Calzaghe vs. Kessler who wins?
In this the best Match in super middleweight history make you pick.
-
Re: Calzaghe vs. Kessler who wins?
Additionally I ask!
I wonder, Calzaghe is probably ranked as the top supermiddleweight on the all time rankings by most. If he were to lose to Kessler, would Kessler replace him on top?
opinions?
-
Re: Calzaghe vs. Kessler who wins?
Kessler by knock out around the 7th to 8th round.
-
Re: Calzaghe vs. Kessler who wins?
If an injury free Calzaghe hasn't slipped due to age then he wins a wide points decision.
However, if he's slowed any than the Dane does a Hatton on him (a la Kostya).

What do you mean ?? Hatton beat Kostya by swarming Kessler won't do that he will box and i find it out for any boxer to really outbox Calzaghe however you a right about the injury's which i am worried about aswell but if Calzaghe has no problems with his hands then he wins decision but problem is i actually think he will break his hands so im going to have to go with Kessler by decision based on that.
-
Re: Calzaghe vs. Kessler who wins?
So you agree with me then???
If Joe is slow/old then Kessler is going pressure him until he wins.
Please don't think I meant that Joe is going to retire at the end of the 11th round. It was a general analogy meaning that the younger fighter will overcome the older fighter if the older guy has slipped somewhat even though he was unbeaten and dominant in recent fights. Age can catch up with you.
Try not to be so literal, ICB....

No offense hear mate. Calzaghe is good, but best supermiddle ever? Probably top five but no way he is better than RJJ at supermiddle.
-
Re: Calzaghe vs. Kessler who wins?
This is difficult. While I am not saying that a prime Calzaghe would beat a prime Jones (although you never know), Joe C's record at SuperMiddle is much better than RJJ.
Jones only made 5 defenses, although he beat Toney for the title. Saying that, Toney was DRAINED and didn't beat another prime opponent for NINE years (yes he didn't beat anyone until Jirov).
Calzaghe has made loads of defences even though they have been against mainly pony opposition.
Jones is a better fighter but Calzaghe is a better Suppermiddleweight

Re: Calzaghe vs. Kessler who wins?
Calzaghe has accomplished more than anyone in the history of the SMW div. He's the face of the div.
As for as the thread goes. I have to be honest & say that I will save my vote & opinion for a little later. You fellas across the pond will probably be better at disecting this one than me.
I have only seen Kessler fight Andrade (saw some highlights. but no other live fights from beginning to end). He's VERY impressive.
I have seen Calzaghe plenty enough to know what he's about. He's the real deal. Everyone talks about him slapping with his punches. And it does appear that he does do this alot. But he has to be the hardest damn slapper in the world. The way he slapped bruises, knots, & lacerations across 32 of 43 guys that he took out.
It's a great fight for boxing. I will ride the fence on this one for a while. I will break it these to down & do my best to compare the stylistic match up to give my prediction. But as for now, the jury is still out on this one for me.

Re: Calzaghe vs. Kessler who wins?
Calzaghe to premeturely stop him. I think the outcome of this fight is gunna be extremely controversial.

I'm going Calzaghe, Just more exp all round. But Kessler will have a few moments I'm sure and be champ one day, But he will not beat Calzaghe. I would not be surprised if we have another Lacy like type fight happen.

Re: Calzaghe vs. Kessler who wins?
A wide UD win for Calzaghe.Joe is up for this and we are gonna see the best of him again.

Re: Calzaghe vs. Kessler who wins?

CC right back ;D
I have an unfair reputation in terms of my picks. I mainly blame Bilbo for this and perhaps the consequence of some of my picks! ;D
Ive always maintained that when it comes down to the fighters im usually posting about that I actually am pretty spot on.
This fight is one such fight. ;)

Yes, because Kessler has a bad habit of losing a lot of rounds and Calzaghe picks rounds easily against poor opposition.
Kessler by TKO. Calzaghe's corner will stop the fight between 10-11 as he is so much behind on points and because they realize that he has no chance of catching Kessler with a bomb.

You really think Kessler will rack up the rounds against Calzaghe?!
I just dont see it.
Kessler really reminds me of Veit but with more power.

No need for such silly and pointless propaganda. I dont think anyone has been impressed by that.

Re: Calzaghe vs. Kessler who wins?
Although I'll be cheering for Kesler (more like I'll be cheering against Frank Warren), I think if his hands hold up and he doesn't get old overnight Calzaghe wins a UD (somewhere in the 116-112 range).
If his hands don't hold up, I still see Calzaghe eeking out a SD or MD, partially because the fight is in his backyard.
Calzaghe broke his hand against Manfredo, a fight where he barely landed any serious blows, I'd assume they'll probably brake again at some point in the Kessler fight as well, as JC is gonna have to land some serious leather on Kessler.
-
Re: Calzaghe vs. Kessler who wins?
Joe performs those slappy combinations for show and for the crowd to get into it.. i'm sure it does a bit of damage but on a fighter on his level, i see Kessler just catching him with a bomb while Joe is throwing one of those combinations.. Eubank did it in there fight and i feel that if there were 10-20 seconds left in that fight, it would've been interesting after that punch. I don't see a Lacy/Calzaghe outcome because Kessler is much faster than Lacy.. Lacy barely landed anything and was just completely outclassed/outboxed..
Plus Kessler is a pretty cautious fighter, so i think that if he has to pressure Joe he'll do it quite cautiously.. I predict Calzaghe scoring most of his points with shots from within a clinch, and by holding kessler with one hand and hitting him with the other.. But the question is if those will effect Kessler and if they will be enough to wear him down throughout the fight.. With that being said, if Kessler can find his range and connect it will motivate Joe to try to fight with desperate speed causing him to get careless and get caught with a bomb.. KO Kessler.

This is a strange one because the 168lbs version of Roy Jones is the greatest boxer I have seen in my lifetime but if I was to do a table of the greatest SMW of all time I think I would have to place Calzaghe on top due to the fact he stayed there most of his career and made so many defences of his (WBO i know) title, whereas Jones' spell at the weight was relatively short. Also Sven must get an honourable mention!
Back to the original point though. I didn't vote on this poll originally but I would have voted Kessler and been wrong so I've voted him anyway!

Kessler was the most talented pure boxer Calzaghe ever faced, he combines speed, power and skill. Kessler is one of the top young boxers around. I saw him KOd Beyer with one shot, he gave Andrade an incredible boxing lesson. Kessler's brand of clean crisp performance is something I'm not seeing from any other young boxer at the higher weights right now
To those who say that Joe fans only hype Kessler to make Joe look better, I say that while that may be true in some cases, its mostly wrong, because thinking that way presupposes that Kessler isn't actually any good. He is, he's the top guy at SMW and proved it by taking everyone elses belts up until he met Joe. You only have to look at him to see the amount of potential he has and what a difficult prospect he would be for anyone at SMW/ LHW
