its all his fault big fights never happened but Calzaghe wasn't exactly trying to get big fights either but i also think Calzaghe has been unlucky he hasn't had the competition of Benn Eubank Watsn Collins Jones ect with Calzaghes talent he should of got alot further in his career by now i feel sorry for us boxing fans that a talented guy like Calzaghe hasn't fought the elite.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik's next fight, his last at 160...
Personally...I'd rather see Pavlik fight Taylor, Sturm, Abraham, or Wright.
Pavlik won't be able to dictate pace against someone of Wright's skill level though & I honestly believe that the best fight out there would be one against either Taylor or Abraham as far as excitement goes.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik's next fight, his last at 160...
Calzaghe was due to fight collins but he had to retire, he then fought and beat Eubank well. from then on he has taken on every challenge in SMW division, all fighters who stepped up to the mantle but got knocked back down by Calzaghe.
I do know that offers have been made to Hopkins, which were turned down same with Taylor, could maybe blame warren that theywere turned down but not really Joe. The guy is skill wise, top 3 fighters in the world IMO

you said going into fights tho - and there were about 5 or 6 fights calzaghe went into where the other guy was considerd to be pretty dangerous, or coming from some good hype...
no way was calzaghe at 24 the complete package when he fought reid lol, yeah he fought half the fight with a broken hand - but he has imrpoved vastly since then...
Ice, there were only 2 other fights out there Joe could of really fought and gotten credit for, Hopkins and RJJ, and there was nothing more he could of done than he already did to try and get them in the ring.
Pavilks stands almost no chance in the ring with calzaghe, he is so so slow even with a bust hand i would pick calzaghe to out point pavilk, he is easy as hell to hit and his speed is so bad he would barly lay a glove on calzaghe or kessler for that matter. Pavilk is an averge boxer who can pack a punch.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik's next fight, his last at 160...
i think he can beat kessler
calzaghe uhh. uhh.
will it be to hard for him to be at 175

So a year and a half ago I bet you said McCart would beat Pavlik. To beat Taylor all Pavlik needs is one round to hurt him then the rest will be history.

They both would land they both posses about the same power. It would be a chin contest.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik's next fight, his last at 160...
pavlik at the moment would not stand a chance against calzaghe. calzaghe would outbox him to death.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik's next fight, his last at 160...
First, all of you are missing the point that with age it is getting TO HARD for Pavlik to make weight... i would like for him to stay at 160 also but if he cant, he cant.. i know he can do it the hopkins way but its unhealthy to stay at that weight year after year..
second, Calzaghe didnt break his hand after the manfredo fight he hurt it, there is a difference
third, i'm getting tired of everyone that wants to act like they know calzaghe to say he slaps.. yes some of his combos that are meant for scoring are little more than slaps but to say thats the extent of his power is just plain bias or dumb.. look at lacy's face for god sake 5000 slaps wouldnt do that to him... And I'm not saying that he hits you with a ton of bricks but he is far from a malignaggi type power like you all imply
next Pavlik is the biggest enigma i have seen in boxing for years..
his power, his underrated chin (he wont be knocked down for years), nobody knows just how good he can be if he keeps improving head movement, etc., he is better at defence than what it appears, he just doest have good defence technique, he purposely uses offence for defence very well..
pavlik-taylor: Pavlik has beat zertuche and miranda; taylor has beat b-hop twice and drew with winky when they were top p4p fighters
that being said to favor pavlik over taylor would be hard..
like i said pavlik is an enigma to me against calzaghe it would be hard to favor pavlik over a proven p4per
But i do know that a kessler-pavlik match would be out right war probably the most bloody, throw back fight that could be made... even more so that cotto-margo cause pavlik-kess has better chins
I know i'm a new poster and i completely respect the posters on here.. most of whom know more about boxing than me.. I hope i didnt step on to many toes...

Yes he did break them in Manfredo fight and its just figure of speech when i say he slaps i know his fighting style and he does slap alot he doesn't get full power into his punches and you would be surprised what 5000 hard slaps would do ;D
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik's next fight, his last at 160...
calzaghe did not break his hand as they reported right after the fight.. I've read on a couple of sites that it was bruised not broke when he hit manfredo's sholder... note: he wants to fight in sept. not nov.
and in the manfredo fight he "slapped" i know exactly what u are talking about but those are "scoring slaps" much like jabs arent suppose to knock u out but just to score and to set up straight right and left hooks (opposite for right jabs)
he DOES have more in his arsenal than "slaps" though its not just you ICE but i've heard that a thousand times "especially after the manfredo fight, which was probably seen by more calzaghe haters than any other fight" about how calzaghe slaps and that would never work against winky, b-hop, j.t.. anyone that says that needs to simply watch more fights of joe because for every slap he throws and i'm talikng about his 10 YEAR REIGN HE ALSO SLAPS TH F**K OUT OF SOMEBODY
sorry the whole joe slapping is a pet pieve of mine
i dont like it when great boxers has a one word stigma attached to them that denagrates their abilities when it is manufactured by the haters.. its disrepectful to boxing as a whole and the intellgence of the boxer's fans
maybe i'm going a little overboard :-X

Im not Calzaghe hater i just say it as i see it and he hardly landed clean punch on Manfredo yet he done that much damage to his hands Calzaghe has slapped the S*** out of people i'll give you that but against who exactly ?? and i've watched most of Calzaghes fights and he used to have alot more power now his fists are like feathers he is a great skilled boxer but he isn't a great what i mean by that is that he has got the skills of a great but his place at moment isn't a great in my opinion if he beats Kessler he will get my respect but we will wait and see.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik's next fight, his last at 160...
Calzaghe hurt his hand hitting his sholder hitting a sholder, elbow, or hip could break ANYONES hand..
he slapped the s**t out of Lacy, veit, mger, mitchell, sheika, and eubanks thats just the title fights he has been in and again i'm not saying that he hits like a mule but he does have some pop left in his power punches
ICE: i know u know boxing and ur not a JC hater but alot of others that dont know sh*t about boxing or JC, say joe slaps like they really know something
I'm not the biggest calzaghe fan, i think kessler has a 50/50 to beat him, but being that he is undefeated, has 20 defences, and a ten year reign alone should qualify you as a great, even if he loses to kessler he has had an impressive career...
