Poll: So Who Does Hopkins fight next?
This isn't who should he fight, it's who will he fight.
A couple notes:
I didn't include Winky because he said this was only a one-time thing at this weight.
I did not list Taylor because they have already fought twice, and there is usually very little interest in a third fight when one guy won both of the first two fights.
I didn't include the big heavyweights like Wlad/Peter, because they're not realistic options, there's just too big.

Re: Poll: So Who Does Hopkins fight next?
Oh! dear god, the man needs to retire. He should have called it quits after the Tarver fight now that would have been going out in style.
One things for damn! sure I'm sick and tired of their fights, B-Hop, WInky, JT all 3 can fall of the face of this sport and no one would miss them. You'd think for one in their career they'd take a chance and throw some real leather but no, that would be asking to much of them..... :(
Damn! shame really cause if all 3 would have really come to fight in their engagements we would have had some great fights.... :(

If that turns out to be a good fight it'll be because of Pavliks style, he might bring out the more aggressive fighter in JT.

I'm surprised by this response Mick. The Taylor-Wright fight had a lot of action and both guys threw hard punches.

There was some action but at the same time I saw them hold back.
I guess what I'm saying is they could have all given us a bit more on their fights.

Re: Poll: So Who Does Hopkins fight next?
I'm saying the winner of the calzaghe fight. It's the biggest fight out there and while i do like his chances at grabbing a heavyweight belt, he just shouldn't do it because it'd be unfair for everyone else who is considered for the boxing HOF in the future.

Re: Poll: So Who Does Hopkins fight next?
Id love to see Hopkins hand Calzaghe a beating >:)

Re: Poll: So Who Does Hopkins fight next?
I'm surprised Mick,I've never seen you so scathing of B Hop/Winky :D I am about to see the fight now so I'll let you know what I think.
I think he'll fight RJJ. I'd muc much prefer a JC fight because I think JC would beat his ass and cement his own legacy but those 2 negotiating is a pain in the ass and I don't know if they'll be able to work things out. RJJ does not have as much pulling power as he used to so B Hop can take more control over negotiations, something which was always a stumbling block in the past.

I really dont want to see a fight with Calzaghe. A few years ago, of course. But not now. Hopkins just beat someone who is really at his best at 154 pounds and had to do that at 170. It was a good win for Hopkins but I would leave it at that. Calzaghe is all wrong for BHop at this late stage.
Retirement is the favourable option. If not, then a final fight with Jones Jr. And then for goodness sake. Retirement please! :-\ ;D

Yeah but on the other side of the coin,he just beat a P4P top 3 guy,and he also beat the man at lightheavy. If he keeps winning,I don't see why the JC fight can't be made and especially as so many fans think B Hop would win,I think it would make for a great fight but like I said, the chances of it happening are slim.
I think we both said that WInky was silly for taking this fight and I think it showed. Win,lose or draw,at 33/34,he is going to have this one fight, and have to lose allll that weight to go back to 154/160. It's not good for his body especially at this age and I would much rather have seen him fight JT again.

I agree with what you are saying. If a Hopkins: Calzaghe fight makes sense for both parties then that is an option. Ive always been a supporter of Hopkins and likewise a a huge Calzaghe fan too. On a personal level and this is me talking from the Hopkins perspective. I dont think he can beat Calzaghe at this stage. So I really dont want him to fight Joe. A few years ago this is an entirely different case. Hopkins would have had every chance of hanging with Calzaghe and perhaps winning. Now it proves nothing. Others will differ on their feeling on how the fight might go and perhaps that a reason for the fight to happen. But I think both fighters have different fish to fry now.
Since the second Taylor fight, Hopkins career path has been scripted very well. He went up and took out Tarver. He bypassed SMW altogether. This does raise some questions for me. Admittedly beating Tarver was also a swipe at Jones Jr who beat Hopkins but lost twice to Tarver. Next comes Winky. Yes, WInky is a top P4P fighter but he has been lured up to a weight that Hopkins is comfortable with and Wright himself has never fought before. 10 pounds is almost a jump of 2 weight classes. This was a pretty close fight and I wasnt sure which way it would go because of the variables. Hopkins was aware of those variables at play and fighting WInky at 170 was obviously an advantage.
If Hopkins were to fight Calzaghe then it would be a move away from the calculated path he has been following of late and would be a mistake. I dont think its a path Hopkins will take.
Hopkins has nothing left to prove. A farewell fight against Jones would be more than enough for me.

Re: Poll: So Who Does Hopkins fight next?
If Hopkins defeats the winner of Calzaghe v Kessler, he goes down as the conqueror of the 168-175 post RJJ/Tarver era.

See,that's my thinking too. Why would he not want that?

You make good points and I agree with most of them except the B Hop-JC fight. It would enhance his legacy even moreso and also(I'm more of a JC fan),it'll give JC a fan to cement his. I totally agree though, B Hop knew exactly what he was doing when he made Winky jump 2 weight classes but Winky made the mistake of taking the bait.
BTW,I wonder what kind of numbers this did?

Re: Poll: So Who Does Hopkins fight next?
Bernard Hopkins is such a great fighter. He is winning fights on experience and wisdom. Not on skill but on wisdom at this point. He is 42 and he is still fighting well. That is amazing. This is much more impressive than Foreman in 1991 since Foreman lost all his big fights except for landing a punch on weak chinned light heavyweight Moorer. Hopkins is beating guys at a division where skills matter. Foreman was doing it on his huge size and power. Hopkins is amazing.

Re: Poll: So Who Does Hopkins fight next?
I'd like to see him go after the Calzaghe/ Kessler winner!
-
Re: Poll: So Who Does Hopkins fight next?
It would be poetic justice if he got a shot a Calzaghe if he beats Kessler. If Kessler wins I'd rather see him rematch Roy Jones Jr.
-
Re: Poll: So Who Does Hopkins fight next?
I think he'll fight Jones next, he's talked before about wanting to revenge that loss. I think he SHOULD fight the Calzaghe-Kessler winner though. And I would really love it if he just retired.
-
Re: Poll: So Who Does Hopkins fight next?
If it isn't Calzaghe, then I really think he should just retire...beating Roy now means very little and it wont be a fan friendly fight...I think Kessler and Pavlik are both bad matchups for Bernard at this stage in his career and lack that "name" for legacy purposes. I don't know if I'd pick Joe against Bernard...I think of Joe as a boxer, and I just don't know if he can outbox Bhop for 12 rounds.
-
Re: Poll: So Who Does Hopkins fight next?
if he can't fight Calzaghe then he should retire. he probably shouldn't even fight calzaghe.
-
Re: Poll: So Who Does Hopkins fight next?
I don't know who Bernard will fight next, most likely Joe Calzaghe. I love Bernard Hopkins, hes' a great fighter, and bad MF, but from what I saw Saturday night, Roy Jones Jr. could very well beat either Bernard OR Winky Wright RIGHT NOW. Thats IF Roy's head is in the right place and he lets his hands go like he's been doin against Ajamu and Hanshaw. I would love to see a rematch between Roy Jones jr. and Bernard Hopkins for the Light Heavyweight championship of the world, not sayin B-hop couldn't win, cus he could, but I'd have to favor Roy with his still blazing hand speed and pop.
-
Re: Poll: So Who Does Hopkins fight next?
I voted the winner of Calzaghe vs Kessler but my answer needs an *.
I think that he should fight Calzaghe if Joe is able to get thru Kessler. Kessler is very good but I don't beleive that the hype/anticipation for that fight would be close to a Calzaghe vs Hophins showdown.
-
Re: Poll: So Who Does Hopkins fight next?
To be honest, hopkins looked slow throwing punches, and slow trying to avoide them, he is 43 going on 43 and that is natural, depedning how Joe looks agaisnt kessler, i just can't see hopkins being able to avoide the non stop punching of calzaghe, or even get alot of good shots off...
Kessler to would hurt him bad i think, its nowt to be ashamed of really, he is geting on, you losse things as you age... i don't think hopkins can carry on fighting people around his natural weight much longer, hes gunna get hurt or knocked out, tyhat would be a shame to see...
