Hatton fans booing national anthems?
From Dan Rafael of ESPN today:
Quote:
Few fans are as passionate as the Brits are when they get behind a fighter like they have Hatton. But as great as it was to see all those thousands who traveled to see Hatton-Castillo (and to hear their inventive songs about him), many of those same fans displayed disgusting and disrespectful behavior. You didn't see it on HBO's broadcast because it happened just before the telecast began, but they booed throughout the American and Mexican national anthems. That's like school on Saturday: No class.
I'm not overly-patriotic, so normally stuff like this doesn't bother me... but it still shows a lack of class.

Re: Hatton fans booing national anthems?
wowsers! i didnt hear any booing? none that i could remember atleast?
-
Re: Hatton fans booing national anthems?
Who says Hatton's fans have class? His fans are working class 'soccer hooligans' :P ;)
And I'd boo the American national anthem, too. I can't stand those Yanks.

Then your'e just a nationalistic idiot blinded by either stupidity or hate.
No room for that in boxing or on this forum.
Prior to Mayweather entering the ring at the Oscar fight I heard more racist slurs from the Mexican crowd than I have ever heard from any race, creed, breed, or color in my life...that was before Floyd came in wearing the colors & the cap.
It's always amazed me that the boxers show more respect for one another than some of their fans.
-
Re: Hatton fans booing national anthems?
....Let me see someone boo the American National Anthem.....it'll be the last song they ever hear!
You don't have to sing along or anything but show some respect....I damn sure respect other countries....it's what everyone is taught as an American now, "Americans have to be nice to everyone".....well I draw the line at people who don't respect us back.
Lots of stuff wrong with today's world...lack of class, lack of backbone, lack of people really standing up for themselves.... and lack of dirty hippies getting beat down by cops!

:coolclick: Leave it to the "King of America" to hit the nail on the head. :appl:

Hatton fans booing national anthems? I don't know about that, but one thing for sure...
what I've noticed was Castillo fans were chanting "Mexico! Mexico!" and Hattons fans were booing.

Nothing wrong there...nationalistic rivalries are fine...but not to the point of booing during the anthems.
All bets are off with shit like that.
I'm a huge Hopkins fan...but him trashing the Puerto flag & stomping it...that pissed me the fwock off...selling the show or not...that was wrong.

Well as long as there would be no riot, I guess it's all good. ^-^

Re: Hatton fans booing national anthems?
For a while I've tried to figure out why people feel the need to bring their national pride into boxing, whether it be the fighter himself or the fans but always I have come to no conclusion. It serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever, aside showing the kind of ignorant mentality that's bred into us from the cradle.
If you think 'Mexico, Mexico!', you're probably a Mexican't :P

Maybe you're right.....
.....and then maybe you're a pinko tree hugging hippy commie bastard.

Re: Hatton fans booing national anthems?
Let me guess, ultimately proud to be American? Support the war of terror war in Iraq?
Atleast you can admit that I may be right though ;)
-
Re: Hatton fans booing national anthems?
Boxing has always been a sport where people rooted for fighters of the same nationality or ethnicity. And that's fine. Look at the phenomenal support that Mexican fans have given their fighters over the years. Same goes for Puerto Rican fans, and Filipino fans with Pacquiao. Same goes for British fans, or all the Irish fans that came out to see Duddy in New York.
That type of support is great, but it's over the line when a fanbase actively boos another country's national anthem, be it Mexico's anthem, the US's... whatever. That's just stupid and ignorant.
And like I said before, I'm American, but I'm not that patriotic, normally I could care less about stuff like this. But it's just a dumb thing to do in general.

Re: Hatton fans booing national anthems?
.....fyi it's "I COULDN'T care less"....saying you COULD care less means you care and the ammount which you care could be less than it is therefore meaning you still care to an extent.....but this is just a minor detail...hope this helps ;D
-
Re: Hatton fans booing national anthems?
If you really have respect then quit trying to kill the free speech. This is where I could be saying things like you should try not having an opinion on anything in general until you lose 50lbs of fat thus allowing the airpassages in your body to clear up, letting oxygen reach that jelly bean you call a brain. But I won't since I'm a friendly person :)
-
Re: Hatton fans booing national anthems?
....oh and as a point I would like everyone to recognize that I don't think booing should be illegal or anything, I believe in free speech to the highest extent but some things show a lack of couth and should not be done.....like burning the American Flag for example.....you have a right to do it, but it doesn't mean it should be done.....that's just a little something the limp wristed self loathing Americans don't get.
-
Re: Hatton fans booing national anthems?
....I KNEW you would go the "killing free speech" route.....I'm not in that category at all....I just think there is a way to get your point across without insulting everyone.
Part of what makes America great is that everyone has a say no matter how big of an idiot they are (and that's not directed at anyone so please let's not try to insult me with it)....but people need to show respect and it's not always easy to do.
Being "the bigger man" is something America and Americans used to be good at....the divisiveness of these days has really dealt a blow to that line of thinking

You are sure right on the button with that statement. I wish I could remember the man who said this so I could give credit, but here is the quote " Man has and always will worship the natural born fighter, regardless of color, religion or background". Something to that effect; but you guys get the message. Too bad people that worship the natural born fighter can't always respect him as a man/woman without putting some stupid skin color or ethnicity into the equation. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Hatton fans booing national anthems?
When you call someone a pinko tree hugging hippy commie bastard because their opinion is a bit different, you're not a fan of free speech. Even if you do say you believe in the concept, your actions speak louder than that and I'm guessing thats how you're encouraged to voice yourself on the forum.

.....honestly that pinko hippy blah blah blah was in jest....but hey, I have the right to say it....you taking offense to it is just a consequence of the right to free speech and people seem to forget that part of free speech which is why I don't believe booing a national anthem or burning a flag should be done lightly....because just as you are insulted by my words, people can be insulted by other people's words or actions.
-
Re: Hatton fans booing national anthems?
Alright Lyle & drgonzo...let's drop this right now, please.
Freedom of speech or not...this is getting out of hand & you are both handling a loaded gun that really doesn't need to go off on the front page of our forum.
Let this go or discuss it like adults.
I'm guilty of getting bent over it too...but let's not drowned by going over board.
Thanks fellars. Please calm down.

Very well put Lyle...but still...let's try to ease this back to where it started.

That's not true for american's as a whole. Last year our hockey team was in the stanley cup and they booed us down in Anaheim. Also the americans in Borat didn't seen very respectful of the national anthem of Kazikstan... I can't spell it.

Holy shit...please say your'e joking...not sure about the Stanley Cup...but Borat's anthem? Heh heh heh.
-
Re: Hatton fans booing national anthems?
Just because I find you to be a hypocrite doesn't mean I'm offended
I agree with you on booing national anthems though, because if you're partaking in that, then obviously you're proud of whatever geographical location you were spit out of :)
Good night to you Lyle, I must sleep

....all I can say to that is "ignorance knows no political or geographic boundries" there are assholes here in the US and there are assholes everywhere else.

Well I like Americans personally, but they, Americans ,more for political reasons, and over-nationalistic beliefs tend to be hated around the world. As a Canadian I know people from Europe and asia treat us better if they know we are Canadian as opposed to American.
-
Re: Hatton fans booing national anthems?
IMO it goes back to the kindergarden rule, treat others like you would like to be treated, all i know is that if anyone were to boo my anthem (Puerto Rico) i would be offended big time, especially when i would have the respect to remain quiet and standing while yours is going, it's common courtesy
-
Re: Hatton fans booing national anthems?
I dont recall if we got to hear national anthems on Setanta. Its a horrible thing though to boo another nations tune, it happens at England football matches all the time and frankly its embarrassing.
A definite no no as far as Im concerned, those who do it ought to be ashamed of themselves. I remember this discussion from a while back and some people passed it of as a big of harmless fun. Knock knock jokes are harmless fun, insulting a huge amount of people isnt funny at all.
-
Re: Hatton fans booing national anthems?
They shouldn't play national anthems in sporting events anyway. It is a pointless exercise.
-
Re: Hatton fans booing national anthems?
Do they play each team's national anthem in futball or soccer?
If so, is it customary for the other fans to boo the other's anthem?
If so, we are not used to this here. I've never seen it at a boxing match.
-
Re: Hatton fans booing national anthems?
In soccer there is generally a lack of respect for national anthems at international matches
Booing, loud whistling or other stupid things. No claas, no respect and no selfrespect i think
If you have to downgrade someone else to make a statement then you don't get the full picture of being well mannered and having values and morals

Isn't there always riots at stadiums? heh

Re: Hatton fans booing national anthems?
chanting 'mexico' 'usa' same flipside of the coin as the 'boo'. Panto season.
I don't stand for anyones national anthem not yours, not ours, what's the point of it?
I always walk out or sit down and I don't care what people think. At least I am thinking and not being a mindless sheep or just doing it in case I get picked on for not doing it.
