Hatton a living legend?
I feel his best bet is to become a living legend @140 and make anyone who wants to fight him come down or up.....I wouldn't move seeing as how 140 is where all of his assests are maximized..he has the speed, power, strength, endurance, work rate, everything and if he moves up or down he loses his advantages....Think about it his record could be like 70-0 if he just wipes out everyone at the 140 from no 1. to the bottom...much more impressive than going up to 147 and lose...IMO

Re: Hatton a living legend?
I dont think so. For a long time now Hatton V Cotto has been a mouthwatering prospect and it needs to happen. Rick should be the one to step out of his comfort zone and tackle him head on. If he loses so be it, but he loses safe in the knowledge that he took on the toughest challenge available. Id rather he do that than wipe the floor with good, but not exceptional competition at 140lbs.

Re: Hatton a living legend?
Haton is big on legacy. IT MEANS ALOT TO HIM. i DON'T THINK HE WILL BE ABLE TO RESIST THE TEMPTATION TO MOVE UP T 147 AND FIGHT Mayweather, Mosley, Maragarito or Cotto. I think Hatton will fight at Welter again by the end 0f 2008 maybe even sooner, i also think he will be defeated by the end of '08.

if he moves up to 147 this year..he will lose....

wins over good opponents are better than getting his ass beat by the class at 147...and i mean that literally..PBF,mosley,cotto, would beat his ass like he's never had it beaten before....

Re: Hatton a living legend?
Hattons a good fighter far from a legend.
-
Re: Hatton a living legend?
He should make an attempt at doing both. First solidifying his status as the best jr. welter of our era with 2 more high class 140 opponents.
And then travelling to the carnival of carnage that is 147 and embelish 2 or 3 diamonds into his legacy.

I'd rather see Hatton v Cotto any day of the week over Hatton v Mayweather. Cotto himself moved up to 147 and after watching Hatton smash Castillo i honestly don't see the trip up being a problem at all. ;) I wanna see the Hitman where he should be in a proper fight not chasing some twat around the ring all night :)
Starting to think Ricky could damage Cotto if they meet and on that display he has absolutely nothing to fear in meeting him.
-
Re: Hatton a living legend?
I think Hatton could step into the ring confident that if the brawling did not go well against Cotto he could comfortably box to a decision Win.
I love both fighters and this truely would be a Dream fight.
Cotto's patriotic Puerto Rican Fans meet Ricky's True Blue Army. WOW.

GIVE ME A BREAK. Hatton is a very very good fighter. One of the top ones around today? But a LIVING LEGEND? Come on. Muhammad Ali and George Foreman are living legends. Michael Jordan is a living legend. Ricky Hatton is just a very good fighter and one of the few who utilizes a style that is exciting to the "blood and guts" fans who want to see a toe to toe exchanging brawl in the ring. I admit it is fun to watch him fight and I think what really makes him special, if anything is his relationship to the fans. But a living legend he is not. Maybe in another 15 years we can rethink this post, but right now...hell no.
I like the Cotto match up, i think it would make for one exciting fight but I think Cotto would destroy him. Hatton may mouth off that his four rounds against Castillo were more exciting than all of Floyd Mayweather's career, but Mayweather would make him look stupid and easily outbox him over a 12 round decision that would inevitably draw more scrutinism Floyd's way for his "boring" style of hitting and not getting hit (so really he probably shouldnt even bother); which I thought, used to be called "boxing", not boring. I happen to think there is a high level of skill and art involved in the way Mayweather fights and although brawls can be more exciting to some because of the high level of adrenalin and action and damage given and received, there is something to be said about watching a master boxer take precedence over a less skilled fighter.
I like Hatton and I respect that he is one of the top jr welters in the game today. But I think he's gonna really need to stay there for if he comes up to 147 there is more than a few fighters that would handle the "Living Legend". By the way someone should tell Rick if Floyd is so boring, maybe he shouldnt be copying his entrance walks with the sombrero, which, by the way, I can't decide is an underhanded compliment or an insult to the Mexican people. I'm sure it has been taken both ways...anyway, I don't wanna knock the guy too hard. He does great work in the ring and usually does what he says and has been exciting and gracious to his fans, who as I said before really are what make him "legendary" in any kind of respect...but...here are the fighters I think will put an end to Hatton's undefeated "legendary" prowess if he gets into the ring with them...
Miguel Cotto...would be a hell of a toe to toe fight i think...but Cotto would outwork him and break him down in the later rounds.
Floyd Mayweather...would just run circles around Hatton. Probably would look similar to the Baldomir fight and people would be pissed.
Antonio Margarito...just too big for Hatton. I think that's really the problem with him moving up weight. Rick just aint that big.
Sugar Shane Mosley...bottom line, if you dont have something special; some kind of x factor that involves a style difference or huge height advantage...you are going to have problems fighting SSM. Ricky Hatton does not have this something special and is a pretty standard fighter; tough as hell and a great heart. But like has been said before"...show me a fighter with phenomenal heart...and I will show you a man ready to take one hell of a beating..."
Joshua Clottey...this would be an exciting fight too but I think Clottey is a better boxer and is stronger and a little bit bigger. That's what makes the difference.

Totally agree Memphis everyone wants him to move up including me and i think he is being treated bit unfairly he didn't have alot of time at to get used to his new weight last time vs Collazo i think he will be alot better at Welterweight in his next fight at that weight and people will be surprised gurantee it.

No one is suggesting that he is fella. The point being that if Hatton stayed at 140 and hammered anyone that dare step to him he COULD go down as a legend. Of course that wont happen, but it COULD ;)

Re: Hatton a living legend?
If he get mayweather next he will either retire or try go for witter and retire so he doesn't go out on a loss.
-
Re: Hatton a living legend?
Cotto.... next a legend give that might be well actually thats ridiculous time = legends
-
Re: Hatton a living legend?
why should hatton step up? he obviously isnt a living legend yet but what makes george foreman as an earlier post suggested ! this man is the best 140 fighter in the world why should he move up ?

he needs alot more to be a living legend. Funny how a fighter is talked about being a legend only after a few fights. Even Floyd Mayweather who has not really fought many other legends except Delahoya is said to be a legend. If it was that easy everyone would be a legend. Floyd is good and I picked him to beat Oscar, but he has to do more to be considered a real legend. He is a good fighter. Exceptional. But not a legend. The fights are not there yet. If he fights Mosley and Wright and beats Cotto then that would be a step in the right direction. And Hatton still has alot to do. He has to show this dominance in another 5-10 fights.

Re: Hatton a living legend?
The 140lb division during the Tszyu era was probably the strongest in boxing, he unified the title, fought the best out there and was good enough to be avoided by the likes of DLH and Mosley like the plague.
Hatton is the new king at 140 and there is no-one left for him to fight..Witter, Harris or Malignaggi do not pose a threat to him. The big fights are at Welterweight and that means Cotto or Margo or Mosley!
Hatton has a real chance of becoming the greatest fighter to ever come out of the UK, big statement i know but the opportunity is there. He is young enough and tough enough to do this, his detractors are mainly from the US who are judging him on two ordinary fights last year.
Hatton may very well lose to Cotto but what a fight it would be! Cotto would have witnessed the Castillo fight and will have some doubt planted in his head about those body shots of Hatton.
To early to call him a legend, he needs a Cotto win before that accolade is bestowed upon him.

I think Hatton is on his way to being a great fighter. I just think we have to look at fighters like Tyson or Curry or McGuigan. Guys who looked great and then crashed. But he proved alot on Sat. I think his defense is better than Cotto, which is good since he cannot have bad defense against a puncher like Cotto. That would be a grueling fight. Hopefully Hatton would get used to the weight before he takes on Cotto. He might be a little too small for Welt.
-
Re: Hatton a living legend?
Living legend????
He may be endeared to his homeland fans but he has not really accomplished enough to be considered a legend.....A win over Kostya Tszyu...Castillo and a couuple of close calls at 147 does not make a legend....Legends need that one fight to call great to go along with the other accomplishments....EG
Leonard/Hearns
Holyfield/Bowe trilogy
or to dominate other great fighters in thier prime....
-
Re: Hatton a living legend?
Oh hell no!
Living legend?
I say, Not yet.
He must fight atleast 5 or 6 big names and win convincingly.
Big names are in welterweight and lightweight. It means he has to move up in weight, or go back down.
-
Re: Hatton a living legend?
I think Hatton should get to fighting top top guys now. He is such a good high energy fighter now that if he gets just 2 or 3 years older it will not be there for him anymore. Too bad he cannot hold 147 like he can 140 or he would be right there in the mix. Although the really great fighters can usually move up and fight well without the weight being a factor. But that is usually the great ones who can do it. Maybe that is how he will prove his greatness. That is the one thing which lacks with the career of Marvin Hagler. Marvin should have moved up and fought Michael Spinks. Alot of people will say, well Spinks was too big. Well that is why it is a challenge. Hagler was too big for Hearns also and Hearns fought him. Virgil Hill was too big for Hearns also. Rosario was too big for Chavez maybe and Chavez overwhelmed him. That is why they are challenges. The fight Hatton should fight now is Mayweather. He would probably lose on points but that would not really hurt him in the long run. It would be a big fight and exciting.

I don't see why he can not hold 147??..Self admittingly he walks around sometimes as high as 170-180 depending on how long a layoff he has...He weighed in comfortably at 140 even and all he needs is a couple extra pounds remember 140 is the limit of the Jr welters at 141 you are a welterweight and the limit for that is 147...If he so choose he could compete at that weight
-
Re: Hatton a living legend?
I reckon Ricky must now be the biggest boxing star britain has ever produced - I know Turpin beat Sugar Ray but Hatton has really taken the US by storm. He has stopped two greats in Tszyu and Castillo. Love to see him fight Cotto - wow.
-
Re: Hatton a living legend?
as strong as Cotto is at 147, he is yet to prove himself a destroyer of great fighters. Good ones yes, great ones no. Alot of people seem to think that Cotto would destroy Hatton at 147 but I'm not sure what gives them this Idea. Hatton at his best has been equally as devastating as Cotto, only against opposition of a higher pedigree.
In all honesty, a fight between the two would be an 8 rounder with a coin flip as to who the winner is, but it is nearly impossible to say that Hatton is massively better than Cotto, or vice versa. To say that Hatton can not cut it with Cotto only highlights the fact that you have not really watched him fight.
-
Re: Hatton a living legend?
Julio Cesar Chavez, Roberto Duran, Marvin Hagler, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Pernell Whitaker, Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson, Wilfredo Gomez, Wilfred Benitez, all those are living legends, Cotto and Hatton haven't done enough in their careers to be called legends, IMO Hatton will lose to all the elite fighters 147 and up, so him calling out PBF and even more so DLH is crazy

well let's see how effective he fights there. Seems like the problem is not the weight as much as the size. He seems to be an average 140 pounded , if not more on the small side of 140.. that is the problem with fighting a guy like Margarito. Margarito would have a pretty big advantage in size. But it would be interesting to see if Hatton could overcome what all great fighters had to.
-
Re: Hatton a living legend?
Mayweather fight CAN'T happen imo, Mayweather is too big now. If Hatton wants to become a great he does need to move up to 147, but I think Cotto has the edge at 147 and Mosely will be way too strong - after all he has been fighting 12 rounds with the likes of Winky - Tony Not sure?
-
Re: Hatton a living legend?
Ricky would get huge props if he went to 147 and fought there. And if he really wants to cement his legacy, that is what he will do. He only has a few fights left due to his style, why not go out with a bang. It would be nice to see a fighter fight like a warrior to cement his legacy and not as a businessman etc.
-
Re: Hatton a living legend?
to everyone who keep saying "a legend, hell no!" no one is saying he is..it was a "what if" what if he sayed at 140 and beat everyone from top to bottom his record could be like 70-0 and that would make him a legend....so everyone who's just ready to jump all over the idea with their "hell no, and no way," comments should read first then reply...
-
Re: Hatton a living legend?
I agree with JonesJrMayweather somewhat, but i gotta say, Ricky will never make 70 fights....
His own Bodyclock is against him, preventing him from ever achieving that feat.
So as an alternative he is forced to preform a smaller number of greater feats....
Climbing to 147 is the Key to making Ricky a legend.
I'm behind him all the way!!!

he could make 60 easy..and to be 60 - 0 and one or two solid welterweight wins will make him a legend....so get the 60 first for it will look more impressive than losing @ 147 then going back down....

he probaly wont fight 50 if he goes to 147 if he stays at 140 he will probably fight only a handul of times then move up... i dont see him fighting many more than 50
he is going to run out of fights after about 7 to 10
i might be wrong though...
man i wish he was 5'8 or 9 with a natrual body for 147... his fight w/ cotto would be insane if they were the same weight..... but a win over a bigger cotto would do even more for his legacy...
right now if he beat cotto it would be as good as if he was to beat mayweather

not really, for cotto-hatton wouldn't be as big a test for him because he wouldn't have to overcome that much in terms of disadvantages....mayweather is far more dangerous than cotto in terms of exposing or embarrasing him..because he's never seen the likes of mayweather...

Re: Hatton a living legend?
It's debatable whether Hatton's legacy would be better if he stayed at JNR WW and fought guys like Paulie,Torres etc, unified the titles and stayed undefeated(because everyone would say he never took risks, who did he fights etc) but on the other hand,if he goes to 147 and loses,he loses his undefeated record and everyone would say he beat 2 old fighters etc.
There is no win win situation for Hatton. I'd say go to 147,risk fighting a big guy like Cotto. Even if he lost,as least he could go out with a bang and he would get HUGE props if he put up a great effort. Anyway, like he has said, with his style,he does not have long left so it would be impossible to get to 60-0 etc.

You're way off JonesJunior,Floyd at 147 and most likely 154,has been superb defensively but offensively,he is not as good as he used to be so the chances of him "embaressing" anyone are very very slim. He would potshot and win a ud,thats not embaressing. Whereas against Cotto,Hatton is more likely to get KTFO. Did Floyd embaress Zab,Baldo,Oscar? No.

if 120-108 isn't embarassing i don't know what is...and oscar is a far better and bigger threat than hatton, not to mention it was PBF first fight at 154...and considering styles hatton would get hit with more than pot shots he'd get hit about 300 times if he makes it to twelve...floyd land over 50% power punches hatton would be a mobile heavy bag...
-
Re: Hatton a living legend?
That scoreline was flattering, towards the end,I had Baldo winning a few rounds and wasn't as if Floyd was punishing him was it?
As for Oscar,he is more accomplished than Hatton, bigger but a better pressure fighter? ABSOLUTELY NOT. I said it as soon as the fight was announced,Oscar is no pressure fighter, pressure is all Hatton does.
Floyd would beat Hatton but I doubt he would embaress him. Hatton would have his moments.

if he beats hatton 120-108 or even 118-110 that's embarassing considering hatton's style which is damn near impossible to escape..and if floyd manages to do so...hatton would not only be battered from being hit on the way in he'd be tired from all his misses....
