Not Impressed With Andre Berto.....
I don't know if it was the pressure of the ESPN headliner like Atlas said or the fact Rivera just knew enough to frustrate him but I was not impressed with Berto tonight....
All he did was headhunt and looked gassed out come round 9......I hope this was a good learning experience for him or he will fizzle out soon....Anyone see a smaller version of Jeff Lacey here?
-
Re: Not Impressed With Andre Berto.....
I thought his defense looked horrible. Plus getting dropped by Rivera. I wasn't impressed
-
Re: Not Impressed With Andre Berto.....
The two hot prospects, not looking to clever right now Berto and Kahn have some work to do.
-
Re: Not Impressed With Andre Berto.....
Nothing to the body, and when he had him hurt he didnt have the power to finish
Not impressed at all,it was a workmanlike performance
-
Re: Not Impressed With Andre Berto.....
I think you guys are being harsh. I've yet to see the fight, which watch it later but remember,Rivera is a rugged tough fighter who gave another prospect,Joel Julio all he could handle. Minus the knockdown,Berto won easily, didn't he? He's still young and learning, although I've heard he was telegraphing his punches? Were you guys not impressed by his offensive arsenal? he's facing David Estrada next.

Well put. People do like to spank the prospects as soon as they face a stiff barney.
Remember Ali got decked by Banks, Tyson only beat Tillis cos of the knockdown and many other good & great fighters had to pass the litmus test. He got decked by an experienced campaigner who has beaten fighters with a combined 90-7 in 4 of his last 5 wins - and knocked out three of those.
-
Re: Not Impressed With Andre Berto.....
I am watching the fight and I agree,Berto was not impressive but you have to remember, this is a jump in class. Also,I think the cameras, the desire to impress made him over eager and so did Rivera holding on the inside, not letting him work. His jab was excellent when he used it and he has good handspeed and power.
On the other hand, there were flaws. The knockdown brings up question marks over his chin and concentration. I thought it was more than a flash knockdown and the long ass break in between rounds tells me may be he was bothered by it. I'd love to ahve seen what would have happened had the knockdown happened earlier.
I would love to see Berto v Quintana, his movement seems really robotic. He reminds me a bit of Lacy, good power etc but some chinks. He's still youg though and can iron them out. I'd also love to see him v someone who can bang,Joel Julio maybe? I want to see his chin checked.
Not a bad perfomance but far from brilliant imo. And let's not forget,Zab Judah,a blwon up WW blew out Rivera in 4 rounds I think.

Re: Not Impressed With Andre Berto.....
Andre Berto is just another US hype job.
-
Re: Not Impressed With Andre Berto.....
Berto won every round easy except for the flash knockdown ,if you saw the fight you know he wasnt hurt. All I can say if he is not a good youg prospect who is?? I mean really name a young up and commer that you think is good if Berto is not????
BTW ,Im Berto's promoter he just dosent know it because he dosent pay me. ;D ;D ;D

Re: Not Impressed With Andre Berto.....
The ref sure was taking his sweet time while counting. I seen this fight being ready made to fix from then on. Had the fight turned, they still would have gave that fight to Berto, just like they did with Kid Diamond. Berto does have a suspect chin. My boy Cotto's chin is a lot better than that ;D
I don't know if Berto was all that hurt but it's kind of odd that the glove happen to tear just in that instance ??? Right out of the Dundee play book ;D I hate to dissapoint everyone but Zab Judah would tear Berto's head off with the sneaky upper cut and thus, Berto is not all that I thought he was. Sorry. I still like the kid.

Cant Blame Burto because of his corners tricks. He wanted to ritght back out if you were looking ,he kept pulling away.He wasnt hurt .
Its funny nobody wants to go out on a limb and suport the young untested guys. All I hear is I like Gayweather ,Oscar Delaloser , and Cotto (I cant think of anything with Cotto's name) plus I like him. Heck people still wont shut up about Tyson , good grief that era has been over for a long time.

Ok, well next time I will start a thread about how great Peter Manfredo Jr. is just for you.
I did not say that I did not like Berto, I just said, I thought he was more of a dustruction machine than he actually is. Cotto would eat him up. Will you argue that?

I heard about the glove and it does sound dodgy.

Peter LOL . I would definatly agree that Cotto would beat Berto at this point. I would also agree that Berto is over hyped but what young undefeated isnt .I still think he is better than Lacy, another over hype.

Re: Not Impressed With Andre Berto.....
I always wonder how knockout guys like Berto respond when they can't get somebody out. And I wasn't too impressed with what he did last night. Why do some of these power punchers turn into just head hunters, Berto's trainers should show him film of JCC and how he went to the body at least once with almost every combo. About his chin, it better not be a huge problem cause he's not unhittable by any means.
Not like he's a bum now, I still think he's a better prospect than Julio for example, but he needs some work. If he's fighting David Estrada next than Estrada's a very live underdog.

I for one am a fan of some prospects, like Juan Manuel Lopex and JC Chavez, Jr. The two that come to mind that I'm not impressed with are Berto and Julio. They just seem like they have too many flaws.

Re: Not Impressed With Andre Berto.....
i had to raise my eyebrow for this later in the fight he look sloppy
i dont thinkhe's hype though
-
Re: Not Impressed With Andre Berto.....
Sorry, the guys supposed to be a slugger,he's throwing nothing but headshot, that are landing,he has the guy hurt in every round after the 7th,and he cant finish him off
Id worry if I was a Berto backer

Re: Not Impressed With Andre Berto.....
Both Berto brothers Andre and Edson hit the canvas in 1 night.
Edson got KTFO by Noon with the vicious knee strike in the face.

Completely agree here, I think some people are being a bit too much on this fight.
I will say he didn't look as impressive as he has looked on other nights. Last night hes defense was a bit sloppy and he appeared to gas out in the 7th rd were he took a break and also in the 10th were he got hit with a lot of punches.....
He did however win convincingly and was very close to having the ref. jump in and stop the fight. Many times the ref. appeared to be stoping the fight cause he would look closely at Rivera.

Not only the count but did you see that all the time he got when they were taping his glove?
What a crock of shit! that ref. did a piss poor job in that fight IMO.....
I wanna see Berto vs. Julio.... 8)

Well let me see.....
Julios jab has been working really well for him, Berto likes to be very aggressive and blast out his opponents.
Julios learned that you can't blast everyone out, I'm not sure if Berto has learned that yet.
I think Berto comes in and just man handles Julio early on, Julio weathers the storm and begins to keep Berto off with his jab and begins to land his mone shot the straight righ hand. Julios punches are more straight and IMO he would make contact with Berto 1st, Berto has the looping punches and IMO would get caught with Julios straight right hand.
I think Julio stops Berto late rds. or UD. But I would def. favor Julio....

Everybody whose views I respect seems to think more highly of Julio than I do. I don't see much there ??? Maybe its just me.
He's got a bit of power but I don't see much in speed, footwork, punching technique, just skills in general.
I think the only thing Julio's got in his favor is experience but not by that much. I think Berto would be too fast for Julio, and stop him mid to late.

I have to be honest I agree with you, I don't really see much in either of them. Which Peterson brother is it that is the slick boxer? Well either Lamont or Anthony, whichever one isn't the puncher. Imo he'll go further than both Julio and Berto as will the other two Andres'.
I don't really see Berto or Julio doing anything at welterweight to be honest. Guys like Mosely and Floyd, probably Zab and maybe Collazo and Quintana are all too slick. Williams I think would just completely overwhelm them and Margarito, Cotto and Cintron knocks them both out.
I don't see either getting any further than Miranda really.

Have to agree with you there. Not because of the fact Zab beat Rivera the way he did but that sneaky uppercut that you mentioned and that.
Berto is offensive minded and he reminds me of Shane Mosley a little, the coming back Shane mosley before the Vargas fight.
When all Shane would do is double pump that jab and lead a right hand behind it and sometimes come over with hooks and etc. But he needs to work on his defense. Berto looks great until someone can take his punches. What I don't like is I saw no plan B from Berto, he won the fight but be made it more difficult not switching up, he should have said to himself "Alright I need a sledgehammer to dent this guy's chin, lets try the body"
Berto isn't ready for the top guys right now, he was everyone's top prospect but Bravo and Rivera are two completely different fighters.
I think I would like to see Berto and Julio fight next

I'd like to see either in with Alfonso Gomez, personally I think he has a good chance at upsetting both of them. Would be close either way I think.

I think Berto has something of a chance, but I don't give Julio a chance. I think Berto's a more skilled guy than Miranda. I never really bought into the hype on Miranda although if I remember right you thought even less of him so guess you were right.
But all those names right now beat Berto. Who knows, in a year or two he might be able to beat a Quintana or Collazo. But not sure about that. Julio, I just don't see much of a future really for him.

IMO Berto might have a future but from what I saw last night I can't see what all the hype was about....
Not saying the kid is an overrated no body who will get starched and fade off into no mans land once he fights a prime guy but....From all the talk his camp and management give off you would think this kid was the second coming of AAron Pryor

Yeah wasn't that at a convienient time ::**................
IMO Berto might have a future but from what I saw last night I can't see what all the hype was about....

Well Rivera was his first real test and he barely passed. Rivera can crack but hes basically an opponent to make bigger names look good. But he made Berto look beatable. I think Berto will do ok but I dont see him being a real force in the division, at least as of now.

I'd go with Berto.
I have to ask....Where do you get the Peterson brothers out of any of that ???
;D I'm not totally sure who the two Andres are either
LOL I think he was talking about Berto's brother who fights MMA.....I think ???....I was lost when the Petersons were brought into the topic...I even read it three times to make sure I didn't miss anything...
I think the two Andres are Berto and Ward.

Re: Not Impressed With Andre Berto.....
yea i'm glad to see that i'm not the only one that thinks that Berto looked pretty much like shit last night, if he doesn't rebound from this performance in his next fight i'm gonna go as far to say that he was all hype, imo he shouldn't have won last night, he should have been dq'd with the ploy his corner did last night, the whole taking off his glove stunt to give him time to recover was disgraceful

Ah I see my posts caused some confusion.
Ok the Peterson brothers reference was because along with Berto and Julio they are Americas other great prospects, however Berto and Julio get more attention. I mentioned the slick boxer of the two because I feel out of all these prospects he has the tools to go the furthest. However HBO and boxing fans in general like the KO guys hence Berto and Julio get more coverage.
As for who the two Andres were, I meant Ward and Dirrel, two other young American prospects who both have the boxing skills to advance far.
I just feel that of all the prospects, even though Berto and Julio are touted the most, it is in fact the lighter punching (and thus less interesting to the tv companies) Peterson brother along with Ward and Direll who are likely to be futrue world champs and possible p4p stars of the future.
I really don't see that happening at all with either Berto or Julio.
Hope that clears everything up :)

Re: Not Impressed With Andre Berto.....
Crap, I missed that fight. I wouldnt jump to conclusions on Berto off of this one performance. It was a significant step up for him, this next one if he is fighting David Estrada will be more revealing. I think he just got his first wake-up call. Hopefully he takes a few things from the fight and trains harder on his endurance.
