Roy Jones says Manny Pacquaio not a thinking fighter. Barrera is better as P4P
Roy Jones -in his recent interview with Maxboxing.com's Dough Fisher-- says that Manny Pacquaio is not a thinking boxer. He said Marco Antonio Barrera is the one and is of the pound for pound fame.
Hereunder is what the flamboyant Jones had mumbled:
"Like a lot of fans, he loves to watch Pacquiao fight, but being a boxer by nature he appreciates more of what Mayweather does in the ring.
“Manny is a real good fighter, but he’s more busy than skillful,” he said. “He’s the type of fighter that overwhelms other fighters with his heart and his conditioning, but even though he beat Marco Antonio Barrera, I don’t think he’s better than Barrera. I’d still say Barrera’s better, pound for pound, than Manny. To me Manny’s the busiest fighter in the world, but he’s not a thinking fighter and he’s not one to show boxing technique, and that’s not what being pound-for-pound is about.
“Pound-for-pound is not a popularity contest. It’s about being able to do it all in the ring – offensively AND defensively – at the highest level, and right now Floyd is the best at executing ring generalship.”
So what do you think folks, is the aforecited assessment-- from the once pound 4 pound great-- has some weights?

No Roy it's not about being popular its about beating the best guys out there and thats why Pac is number 2/3?
What a stupid comment by RJJ, I suppose he thinks he still should be number 1. ::**

Well yes i got the impression he was trying to say Pac is where he is because he is so popular, but i was stating no it's because he fights the best and beats the best ???

He didn't say Manny doesnt deserve to be there, he sayd he'd put Barerra above him pound for pond for offense AND defense. What he said abot Pacquiao is pretty accurate and not disrespectful at all

Re: Roy Jones says Manny Pacquaio not a thinking fighter. Barrera is better as P4P
I don't get what he said, even though pac beat mab. Mab is still better ???
ooh yea thats right, even though roy got himself ktfo his still better then anyone ;D
skills don't always win, the best in offense the best in defense and the ultimate best boxer can still lose. Guess to who?...to heart condition and determination.
pac is a living proft of heart condition and determination that overwhelms the greatest out there.
To say pac has no skill is false though, this should be accepted. nobody can throw a left straight like pac. he has speed stamina and combine that with his power, his not just a busy fighter with heart condition and determination. Pac is a GREAT FIGHTER.
pound for pound is about who beats who too, if someone proves to beat someone his clearly pound for pound better. how can someone be better then another from a lost???
i think roy said it wrong or got it twisted. Mab is a better boxer then pac; true, better defense; thats true too. but does it mean he'll beat pac? nope pac didn't just beat him, pac destroyed him.
See the thing is, its stupid to think, since someone is better at a catagory(for example defense) he'd beat someone whos weak at that catagory. Prejudicial!!!!!!!!!!
we've all heard it, floyd will easily beat pac because floyd is better at; defense, boxing.....uhh what else??? thats pretty much it. Prejudicial!!!!!!!!!!!
I think anyone who gives pac no chance at beating floyd is delusional. anything can happen lets be fair.

You had me until you stated that Pac could beat Mayweather.
Let me just say, Mayweather's lucky he doesn't have a Pac-man around near his weight.
Well ... he'd duck him like a Margarito. ;) Win or lose tomorrow, Tony has the b@lls to challenge dangerous contenders.
Yeah, I'm not a big Mayweather fan either.
But yeah.... There's a thinking fighter, who takes his time and executes with precision.
... and then there's the fighter who goes on instant instinct.
Sometimes the instinct beats out the thinker......... well all the time in my book. ;)

You don't get it?
Roy said that Marco has a better all around game then Pacquiao when it comes to offense and defense combined in the p4p. And I don't think anyone can disagree that. Or is Vernon Forrest just better then Shane Mosley now?

instinct is quicker then thinking, a fight is decided by mother nature. a fighter with the instinct to hurt, beats the thinker before the thinker executes. So why does it matter to anyone if pac isn't like a mab or floyd that is a thinker, when pac has a killers instinct. since pac isn't a thinker mab is better ??? doesn't make sense because instinct reactted twice already before thinking. That is why mab was overwhelm and all the others pac has face, they tried to figure him out, but trying and thinking is way to slow compare to the constant reaction of pacs hurtful instinct.
I do think pac can beat floyd, who is to say floyd will win if he really fights.
I have yet seen anyone beat pac easily, and yet have i seen floyd beat anyone like pacman?
I think either one can win, but the difference is pac wins by sheer force and floyd wins by making his oppenent lack the abbility to beat him. it would be interesting, lets be fair and leave it at that.

I'll agree mab is the better boxer, a better offense though? I'd disagree. pac has the better offense. Like I said, mab is the better boxer but pac p4p beats him everytime. Mab can be better at things but he'll never have what it takes to beat pac p4p. True fighters know this.
Back to Roy, we all know Roy is a mab fan ;D that pretty much explains his comment. If roy says mab is better then pac p4p, he should also say jmm and em are better then pac p4p. We all know how many times pac put those guys that are all better then him bare a$s on the canvas ;D
EVERYBODY PAC BEATS IS BETTER THEN HIM, BUT THEY WILL NEVER HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO BEAT HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Roy Jones says Manny Pacquaio not a thinking fighter. Barrera is better as P4P
Yea Roy PACMAN isnt a thinking fighter he a tough -fast-bsuy - walkin slugger who is a great fighter , he may not have much of a plan B but plan A is usually more than he needs. ;D ;D ;D ;D

All in all even though Pac KO'd Barrera and even if he does it again.....No he is not a better fighter then Barrera over all.....
EG would you rate Tarver over Jones??

Re: Roy Jones says Manny Pacquaio not a thinking fighter. Barrera is better as P4P
lol!
RJJ is trying hard to justify his KO losses by using these little dudes.
From his Pac-MAB comments, he's more emplying that he's still better than Tarver and Johnson eventhough he got KTFO fighting them.

Re: Roy Jones says Manny Pacquaio not a thinking fighter. Barrera is better as P
I thought P4P was about how good you are in comparison to all boxers, in and out of your weight class. Things factoring including who you've beat, your ability to move up or down in weight class to beat quality opposition, and not really anything to do with technique. Technique is just something to help you beat those opponents in and out of your weight class, relentless punching is a technique, it overwhelms opposition, just like sharp precise counter punching can offset an opponent. I still think Winky is has the second spot though. Pacquaio still is in the top three though. Roy was number one and wasn't nearly the complete package Toney was, Roy relied on reflexes and speed himself not pure boxing ability, and his opposition was questionable so he can't really use his argument.
-
Re: Roy Jones says Manny Pacquaio not a thinking fighter. Barrera is better as P
a win is a win, pacs win against MAB is still a win no matter how he won it its still a win. wow i got dizzy there!
-
Re: Roy Jones says Manny Pacquaio not a thinking fighter. Barrera is better as P4P
Seriously, would you say Glen Johnson and Tarver are better then Roy? Vernon Forrest is better then Shane Mosley, or Larry Donald and John Ruiz are better then Holyfield ???

Well he is prime for prime.

Re: Roy Jones says Manny Pacquaio not a thinking fighter. Barrera is better as P
Manny beat the heck out of MAB and I certainly think he will do it again but that does not mean he will have a greater legacy than MAB,those(beating a guy and having a better legacy) are 2 different things.
As for RJJ's argument,P4P is just an opinion.I'm not saying I agree or disagree but RJJ is more qualified than most of us and it's an interesting opinion. I guess he prefers fighters with technique rather than a guy that goes to war all the time. Fair enough.
-
Re: Roy Jones says Manny Pacquaio not a thinking fighter. Barrera is better as P4P
pound for pound prime for prime pac beats mab all the time. mab just never had what it took to beat pac, his best would need him to try and jab from a distance all 12 rounds and prime for prime pound4pound pac beats him before 12rounds.
its pacs power speed stamina relentlessness and that stubborn hard nose hit me if you can i'm gonna beat your ass style, that is too much for pacs oppenents prime for prime pound for pound!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
being a better boxer doesn't mean your gonna win, 12rounds is a long long night specially when your taking punches from pacman constantly and from all angles. Don't try to figure him out because right when your in the ring with him, all is too late already.
-
Re: Roy Jones says Manny Pacquaio not a thinking fighter. Barrera is better as P4P
I think personally Larry Merchant is p4p king; he beats my azzz everytime he opens that old croaker of his. He'd beat any fighter out there by annoying them to death. Does that count??
-
Re: Roy Jones says Manny Pacquaio not a thinking fighter. Barrera is better as P4P
man, i didnt expect that from rjj man. i cant imagine fighters think too much when they are fighting. i know boxers who have ring intellingence and fighters who have ring instinct. i think pac has more of ring instinct than ring intelligence. ring instinct is more important than ring intelligence coz instinct is reacting quickly in a certain situation. and i dont think you'll have enough time to think when you're getting pounded on your melon. and just like what Tyson used to say, you may have all the intelligence in the ring, you may have the best game plan but when i hit you and your hurt, your fight plan will just fly out of your head. roy thought he was smarter than tarver and johnson but when he got hit, his "smarts" went flying out of his head through his eyes.
so, rjj, u think ull have time to think while getting hit in the head?

Re: Roy Jones says Manny Pacquaio not a thinking fighter. Barrera is better as P
WOAH!!! Ok,I love watching Manny fight and give him as much respect as anyone but some of you Pac fans need to relax a bit more. RJJ is a legend and he was just expressing his opinion, that is all. Let's not start making Manny out to be invincible,he has lost and could very well lose again, anything is possible in boxing.
And I'd take the younger MAB over the younger(ie at lower weights) everyday of the week. MAB could war for 12 full rounds then and box too,he was the perfect machine,so good that he would be compared to the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez. Let's not demean this legend,I mean I've always been an EM more than an MAB fan but Marco is a legend too.
Manny may very well have beat him but MAB has by far and away the greater legacy.Let's not overhype Manny.

Ive only just become aware of this thread. A lot of the nonense I have heard doesnt surprise me. The above post is a welcome return to reality though.
:coolclick:, for that El Gamo
Barrera is one of my favourite fighters and to hear him being disrespected by ignorant posters on here who cannot seem to understand the validity of what Jones Jr said just gets under my skin.
People should actually take the time to sit and read through what he said and think about it for a few quiet moments. Jones said nothing controversial.
