Did Hagler ever hit the Canvas?
As far as I know he never even went down once in his career. Does this make him the hardest fighter in history to put down? I think JCChavez only went down once (Randall) though he was TKO'd (but still standing) by de la Hoya. WHo else would make this list?

Re: Did Hagler ever hit the Canvas?
Omly against Roldan and it was more push thn shove. I doubt he has ever been really wobbled. His chin is made of New Hampshire granite.

... as I'm sure Tommy Hearns will happily attest to.

Didn't Chavez go down with Tszyu? If not he was completely rocked. I think he went down in that fight. Hagler should have ended his career not being knocked down. The Roldan fight was Roldan hooking and catching the back of Hagler's head and Hagler going down from a push down. He jumped right back up and complained to the ref about that being a knockdown. He was not hurt. Roldan was just so strong he actually took Hagler down with a hook which missed. After Roldan fought Hearns, Hearns had bruises on his back. Roldan hit hard.

of all the Hagler fights I have seen, the Hearns fight is the only fight where I saw him hurt and his legs give out a little and he had to regroup and hold. But to his credit he came right back and started throwing punches. Hearns is the only guy that I know actually hurt him and made Marvin flinch.

Yes your right Tszyu did deck Chavez.

That was classic, wasn't it? When Tommy threw those big guns at Hagler (that would've KO'd 99.99% of Earth's population), and Hagler momentarily flinched and came back firing............ I felt sorry for Hearns, 'cause he must've said to himself: "Oh sh*t, he's still upright!"

Chavez had an incredible chin. I am not sure how much of it is defensive and how much chin. But Hagler and Chavez both had good chins. They were hit clean at times and didn't go anywhere. Hagler might have had the best chin in the history of boxing. He took two punchers in Hearns and Mugabi and pretty much walked through their punches.

He said that in an interview later. He said I landed my hardest punch and it didn't hardly hurt him. So I knew I had to throw something harder, but I just threw my hardest punch at him. He said he just fought and prayed. Let me find that interview. It is on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIIamTvnZj4

As great of a fight as that was, I never got a full appreciation of it until well after I saw it. Seeing as how I was born after the fight, the first time I saw that fight, it was my first time watching both guys. Now I've seen most everything from Hearns, and now I have an appreciation of just how powerful that right hand is.
You're right, I can not imagine the feeling of just having someone walk through that when you know you connected with a perfect punch.
Hagler was a beast.

Re: Did Hagler ever hit the Canvas?
Yes Juan Domingo Roldan is credited with flooring Marvin , but wasnt really a knockdown.
He had a great chin and i really hated him for beating my hero Tommy Hearns but i got over it ;D
ive met Marvin at 2 dinner speaches and hes a top guy :)

I am not sure something like that happens in alot of fights. Rarely do fighters force another guy to throw his best punch so he can take his confidence away. Not that Hagler wanted to get hit with the punch, but Marvin walked right in and he was hit hard. And he wobbled and was hurt but he stayed up and regrouped in seconds and threw punches even harder and since Hearns right hand was broken what could Hearns do? I do notice how swelled Hagler's face was after the 3rd round, so the fact that Hearns could have regrouped and landed jabs and boxed was a possibility- Marvin was cut and Hearns was so sharp with his jab and punches. Had the fight gone even to round 6 Marvin would have been all swelled up, but by that point Hearns was exhausted. Hagler relied on his middleweight strength and his determination. Hagler almost forced Hearns to throw the right hand and find out what would happen.

Re: Did Hagler ever hit the Canvas?
Thats why Hagler V Hearns is the most exciting high profile fight ever. Eubanks had a solid gin too, although he was knocked down by Benn (slip) and Galzaghe. A power puncher in Thompson could not knock him down.

Hearns wobbled him with that upper cut in the first round of their fight. It would have been interesting to see if Tommy could have finished the job if he didn't break his hand.

I liked Ali-Frazier more.

No, Ted, he hit the deck from a solid counter from argentine Juan Roldan seconds into the fight... And I believe he also struggled against Mustapha Hamsho but was knockdown only by Roldan. JCC was also caught in the way in by a fast counter by the Surgeon in the 11th, that and the two points taken from Chavez by R. Steele for borderline blows costed him the decision ( split decision and 1st loss)

Re: Did Hagler ever hit the Canvas?
Officially yes, it was ruled a knockdown. But Rodan actually pushed him down when he missed a punch and his arm more pushed him dowm

Watson floored Eubank and almost KO'd him. Eubank was out on his feet, got floored, got back up and immediately floored Watson with the fateful punch that left him in a come for several days and permanently damaged until this day.
It's a double tragedy in that the sad aftermath of the fight marred what was possibly the greatest and most brutal domestic showdown in British history.

Re: Did Hagler ever hit the Canvas?
Hagler had an amazing chin but common, you gotta give the "hardest man to put down" award to George Chuvalo. Guys like Hearns, Mugabi, Roldan, ect hit hard but you can't compare taking punches from them to taking punches from George Foreman, Joe Frazier, Muhammad Ali, Patterson, and other HW fighters and not going down. I mean the shots he took from Foreman without going down is just unreal, Chuvalo has any "best chin" award locked down IMO
-
Re: Did Hagler ever hit the Canvas?
Does anyone know why Hagler and Hearns did not do a re-match????? Those two would have made a great trilogy, although they would probabaly both be dead after the third fight?
-
Re: Did Hagler ever hit the Canvas?
Rarely do people want to fight Hearns, (Barclay needed the cash)Leonard avoided it because he knew he would get beat and only agreed because Hearns was vulnerable at the time (and how the judges scored it a draw I will never know)

The only real question I have about Hagler vs. Chuvalo is that Hagler was hit as he was being aggressive and in the middle of throwing his punches. And he still did not go down. Chuvala would be nailed but not as much as he was countering. Hagler was hit during exchanges where he was caught off guard and didn't go down with Hearns or Mugabi. Cannot get better than being hit by those guys.

The fight was going to happen. Hagler/Mugabi and Hearns/Shuler was scheduled for Nov. 1985 and Hagler got an injury in sparring and the card was postponed until March 10, 1986. Both won and they were going to fight in Nov. 1986.. But in May Sugar Ray Leonard announced he wanted to fight Hagler, and after Hagler took a little time to decided he signed to fight Ray. You cannot blame him. He had already fought Hearns so the idea to fight someone new who was also a legend was intriging to him. Had he fought Hearns and lost it would not have been good for his legacy. One thing about Hearns and Hagler. Hearns would have hit Hagler again clean in a rematch. And if his hand had held up Hagler would have been tested again big time. I am not sure Hagler wanted the Hearns fight really. I always thought he tasted the right hand and got through the fight with a win, but he did not want to fight Hearns again. Could he have beaten Hearns in a rematch? yeah since his style was a good matchup for Hearns and Marvin had more consistent stamina than Tommy. Somehow the Hagler style matches well with Hearns. Although, I would have been interested in seeing a more natural middleweight Hearns without a broken hand landing more leverage punches against a not as wild Hagler in a rematch. Would have been a fascinating fight and this time it would have probably gone into the later rounds with Hearns fighting a more normal pace.
