Yes, that was when Barrera was a serious brawler.
He could take it and dish out either way.

Re: Marco Antonio Barrera vs. Kennedy Mckinney

Re: Marco Antonio Barrera vs. Kennedy Mckinney
One of my favourite fights. A war. VD,you are one lucky man to have seen this live!
-
Re: Marco Antonio Barrera vs. Kennedy Mckinney
Fantastic fight. Round 8 sums up what Barrera is all about...Mckinney seems to have control of the fight, jabbing well....and boom...Barrera strikes and nearly finishes him. The man has been involved in some classics. A legend.

The buzz was incredible. It was almost drug like. There was a lot of animosity too. Barrera and Mckinney had both talked a lot of shit before the fight. I felt bad for Mckinney. He took a beating. The body shots Barrera hit him with were sick. I've never heard body shots that loud. Over and over. I wouldn't doubt if Mckinney pissed blood for month after the shots he took. I give him credit. He had heart. His big right hand kept him in the fight through out the night. But it wasn't enough.

They were $100 dollar seats. They weren't ringside but they were good seats. But I don't think the seating matter. Those body shots were that fuckin loud. I think everybody heard them

I went to a couple of shows at the Great Western Forum. I saw two Barrera fights there. The Mckinney fight and when he destroyed Maui Diaz in about a round. The Marquez bothers coming up fought there. I saw some of there fights. I saw the 2nd fight between Daniel Zaragoza and Paul Banke. Which was an outstanding fight. Barrera, Zaragoza and the Marquez brothers had a lot of followers. So the place would get full. But nobody packed the Forum up like Jorge Paez. When he fought. The place would get packed. I saw 3 of his fights there. Yeah I miss them forum fights. My uncle would always be up in there. He's the one I use to roll with there.

I remember those(recorded all that). Marquez and Barrera both came up there. I don't know if you remember, but the Forum used to have those tourneys by weight class, best tournaments ever in my book.
That Zaragoza/Banke fight was good, too bad about Banke! It was sad how his story panned out.

Re: Marco Antonio Barrera vs. Kennedy Mckinney
Did anyone see the final press conference for this fight ?
Mckinney was doing a speech and Barrera was standing beside him , then all of a sudden Barrera punched Mckinney square in the face ;D It was just like what he did to Morales
Barrera is a legend for doing that and still get a reputation for a dignified classy fighter which he is .
Ive seen the fight countless time. This is why Barrera is the best fighter of his era . No question !

Yep, this is in my collection a very good fight, nice one for bringing it to the Forums attention. Have A CC from me.

Re: Marco Antonio Barrera vs. Kennedy Mckinney
That fight turned me into a Barreraholic & I am still hooked. can't wait for pac-barrera II
-
Re: Marco Antonio Barrera vs. Kennedy Mckinney
Yeah I've seen the fight too (live telecast on HBO). Prolly one of the greatest fights in boxing history. Barrera-McKinney going at it, none stop!
I just wish MAB could give Pac the same competition.
-
Re: Marco Antonio Barrera vs. Kennedy Mckinney
Wasn't Mckinney in olympic team with Roy Jones seem to remember that and as for this fight wow what a war i remember Barrera pounding him then Mckinney coming out of nowhere to score a knockdown Mckinney done well at the start using his jab then it just turned into amazing war i think in 1 of the rounds they both threw over 100 punches or something i think it was the 6th round.

VD, I've mentioned this before but my uncles are the ones who got me into boxing. They never missed a fight they also attended fights out here in L.A. at the Forum, The Olympic Aud., Convention Center in Anaheim, L.A. Sports Arena and other venues.....
It wouldn't surprise me if you and your uncles might have crossed paths with my uncles at one point in the 80's/early 90's fights here in L.A.

If Pac was around at that weight at athat time Barrera would have done worse to him . Pac was getting sparked in 3 rounds by nobodies . No way would he have lasted with a prime Barrera that we saw vs Mckinney .
-
Re: Marco Antonio Barrera vs. Kennedy Mckinney
Great great fight. Haven't watched it in awhile. Unbelievable action throughout!!!
-
Re: Marco Antonio Barrera vs. Kennedy Mckinney
I remember one funny moment from that fight...
After one of the rounds, MAB's cornerman is yelling at him, "You've got to throw more punches, you can't just sit around and let him get off!!!"
Then when they cut back to the HBO guys, Lampley says, "They're yelling at him to throw more punches? He just threw 117 punches in that round!!"

Prime vs prime, Pac would KO both Barrera and McKinney. MAB and McKinney were going at it, trading punches round after round and they couldn't inflect serious damage to each other. :-\
Anyone who would trade punches with Pac will find himself KTFO. Capisce?

Pac and Morales traded punches round after round in their first fight. How'd that one go again?

Exactly! Some Pac fans probably think he could knock out heavyweights. Lets see...his three biggest fights are Barrera, Morales, and Marquez. He beat an unprepared and unfocused Marco. He lost to a prime Morales in their first fight and then defeated a near shot Erick in the second fight and a completely shot Erick in their third fight. He had a draw against Marquez. The rest of his resume...nothing spectacular. Don't get me wrong...Pac is a tremendous athlete and an exciting fighter...but way too many people gave WAY too much credit for the Barrera fight and the last two Morales fights.

Pac traded punches with one eye. He got cut from accidental headbutt, not from Erik's punch.
It went that way. ;)

I actually have a great deal of respect for Manny and think he has achieved a tremendous amount but ignorant posts like this leave a bitter taste in my mouth.
The utter arogance of your final couple of sentences says it all.
Barrera did lose to Manny. But look at the style Barrera was exhibiting against McKinney. It was a world apart from how he fought Pac. Dont be so quick to make judgements. Prime on Prime Barrera has a very decent chance of beating Pac.
-

Everyone can take side and be bias sometimes. You're starting to sound like a sore loser fan.
You got your own opinions and I got mine too. I aint' twisting somebody's arm to take my word.

Re: Marco Antonio Barrera vs. Kennedy Mckinney
Amazing, somehow, some way,a Pac nuthugger managed to bring Manny into a thread which has ZERO to do with Pacquiao. Hey,I've always been more of a Morales fan but if Manny ever stepped into the ring with the MAB from this fight and the first Morales fight,I think Manny would get an ass whooping. He (Manny)never fought anyone as tough as the 122 MAB.
And as for the statement "Anyone who would trade punches with Pac will find himself KTFO" ,tell that to the world renowned Midgeon Singsurat, the devestating Rustico Torrecampo. And of course,Morales the first time. :D
I really really like Manny,he's great for the sport and a super fighter to watch but some of you Manny fans need to relax. Stop taking everything to heart and realise the world does not revolve around Manny. There is nothing wrong with nut hugging,we all do at some point but there have to be limits! Jeez ;D ;D ;D
