Im just looking for suggestions
Talley,my big heavyweight,went up to Charleston to spar with the WV Amateur Champ
I tried to nicely inform him,he was being set up
Now he's dodging both of his gyms,and made comments about enrolling in law school
Obviously he got tuned,and probably hard,because that thing doesnt have speed or footwork,but it hits hard
How do I get his head back in the game
Ive got ideas,but suggestions would help
I'm no trainer, I'm a fighter. But I would sit down with him & shoot straight no pu**y footin or sugar coating. I would tell him that it will not be the last beating that he gets. Then ask him how bad does he want to be a fighter? I would let him know that everyone who's anyone in the sport of boxing has been thru way more that one beating in sparring. If they would have all thrown in the towel at that point then we would'nt have had all the great fighters (past & present) that we have.
Boxing is not for everyone. It's not the these guys fault. I think that they really beleive that this is what they want to do. The first few gym beatings is instrumental in seeing what A guy is made of, see how bad he wants to do this.
It looks good on TV, the glamour & lights. But not everyone is willing to pay the price to really leave it all in the ring/gym just for the chance to try to climb that big a** mountain.They need to do it for the love of the sport or it will never work out. As much as I'm sure u would like to convince him to keep pushing forward it will never happen if it's not in him.
U should let him know that only he can choose his path but pain is temporary & he may regret the decision to walk away for the rest of his life if he chooses that path. Let him know that u got his back in every way & that u will be there for his guidance. Then he needs to look in the mirror & make his own decision.
Two other stories off the top of my head that u might want to tell him are about MAB (Marco Antonio Barrera) & Bernard Hopkins. MAB's first time sparring he had a beating put on him so bad that he went home crying. But he pick up the pieces & went back. Bernard Hopkins, this one may be a little off base but I think it has kind of the same premise. He lost his pro debut. He obvioulsy did'nt like that turnout. But do I need to say -Look at where these 2 are now. What if trhey would've said "it's just not for me".
U let him know, beleive it or not this decision will shape the rest of his life. Pain is temporary, glory or even the beleif in yourself is forever. This can haunt him forever but if his heart is not into it he is wasting yours & his time. I got a lil long winded so I will end now but if I can help in any way just hit me up. If it works out I have a few training ideas based on the little that I read about him that u posted that may help if u would want to talk more.

Well at this point u gotta question his heart, there is nothing u personally can do. You could get a forklift n forcefully haul him to the gym but u cannot alter his mindset and attitude toward training.
If he wants to box, if he wants to fight competitively he's gotta understand it's gonna hurt and to be a fighter uv gotta jus fire back regardless. not mope about licking ur wounds. Thats no just applied to the pro boxing scene, thats for the amateurs, semi pros, kick boxing muay thai, everythin.
If he decides to come back u gotta test his will, determine whether he's got the grit for the business.

Probably his pride busted wide open that irks him the most, jus persuade him that if he keeps training he can nail the guy.

Hey,we all hit the wall sometimes,and coming from small gyms like Talley has and going up to Charelston,which is a bigtime gym,and a hell of a drive,and get tossed out with that brute to boot

A very effective tool to create motivation is to ask questions. That will make the boxer think boxing, come up with the solutions himself (or with your support, which will make him believe in the strategy more easy) and since one think in "scenes/pictures" the fighter will get at vision of how to box. Asking questions and discuss rather than giving orders are part of the leadership I believe in.
So maybe u could ask him what he learned from the sparring and "what do u need to improve to do better next time?"
