Anyone here thinking Margarito should be speaking English?
Considering the fact that Tony was born in these here United States, should this kid have learned English? Pac man did it and so do did Cotto just to name a few champions who went there.
Ok I am watching the fight and I see Tony's complaint and I am just in round 2. Unfortunately for Tony the high volume of pitter patter punches and jabs are causing more of a smoke screen and added sound effects to fool the judges. To Williams credit, this does not take away the fact that he is keeping Tony from doing what he does in the same area of volume punching. (So he is basicly one upping Tony) Tony is blocking most and I do mean most of those shots. I guess the few that are landing are still more than the ones that Tony is landing which are just as far and in between as Williams' punches. I guess from what I am seeing now, Williams is fighting the smartest fight for himself, just staying far enough on the outside, taking advantage of his reach and speed and throwing pitter patters. (This kid is going to hard to beat but not impossible) I agree with Merchant when he said that not all of Williams' punches are thrown with the same intensity. Anyway.. I am going back to watching the fight. I am enjoying it.

Re: Anyone here thinking Margarito should be speaking English?
I don't think him speaking english is relevant to how he fights. I think he should try and he may be able to make more of a case the next time he feels he got robbed by stating his case rather than shaking his head at his opponent while the guy is shaking his hand at the end of the fight .. and/or turning up his nose at the decision... that just makes him look like a poor sport.
I think its just another fight where the guy who lost was frustrated and reaching for reasons he got outpointed that night. Magarito is probably used to be the bigger fighter. The reach factor was probably a big frustration. Add to the Williams's work rate and the fact that Williams tied up margarito on the inside. Williams was very beatable though. Especially when he wore himself out early. He was open for an overhand right all night and practically begging for it when he was stumbling out of fatigue.
Margarito did catch a lot of punches on the gloves but .. when offense and defense are at a stale mate, judges have to look at whos the aggressor.. or who's got the better workrate. Its like when morales said he got beat by Raheem because Raheem wouldnt fight him like a man. Yes, its true Raheem spent a lot of the night running and holding.... but your opponent isnt supposed to cooperate with you ... thats what makes it a competition.
Williams seemed to come out with a tactic of stick and move and throw lots of punches... rather than a plan of setting up margarito for something big ... or picking away at a weakness. Had Margarito solved the puzzled, got under Williams punches and worked the body before getting tied up...Williams could have found himself dead in the water with no plan much less a plan B. I also think Williams has reached the point where he will need a better corner soon. One that will help him work smarter instead of harder. If he keeps up that pace for every fight... His career will be shortlived.

Re: Anyone here thinking Margarito should be speaking English?
it doesnt really matter if margarito speaks english or not because we've probably heard the last from him unless somebody on versus or fox sports decides to start interviewing fighters that are on the undercard for the occasional david tua or yanqui diaz fights that they show every once in a while, because thats where hes gonna be from here on out

That is why they have promoters, to make the negotiations. That is when they really need to know English. I don't see that speaking a particular language is relevant to set the quality of a boxer, different if they were promoters. There are a lot of Latin boxers, among the greatest of all times, that did not know a word in English. And does this take points on their ranking????? I don't think so. But, I have to admit that speaking English may help to sell your self to some sectors of the public, specially with the horrible translations I am hearing lately.

Re: Anyone here thinking Margarito should be speaking English?
Good f'n question...you would think someone born in Torrance would speak ingles. Did he move as a child to Mexico? If not how the hell did he get through school? Did he go to school? I dont know but I'm curious a little now....

Re: Anyone here thinking Margarito should be speaking English?
Ofcourse Margo knows how to speak english. He's got thick accent and just didn't wanna sound funny in the eyes of many viewers.
JMM and MAB spoke broken english when Larry Merchant interviewed them after their bout...
Heck, even Pac doesn't speak english that well but he's trying his best and not ashame of it. Margo should do the same thing too especially knowing that he's an american born citizen.

Unless you really can't speak English, in which case then that's what good translators are for. And agreeing with my friend Puerto Rican Punch, I haven't seen much in the way of good translators in boxing lately.

Yeah, agreed.....Wladimir and Vitali and Golota and a number of other fighters know english and they use it sometimes better than others. If you know it, use it.
I mainly have issue with people who live their everyday lives in America without at least TRYING to learn english. I'm not a bigot but hey EVERYONE ELSE WHO IMMIGRATED HERE LEARNED IT.
Which is of course completely off topic but oh well

Re: Anyone here thinking Margarito should be speaking English?
I don't mind hearing Spanish, but I would rather have subtitles than hear the translator switch words around and leave out harsh remarks. I doubt it's possible to do this effectively, but it's just what I'd prefer.
I don't mind German, French, Russian, whatever...
I cannot stand hearing the African tribal languages used. C'mon who are they kiddin' with that crap. I know they're just mumblin nonsense to make it look good.

LMAO at that. Funny sh*t, BG.
But speaking about the translators, they bug the sh*t out of me. There's CERTAINLY better translators available out there than what they pass off as translators in these matches. They totally change the questions AND the answers. They leave out stuff, and probably can't remember half the sh*t that's just been said. Geeeeez!!

LOL.... He's a smart guy and knows a lot about boxing. But he wants to sound so poetic and dramatic that sometimes he just goes off the deep end. When that happens, he comes across as the town drunk.

LMFAO. You are so right. He was bumbling worse than ever the other night and kept looking at the ground. That guy is so far out to Disneyland. I understood Margarito better than him, lol.

Re: Anyone here thinking Margarito should be speaking English?
LOL! I know a little spanish and the translator was definately putting his spin on things. I cant stand the translating when they go in the corners, he uses that annoying voice like hes giving the advice, I think its that white haired guy, they use all the time. At least a translator should have a decent speaking voice.

Yeah... they should fire that guy. He brings nothing useful as a translator. Matter of fact, he's pretty annoying. The trainer's actually saying one thing... and he's saying another in his annoying voice. I say dump him.

That makes more sense, thanks for clearing that up for me. I know I sound retarded when I try and speak to a native spanish speaker but I try anyway, because thats how you get better.

Sorry, but this thread is beyond ridiculous.
Antonio Margarito has lived in Mexico since he was one week old. Who cares if he speaks English?
Who cares what language any fighter speaks or doesn't speak?

I dont care I was just baffled that he was born in Torrance and couldnt speak english...I didnt know he lived in Mexico growing up. It doesnt really matter to me what language they speak, but it shows respect to at least try. Even if its some half assed phrase someone wrote for him something to appeal to his American fans. If I was in a different country I would do it for PR purpose if anything else.

I just guessing here, but I bet he speaks it, but not well. Maybe like to use the interpretor, I know Duran did that for years.

Why is learning and speaking English so ridiculous? You are saying learning something new or foreign is ridiculous? You come to this country to fight and you were born here and yet you still don't dare to speak her language? That is stupidity if you ask me.
Who said Ray Torres was a shietty Translator? Me! and the rest of the Spanish/English speaking community thinks so too. Why have a translator if he ain't going to get it right?
If I went to Japan I would be like: Konnichiwa, watakushi-wa Danny_G, desu. ;D
BTW. Tony lives in Tijuana which is like right on the border of San Ysidro California. Even the dogs, cats and parrots speak a little English in Tijuana ;D

What does it matter if he was born here, he was back in Mexico when he was a week old!! That's like saying that if I was born when my parents were on vacation in China, then I should feel obligated to learn Chinese.
And what does it matter if he's fighting in the US? Should Lamon Brewster have conducted his postfight interview in German last week?
I'll always applaud someone for learning a second language, because it's an impressive thing to do, but Antonio Margarito is under no obligation to learn English. Personally, I'd rather have a fighter speak in his native language, where he can clearly express his thoughts thru an interpreter, instead of struggling to conduct an interview in a second language.

Never mind. Since you don't speak Spanish, you don't see the chop job these so called translators/interpreters are doing. It's borderline felonious. But no disrespect to you SweetPea. We can not always see things the same way.

Now you're making a different argument. If you think the interpreters are doing a bad job, then don't you think the point of your thread should be that HBO needs new interpreters... instead of blaming Margarito for not speaking English? I mean, is it Margarito's fault if the interpreters suck?

CC for a MONTH TO YOU. Look at Cotto interviews he doesn't said what he really wants to say but yes he is trying. When he speaks spanish he uses very distiguish vocabulary.

I believe it....there are assholes from all nations Puya, America only has a few if you can believe that ;D
I am not one of those Americans that goes and insults anyone else's culture (I know it's hard to believe but it's true) I try to learn about different cultures and different people and respect them in hopes that people will come to America and respect our culture.
I know a bunch of spanish, I learned some french while I was in Europe but it's different there as if I am not mistake most Europeans learn English in school but I still tried to use as much french as possible.
....can you believe we have people coming to America illegally and going to schools that tax payers pay for and they (the illegal immigrants) PROTEST (via hunger strike) to #1 strongarm congress into signing the Immigration Amnesty bill and HAD THAT BILL PASSED, these bastards who are here ILLEGALLY! would not have had to pay out of state tuition and would have probably been given minority status meaning they would have been given spaces in the colleges over regular citizens.
IMO that is a huge show of disrespect to America and it's citizens

Re: Anyone here thinking Margarito should be speaking English?
I don't understand what Tony's success in boxing has to do with speaking english. I thought you need only to hit your opponent with maximum leverage and not get hit to win fights, speaking to the ref, taunting you opponent with that lil "C'mon, yo bitch" and giving interviews to Larry Merchant doesn't win fights or shouldn't win fights. Please, don't tell me that Tony should fight every cinco de Mayo or have Mark Anthony singing "Mexicanos, al grito de guerra..." in englsh too? Stop with the non-sense, I believed Tony would break Paul's ribs and he didn't, was hit too many times and lost.Period. But Tony is still a very dangerous fighter to anyone including Floyd and Paul is still very hard to beat by anyone including Tony. God Bless, Respect but no non-sense, clowning in Pro Fighting plz?

Let me say this on that...
I hate the fact that the bill was not passed...but that bill was a turd in a toilet, IWO, from the start.
There are too many American companies making too much profit off of illegal immigrants for that bill to pass & too many of those American companies making too much profit off of illegal immigrants are lining to many senators & fat cat's pockets for that bill to pass in the first place.
Governments are so gotdam corrupt it makes me sick!

lmao learn an entire foreign language just because your visiting there? now thats funny.
Yes "english" speaking people who go to another country and get aggrivated at the non english speaking people is just silly. However lyle brings up a great point. You come to this country (usa) speak the god damn language. Pretty simple. You work in this country? Speak the god damn language.
My family moved to this country in 1976. my grandparents and their 11 kids all learned god damn english in 6 months. Its pathetic when i go to the DMV and i see 200 people all using the same god damn translator. Makes me wonder, you cant read/speak english, and your driving?
GOD DAMN!

Re: Anyone here thinking Margarito should be speaking English?
I'd rather hear a man speak in a language he is comfortable with than watch him struggle to complete a sentence.
Some of you believe that these men we call "warriors" should step out of the ring and be forced to speak English? You can't conquer them in the ring so you try to humiliate them outside of it?
Boxing is a sport not a fast food joint. The service they provide makes language irrelevant. We understand left hooks and knockdowns and that is all that matters. No one is trying to order a cheeseburger without pickles.

Re: Anyone here thinking Margarito should be speaking English?
Also, what about the men who fight all over the world?
Should O'neil Bell learn to speak french? Should Tony Thompson have brushed up on his german? No and no.
