bed bound for the last 6 weeks!

Re: bed bound for the last 6 weeks!
Heya...I'm not any huge expert but i can relay a little wisdom from a guy i know who is.
He reckons muscle has fantastic "memory." Once u develop a muscle to an extent once, (and then let it slip so to speak) it is a lot easier to rebuild that muscle in comparison to when you first achieved such condition. However he also believes that once u reach ur thirties it becomes much more important to maintain constant condition as once u slip the opposite happens and it becomes considerably harder as the body depreciates in condition.

Re: bed bound for the last 6 weeks!
im only 22 so that aint a problem, i knew about muscle memory i was wondering how long it would take to reach the point i was at before i became bed bound. Only asking because i saw myself in the mirror and i have some weights at home and thought i could do my arms from my bed but i have gone from curling 20kg in sets of 8 with ease to struggling to do one rep with 20kg. i'd put some of that down to me coming off creatine aswell.

Re: bed bound for the last 6 weeks!
Well i cant really be of much aid to ya...I'm strictly a boxer, at middleweight or light middleweight so when i stop trainin my weight goes up although never by more than 3kg!!!

Re: bed bound for the last 6 weeks!
Do you mind me to ask you what happened to cause you to become bedridden?

Re: bed bound for the last 6 weeks!
If I remember correctly Bruce Lee damaged is lower vertebrae by doing too much weight on a good morning back exercise. This injury caused him to literally stay bed bound and flat on his back for 6 months. He couldn't exercise, but he found confort in reading plenty of self-help and motivation books to defy what doctors said was impossible. They said he be lucky to walk let alone do martials arts.
Willie Pep got in a terrific airplane crash that made the commision propose a 500k settlement as compesation but would mean he'd have to hang up the gloves. He managed to overcome his injuries and get back in the ring.
There are many other miracle stories, and there are books on it that are worth checking out.
I'f you've fallen on some hard times I'd recommend that you use the time to heal and to spend time thinking about doing all the stuff that you'd like to do. Catch up on some reading, come up with a game plan, just don't make the mistake of getting yourself into more harm too soon.

Re: bed bound for the last 6 weeks!
Being injured always sucks but sounds like you're on your way back.
I had to stop training for a while and although I haven't got my aerobic capacity back fully yet I've got more muscle now than I had pre-injury.
I don't think it'll take long to get it back so don't stress too much about it.
I spent a lot of my injured time researching things like this forum and found a heap of things which will make me better than I would have been without the enforced break and reflection time.
I also found my time being injured helped me discover other form of training which were easier on my body but made me fitter and stronger.
I had a system before injuring myself that I enjoyed but it wasn't the healthiest. Being injured woke me up to that.
As I continue to recover I'll adopt my old training ways back to an extent but I've got a few more things in my routine now I don't want to give up.

Re: bed bound for the last 6 weeks!
i snapped my leg from my ankle, and to make it worse they couldnt operate for a few days after because the swelling was that bad, i have had plates or some form of metal put in to hold it together til it heals, was a right mess, im not exactly bed bound but even resting the leg/pot makes it hurt, the pain is like one of them ab belts that gives you shocks wrapped round my calf and foot, im not allowed to put any weight on it and to top it off i have to go have the pot took off every week to check on how its coming on, i am dreading having the staples removed that were binding my flesh together after the op.
my weight has gone from around 15 stone down to 13.5 stone in just over a month. Kind of wish i did more c.v instead of just powerlifting, im going to have a right gut

Re: bed bound for the last 6 weeks!
Hang tough dude. You'll get over it, you know that you just need to give it time to heal. Are you stuck in bed for the time being? As for exercise if I were you I would get some grippers or something to strengthen your hands. There's the captain of crush hand grippers which can be pretty tough. Just don't do any insane stunts while your leg is giving you hell.

Re: bed bound for the last 6 weeks!
yeah im stuck in bed around 90% of the day. luckily i have the internet hooked up to my lcd tv so that makes time fly pretty fast.

More like they'll fall off from overuse after 6 weeks. ;)

Re: bed bound for the last 6 weeks!
CC back Chris.
When I was first limited in my training from injury I thought it'd be study catch up time. In reality I was so annoyed at being injured I was LESS productive with my study. I spent all my time googling injury websites instead :-[
Hope you find a way to relax more than I did - all the anger and self pity I had was a waste of energy. I think your injury sounds more severe than mine too. Good on you for being so mature in the way you seem to be coping :)

Re: bed bound for the last 6 weeks!
Wow, I can imagine you doing that Sharla, and it'll probably be a while before you're back at it full throttle again. How's that stuborn knee and ankle treating you these days?
Anyways back to music, you still have a sense of humor if you're talking about bigger wrists, you gotta keep anything like that up so you don't feel like a vegetable. Just keep the hardcore stuff on the d/l. ;)

Never had a problem with the ankle - it's the knee and back. Can't run on hard roads but can on grass and still not skipping but am back 100 % in every other way. Still get back pain from time to time but it's under control. I've found building a bit more back muscle and stretching has made life easier.

Re: bed bound for the last 6 weeks!
That's great Sharla, I'm glad to hear that you have it under control. At least you're able to learn from your injuries, kind of like a blessing in disguise maybe.

The proof of the pudding will be that you'll be able to do all the things that you want to do with all the right things to keep in mind. :)

Re: bed bound for the last 6 weeks!
That's definately what we all aim for!

Re: bed bound for the last 6 weeks!
It's called wisdom Sharla.
Hah, that kind of sounds like something Scrap would say right now. ;D

Re: bed bound for the last 6 weeks!
We all have to come back from injuries
You know what the seperation is?
Coming back
Good on anyone who can find their way back

Re: bed bound for the last 6 weeks!
Too true CC Monkey
I never thought I'd get injured until it happened. Very easy for anyone not to know until it's too late that you've been doing something wrong.

Re: bed bound for the last 6 weeks!
i have found out i will need physio 3 times a week for about a month or so after the pot is off. does anyone know what this will involve? i cant see how they can teach me anything i dont already know about walking, i have been doing it the past 22 years
-
Re: bed bound for the last 6 weeks!
I went to the physio for my knee but the treatment is obviously different.
I went once a week max but often rescheduled and ended up doing it every 2 weeks - i couldn't really afford more than that.
I hope you're covered well with private health insurance - 3 visits a week sounds expensive.
I went until I had a clear diagnosis of what the problem was and then stopped going since then I figured I knew pretty much what to do and didn't need the continual check ups.
I'd probably go a lot to begin with and then judge how much you need the appointments after a month or so perhaps?
-
Re: bed bound for the last 6 weeks!
not got any insurance it will be on the good old NHS
-
Re: bed bound for the last 6 weeks!
I needed to go to the physio often until they worked out what was wrong and what to do about it - then I used my own judgement to decide how much I really needed.
When it got to the stage where most of my appointments were just check ups and I was just doing exercises they gave me to do at home alone I had fewer appointments.
For me it was really expensive the first few months and then eased off. Hopefully you can do the same perhaps?
-
Re: bed bound for the last 6 weeks!
iv already started to ease a bit of weight on the foot, just the weight of my leg while im sat down, coz im off on hol in 5 weeks and i dont need the hassle of physio and walking round with a tripod, when i cud be in the gym i dont want to be walkin round on hol with a mr bean body.
-
Re: bed bound for the last 6 weeks!
Can you go to the physio just for one or two appointments before you go and get them to set you exercises you can do while you're on Holiday?
You wouldn't want to do something in the wrong way or order and be set back. It took my physio a long time to work out which part of my knee was injured and I spent months doing the wrong exercises. Not a setback I'd wish on someone else!

Re: bed bound for the last 6 weeks!
