Well i do like most slick boxers Roy Jones is favorite out of the list he was exceptional fighter but also had great power so that always made him exciting to watch.
-
Re: y dont people like slick boxers
like all the fighters you mentioned as well. minus cory spinks. can't stand him for some reason.
being a slick boxer isn't the only way to be top of the p4p. pacquiao is right there at #2 and a lot of people favor him over mayweather. de la hoya was never a "slick" boxer either when he was on top.
mayweather likes to throw down and embarass an oppenent when he knows he can exploit them...
gatti, baldomir, shamba mitchell
has to be a lot more technical when fighting the likes of de la hoya, judah.
tried to throw down the 1st time he fought castillo. (which the majority thinks castillo won)... but mayweather learned his lesson, gave him the rematch and them took him to school with the science. not trying to knock pretty boy, cause that's boxing... but that's why people tend to lack a bit of respect for him. (IMO)
-
Re: y dont people like slick boxers
I like slick fighters, but they have to have balls.
-
Re: y dont people like slick boxers
Its a funny thing of how you respect or like a slick fighter..
Cos when you learn to box..
If it were as easy as saying..Right i wana be a boxer with this style or a puncher with this style then everybody would be a boxer..
But you do things how you do them as you progress and you fall into the style that is your own..
I imagine boxers take more time to adapt to that style..So thats something that has to be respected and if you are patient enough to watch a boxer and every little thing he does then you will find yourself enjoying it..
I think most people develop theyr styles based on theyr influences..
And its fair to say that the most part of peoples influences come from fighters they are fans of and enjoy watching.. Which Turns out alot of punchers
-
Re: y dont people like slick boxers
Tito you make a very good point cc
-
Re: y dont people like slick boxers
People feel as though there not risk takers and find them boring to watch.
i don't share these these feeling.
-
Re: y dont people like slick boxers
There's no such thing as a slick boxer per se. Boxers have to have numerous skills.
Slick is nice but as well as that we want to see:
Aggression
Strength
Power
Balls
Tactics
Courage
A spectacle thats gonna excite
A complete range of shots
Good footwork
Nice head and body shots
Work on inside outside back foot front foot
We also want to see the boxer out of the ring as
Standing for something we like
A decent human being who builds a fan base
The last thing I want to see is a guy running round the ring getting away from shots - I want entertaining
I think people like slick but generally combined with the other attributes. Bottom line is we want to see a hero not a coward, who entertains and inspires us not runs away - thats why I love Ricky Hatton and I hate Floyd Mayweather
-
Re: y dont people like slick boxers
I don't really know anyone that does not like any slick boxers at all. I love watching Mayweather fight and I actually enjoyed watching Paulie's fight,it was a boxing masterclass as was Spinks v JT. I also love Ivan Calderon who is as slick as they come. I wouldn't classify Shane Mosley as a slick boxer but I enjoy watching him too.
-
Re: y dont people like slick boxers
Thank you scrap cc back..
And Gamo..
I totally get your perspective..You and i are quite alike..
I mean... Paulie showed definate improvement as far as power is concerned in his last fight..He was sitting down on his punches.. Hes not really your typical boxer he uses the slickness to his own style..Notice he doesnt use too much footwork.. He steps just like any puncher.. Stands quite firm but uses movement from the waist up, turning the shoulders after hes thrown..
Imo hes like half way to bieng a counter puncher..He is not a counter puncher..But he sets up his opponents to step into his punches and fights off the back foot..
People say calderon has no power because he is slick and has a low knockout percentage..
But imo its not the case.. I mean.. When he wants to he can bang..
But only problem is when we have seen him bang he forgets to do all his other stuff and can get caught from time to time..Then the slickness is always there to go back to..
Im looking forward to Ivan moving up in weight .. Funnily enough his move up fght is on my birthday this year.. Im hoping he carries some power up with him and carries on growing as a fighter

good point. nothing worse then a fighter not mopping up an opponent for fear of getting hit. several guys of recent vintage that had the tremendous talent , could have been exciting and fan friendly, just simply lacked the stones to seize the opportunity Mayweather comes to mind.

Re: y dont people like slick boxers
I like slick boxers like Malignaggi, Guzman, Toney, Mosley, Pea and Winky because they use their defence as a weapon.
-

cause they usually make boring fiights

....isn't boxing about HITTING 1st and NOT GETTING HIT 2nd????
I like slick fighters....but I'm not wrong in wanting to see them FIGHT and not just run around like they are high on crack.

Re: y dont people like slick boxers
Roberto Duran was a great fighter defensively but no one ever mentions his skill.....perhaps because he was willing to throw down every once and a while

Well i aint gona get into an arguement over it. I just prefer the whole fast hands, in and out quickly, embarrasing the opponent style...then the whole take a punch to give one....whilst i admit fighters like that make for more entertaining bouts...is it not as much about defense and avoiding the punch as giving one! i thought thats what the whole idea of the beautiful science was about!

Re: y dont people like slick boxers
Do you think Duran was good on defense?
Something has to be said about guys who can still FIGHT but don't get the crap beaten out of them in the process

yeah Duran had a great defense, but it was a very different type of defense to say PBF's, who i would say mastered defense better. I aint saying i dislike the warriors....for example Marciano is one of my fave all time fighters, and you know as ive argued with you on him before!

Re: y dont people like slick boxers
Ok....I like defensive guys too but they aren't my favorite.

Re: y dont people like slick boxers
Well it seems like most people like slick boxers, I do.. but..
people just dont like runners...
mayweather-gatti proved to me a slick boxers could be brutal... i know gatti skill set wasnt in the same league but still yet mayweather pounded his a$$..
but then you get mayweather-DLH which anyone would rather see a forward attack-slick or a forward-forward style over the slick-slick style, which looks like a olympic fight on steriods ;D

Exactly my point, you can't win rounds without landing punches, but watching those guys slip the punches leaves you with your mouth wide open, and those guys also have a bit of a vicious streak in them, they wanna put their hands on someone. Guzman and Barrera are probably my favourite fighters to watch outside of Hatton and Cotto cos they have a pefect mix of defense and offense, and it all just gels together. The results are breathtaking.
-
Re: y dont people like slick boxers
I prefer fighter come into a fight with the intention of putting their opponent on the canvas. No, not exactly. I like fighters who that are want to land as many punches as possible. I like most of the guys you mentioned, and most of those guys do just that. Mayweather is the clear exception on that list. I like guys who come into fights looking for the KO, even if they don't have the power to get the KO. Even though Malignaggi has ZERO power, he engages and makes an exciting fight. Winky doesn't KO anybody, but I love his steady, relentless pressure combined with his defensive skill.
Many people don't agree with me on this one, but IMHO, if don't come into a fight trying to put hurting on your opponent, you aren't doing your job. For example, Floyd should have tried to stop Oscar. He dominated him, yet his fought a boring, overly defensive fight that made the outcome closer than it should have been on the cards. Had Floyd taken more chances and tried to stop Oscar instead of coasting to an easy decision, he would have won a UD by a large margin. Sure, I enjoyed his slick defense. I'm a smart, hardcore boxing fan and I appreciate that style, but to me it's lazy and a little boring. I prefer guys like Duran, Hagler, Frazier. That's why Shane Mosley is probably my favorite active boxer. He's slick and fast, but he lookes to engage. He'll take one to give three. I'm not a big fan of take 3 to give 1 guys. I love guys with defensive who still can brawl. I'd rather watch Kelly Pavlik any day over Floyd Mayweather. Pavlik could have run and pot-shoted his way to a UD over Miranda. Instead, he ate a few punches, took a few chances, and gave us all FOTY candidate.

Re: y dont people like slick boxers
Its great to see a fighter who doesnt leave the parish to avoid the punch thats skill
-
Re: y dont people like slick boxers
why does everyone think that if you're a slick boxer you're a pussy? that's ego talking...it's just a way for guys who know that they're lacking in speed and footwork to try to bait the other guy in to stopping so he can land his best punch..
reminds me of morrales-raheem when after raheem tattooed him all night morrales stated after the fight
"he wouldn't stand still and fight me, he just kept hitting me and moving away"
and my reply to that would be that what he's supposed to do...dumbass

Next time you want to talk about say hatton or hopkins or mayweather or gatti..

I might hurt your feelings again, but I don't mean to, I just need to get a point across.
I just mean.... people say they are fans... they say they love boxers like Mayweather..... but hardly any of those same guys buy tickets to their fights. Many fight fans travel over 7 hours just to see the fighters they love. And I hear a lot of people say their favorite is a defensive fighter... yet those type of fighters punch in front of empty seats all the time. I've seen Margarito, Morales, Arce, Barrera, and Pacquiao. Shook hands with Diego Corrales (I'm fortunate) and seen that jerk Larry Merchant (Unfortunate). I mean, it's a sacrifice, and I admit I haven't done it recently because I'm busy, the planning invovled, and the money, I'm not rich so I could never afford to stay in Vegas, I think I drove around 10 hours just to get there... but it's worth it to say I'm a fan and I paid the price to see them. People say they are fans to these defensive marvels, but their fans aren't as loyal as the offensive fighters. If your going to go to a fight that's going to possibly put you behind in rent, are you going to buy tickets to a defensive display of one punch action and feinting... or are you going to watch a valiant display of someone daring to be great, sacrifice his health, and who's going to work for it until he's stopped?

Re: y dont people like slick boxers
Here's my final thought on this topic HAVING A GOOD DEFENSE SHOULDN'T KEEP YOU FROM THROWING OR LANDING PUNCHES....IN FACT IT SHOULD HELP YOU LAND PUNCHES
My problem with most of the "slick boxers" is that they don't hit anyone.....EVER

CC. You are an I are completely on the same page with this. I like Dawson and Paulie M and I would consider them both 'slick" boxer and they both lack power, but they throw and land. I'm sorry, you don't win fights by winning the battle of connect percentage. You win by hitting the other guy more than he hits you and when you make him miss you should make him pay, really pay. If that means you eat a flush shot once in a while, fine, but for god sake, let your hands go.

And hell i will attend some huge fights in future..
But it'l be a while till im earning enough to get my ass to vegas and hit the strip ..lol :P
But yet i devote most of my days to boxing
But alls cool bro
