Hatton's problem...

First up - Hatton kicked some serious ass on the weekend. I watched the fight in Sydney and was very impressed with how strong and focused he looked. The man is a beast.

BUT:-

Hatton's problem is that there are NO MEANINGFUL FIGHTS FOR HIM AT 140. He kills Malignaggi, Ndou, Harris, Witter, Hopkins, Forbes and anyone else in his weight division - these fights (with the exception of the Witter fight) wouldn't bring him the money he wants anyway.

But at 147 I don't see him beating anyone. I think Cotto and Mosley would both beat him - Margarito or Williams I'm not so sure about, but after his fight with Collazo (who visibly hurt him) I would lean towards the bigger punchers/bodies in those fights.

People are talking DLH but I can't see him going south of 154 and that is definitely a bridge too far for Hatton.

I think he is in a rough spot right now, because 140 used to have some marquee names. People are saying that this fight may have opened doors for Hatton, and the performance definitley warrants that - but I don't see how.

I think he mentioned Malignaggi after the fight, so he could be going in that direction, though he's not the p4p fighter Hatton says he wants.

Mayweather is the guy he wants, and I reckon Hatton should pull out all the stops to get him, offering huge money. IMO it's a fight Hatton has more a chance of winning than against the naturally bigger guys like Cotto/Margarito, but Mayweather bwould still be a big favouritte.

Yeah, it is a problem for Hatton. A lot of people (including MacGuigan) seemed to think that Cotto is the fight next for him as Cotto is a LW who has gone up to WW, but I think Cotto looks far more comfortable at WW than he ever did at LW. And Hatton is too short to go jumping too many weights, he loses his main asset the minute he goes up a division, his ability to bully people in the ring. I actually think the best fight for Hatton at that weight is Mayweather, as Mayweather doesn't have the power to hurt Hatton, and it would really be down to the question of whether Hatton can cut off the ring and impose his style on Mayweather. If, and it's a big if, he can he wins the fight, otherwise he loses and probably quite badly. Against any of the other big names at WW I think his roughhouse tactics will cause him all sorts of problems. Although maybe a tune-up fight with Zab Judah could be achievable...

The only person who could possibly do well (maybe even beat) Hatton at 140 is Malignaggi. Malignaggi throws the jab non-stop and if he can use it to good effect he would be able to stop hatton going to the body and stop the possibility of any infighting. It could be a wide UD if paulie could do that. but thats a big IF. He couldn't do it well enough against Cotto, it just depends on how much he has learned since then. Lovermore Ndou, Vivian Harris don't stand a chance. Neither does Junior Witter. Ricardo Torres vs. Ricky Hatton would be intriguing, Torres did after all put Miguel Cotto on the seat of his trunks, that could be a potential upset of the year. But for now Hatton is the number one guy.

Witter is better than all of the other contenders to hatton at 140...he should fight him...oscar knocks his ass out like mayorga...pbf, and mosley stop him late....he walks through malignaggi, might have enough pop to hurt cotto, but cotto is strong and will hurt ricky much worse....

He doesnt kill the fighters you mentioned..

But you make a good point in fairness.. Hatton is in a strange situation..

I think his biggest test at 140 is Paulie for sure..

I think forbes could go the distance with him but loose..

Dhop,witter mbaye n torres all get stopped by hatton..

The talk of oscar however is in fact at 147.. I think that would truely be a great chance for hatton to make the most of that .. I would however like him to take a tune up at welter first!

Floyd at 147.. Great fight to take..im not sure about it.. On hattons best day i think he could muster a close decision Unsure of win or loose as the styles give you hope but will anyone ever beat floyd is the question..

The only people who want Hatton to fight Witter are the ones that don't wanna see their boy at 147 get beaten up by rick cos it's a no win situation, if Hatton wins, they got beat, if Hatton loses he was too small for 147 anyway.

From Hattons appearence, physique and conditioning last saturday im actually more inclined to believe that he could comfortably compete at 147. His body mass had increased dramatically since the Urango fight but he was not carrying as much in the arms as i thought he would so i believe he can pack on a little more muscle for an increase in power.
Hatton at 147 is an entirely different fighter and would undoubtedly prepare using different tactics and style even.
Barry McGuigan constantly mentione SSM and Cotto last saturday night. Should Hatton move up effectively these are two fights which are winnable and could cement the Hitman's status forever.
And once Again, please don't thin im taking a negative view of Cotto or Sugar Shane. I actually love both fighters, i jus feel Cotto is a little slow for Hatton and that Sugar Shane has run out of his second wind as a fighter after Collazo. (Which upsets me because I worship Shane.)

But anyways, first and foremost Hatton needs a test at welter to get used to the heat up there.

I would love to see a Malignaggi Hatton fight, that interests me far more than a fight with Castillo ever did. Malignaggi has been on HBO for his last 3 fights now so I would think it could be just as big a fight as Castillo at least in the states, plus Paulie is a live opponent.

Oh come off it you said yourself you hadn't seen Witter fight since Judah fight and all he done was run thats bad comparison.

Witter has none of the tools required to beat Hatton.
Witter cannot be compared to Collazo, he is far too random, lacks consistency and power and frankly as he is, is overrated. I do not even feel he is world champ material. I'm sorry if im offending any

Ricky could get guys to move up to 140 to fight him but then people would complain about that too

The big names want Ricky now and it wont do him any good to move up wen they may move down

I definatly see the Malignaggi fight next and dont see the de la hoya fight happening at all

and as for junior Witter lol the onli thing he'd beat hatton at is who has the biggest mouth

CC. I totally agree with you. I've always said that Hatton is a monster at 140 but he's not beating any of the names at 147. He's not beating Cotto, Mosley, Tony, and he sure as hell is not beating Floyd. I laughed out loud when he said that his style would give Floyd fits. Is this guy kidding himself, his style is tailor made for Floyd. Floyd's jab will keep Hatton from lunging in and smothering and Floyd will keep an effective distance. You don't lunge in and smother against Floyd without throwing punches because Floyd does his most effective work on the inside. And I'M TELLING YOU, Floyd WILL BE the better puncher at 147. Mark my words. Hatton's hands are fast but Floyd's hands are faster. IMO it could be a Gatti-style massacre.

Hatton is a great fighter at 140 but at welter he's average.
