Calzaghe's weird punches?
Just watched his fight against Lacy and yesterday a replay against Manfredo. And noted that he has a weird hand position when delivering the punch that actually robs him of power. Anyone else seen this?

I love Calzaghe and think he would have had Manfredo inside 7 but he was(in the Manfredo fight) Throwing like a woman...  To no credit of manfredo who did not and would not capitalize!(Joe threw like his hand was broken!)
I don't care if it was broken or hurt...  Take lessons from gatti!  Hide it til its numb.. Don't throw it like your slapping your sister...(Again no credit to manfredo who slipped great but don't hate on the ref who saw you slip and be hit by 30 punches unanswered)... (I may be a Manfredo fan but... fuck... Throw a punch)

He has broke his hands many times in his career and has developed this punch/slap to save his hands from further damage.

Believe it or not Pride Of Boston Calzaghe used to be a bit of a banger in his younger days.
Re: Calzaghe's weird punches?
The issue that I have with Joe is that shit! he does with his hands where he leaves them to the side of his body dropped leaving his guard down.

I hear ya... Until just prior to lacy I had little knowlegeof him but I did a bit of homework... He is a great boxer and had a nice KO percentage... He made me a fan! But of late he throws like a bitch... But he isn't one! These brittle hands are killing him. Course Warren isn't doing him any better then his hands!!!!

CC back ;D. No it's true, he was a very hard puncher but as a young lad he never wrapped his hands. Every now and again you see a proper shot but its mostly 'slapping' and he aint done too bad with it to be honest.

I hear ya... I think he should have been exposed to the American public years ago... His style is exciting... It's friggin sad that we're just seeing the twilight of his career... Most Americans got to see the Lacy fight and thats it... He fuckin destroyed Lacy(Awsome fight) but hus promotion sucked(I've seen the Eubank fight and a handfull more)I can't wait for Lacys return...

I agree, but the money in the UK is to good to turn down, look at Eubank he made about 20 million in the ring without fighting any American star, or travelling. Calzaghe made huge mistake after battering Sheika in 2000 he should of fought in America and cashed in who knows where Calzaghe would be now if that happened. Shame really.

He is a boxer that could have done great things. Frank Warren keeps his fighters waaaaay too safe. I wouldn't be surprised if Warren thought Joe was gonna lose to lacy.

No way... Warren is way smarter then you or I and thats not a good thing for boxing ;D ;D ;D
Re: Calzaghe's weird punches?
Poor Joe has really brittle hands, when he retires I bet he won't even be able to play Fight Night on his Xbox without serious risk of busting his hand.
Re: Calzaghe's weird punches?
Yea my 7 year old niece throw a more correct punch that the Welsh Slapper ;D
wot a waste of talent thankyou Mr Warren ;D

He wasn't really a banger. He was just facing a lot of bums that were easy to knock out. Now he faces bums that are a little harder to knock out. So his knock out percentage has gone down.

He was a banger in his day, he hit extremmly hard... when he was around 15 he was told by doctors he would never be able to turn pro because he hit 'so had for his weight' he would be plauged by hand troulbes, they were half right, he would be plauged by hand troubles, but it still hasn't stopped him being one of, if not the best SMW of all time.

i feel the same how it's a shame
i always used to feel that Calzaghe never got the credit he deserved he should have been taken international years ago every fight i watchedi just felt bad for him.IMO he deserved a big pay day
But Good old Franky boy knows best huh???
I lost respect for Calzaghe after the Lacy fight not for his boxing ability just his stupid fucking showboating it was like he thought cus he had americans watching he cud behave like a bit of an idiot IMO and that just dont do it fo me
i think the punching/slapping is due to hand breaks
Re: Calzaghe's weird punches?
He slapped before he broke his hands

I wouldn't agree with you that he was such a banger in his younger days, because a lot of his stoppages came more because of his swamping the opponents with punches, rather than straight knockout power. I think it was the Tyrone Jackson fight was where Jackson was actually mocking Calzaghe and standing there arms down as Calzaghe threw 9 or 10 unanswered, and was goofing off, and when the ref stepped in Jackson went ballistic cause he wasn't in trouble and was taking all that Calzaghe threw with ease. But then again, Calzaghe was one of only six of his opponents who managed to stop him, despite him losing 32 fights in all.

Maybe not the elite in terms of power, but Calzaghe could hit hard imo, i have seen most of his fights, and has left alot of opponents in a bad way.

IF you have any videos from his amateur days could you send them on, cause I've only been able to find one from his ABA days, where he first broke one of his hands. Where did you find the videos btw?
