Is Floyd Mayweather The Most Textbook Skilled Fighter Since Sugar Ray Leonard ??
Sorry for the Mayweather threads but just thinking about this and i believe he is even though Roy is probably one of my favorite fighters but he wern't very textbook he was unorthdox.
But there are other fighters like.
Meldrick Taylor
Pernell Whitaker
Ricardo Lopez ect
Which is very debatable whats your thoughts ??
-
Re: Is Floyd Mayweather The Most Textbook Skilled Fighter Since Sugar Ray Leonar
I would say that Pernell was a more skilled fighter than SRL. SRL was more athletically gifted than Pernell but not as skilled defensively IMO.
Meldrick was very skilled but more hittable than Pernell or Floyd.
And Lopez was very good but I would say that Floyd's the most skilled fighter since Pernell.

Whitaker and Mayweather are very close i would say Whitaker is slighty better on defensive but really there isn't much difference but Mayweather is a shade quicker and hits harder.
The chin department we can't say because Mayweather has never really been hit and stamina is debatable aswell but Mayweather is gym rat he could easily go 15 rounds imo.

Re: Is Floyd Mayweather The Most Textbook Skilled Fighter Since Sugar Ray Leonard ??
Defensively I think Floyd is the best on that list, but as an all round fighter I think Leonard is better.

I wouldn't include Meldrick Taylor in this list. He was an exciting fighter and very talented, but there's a reason he never reached the heights of the other guys listed... he wasn't as good.
As for Leonard/Whitaker/Mayweather....
Leonard had by far the most power. Power is what saved him against Thomas Hearns in their first fight, on a night when he was being completely outboxed.
Whitaker is the best defensively of the group, although Floyd isn't that far behind. Whitaker was also the most technically sound. You'll never see a fighter throw punches as straight and compact as Pernell. He didn't have power, but he was incredibly skilled and efficient offensively.

Whitaker was more skilled than Mayweather and maybe even Leonard.

Yes i agree with this a prime SWEETPEA never got outboxed , Floyd is a great fighter , but.......
lets talk about him after maybe 2-3 more fights.
One thing tho Leonard has the class.
SWEETPEA had class.
Mayweather has no class outside the ring he is a PUNK.

Ready to be chastised for this but as regards text book old school boxing perhaps bernard hopkins should be included? Keep in mind im not a hopkins fan!

What does that have to do with the title "Is Floyd Mayweather The Most Textbook Skilled Fighter Since Sugar Ray Leonard ??" ???
Mayweather detractors point to his attitude which Equates to NOTHING in a Boxing ring 0
Nor does it effect his skill or accomplishments

What do you mean by this? IMO Pernell was as unorthodox as Roy Jones Jr. just in a different way. His defense how he dipped so low was definitely not conventional. Meldrick Taylor had good technique, but not the greatest defense, and he didn't box as much as he should have. Ricardo Lopez was a good boxer, but not at Floyd's level. I think Floyd maybe the most technically gifted fighter ever, or up there with Willie Pep.

Are you kidding me??
Do you remember when Leonard was commentating on a fight and for some reason went on a tangent about how kids shouldnt do drugs, then later that night got busted with cocaine? (he either had it on him, or the cops caught him buying it)
CLASS ACT!!!!

you shouldn't be chastised for that comment. hopkins is a good example of a good textbook fighter. especialy when it comes to his defense. i think people forget him because he's not at fast or flashy.

Leonard didn't have class neither did Whitaker they all talk trash its just to hype the fight Mayweather called Gatti a bum then after fight he gave Gatti respectful comments i have never seen Mayweather do anything different to any other boxer.

Whitaker was definitely considered a showboat and was considered the cockiest fighter in the sport.
I can't really remember him trashing an opponent before a fight during the pre-fight hype, but he would definitely taunt guys in the ring. He'd wrap a guy's head with his right arm and then throw a behind the back punch with his left hand... he'd spin guys and punch them from behind, he'd do all types of stuff.
And he pulled Roger Mayweather's trunks down in the middle of a fight!

Yea like i said most boxers are cocky i like Leonard, Whitaker, Mayweather, there not classiest guys in the sport but who cares i think thats where fans go wrong this isn't a popularity contest this is fighting as long as they don't say racist comments or ect who really cares i watch them for there skills not how nice they are outside the ring.

Re: Is Floyd Mayweather The Most Textbook Skilled Fighter Since Sugar Ray Leonard ??
Between SRL, Whitaker and PBF, I think SRL is the most complete boxer of the three. Whitaker was all defense... and while it's easy to marvel at, you gotta have a good offense to go along with it. PBF is fantastic, but I'm not much into the shoulder-roll type defense. And sometimes Floyd can also pay too much attention to defense, at the expense of his offense.
Sugar Ray was pretty awesome on both sides of the fence. And don't forget... he had some classic battles with some of history's best fighters (Hearns, Duran, Hagler, Benitez). That alone puts him a cut above Whitaker and Floyd, IMO.

i like all these guys. they fight the way i enjoy. some would say there boring but i love guys that can put on a boxing lesson.

Sugar RAy Leonard finishes BIG, he knocks you out and punishes you AND thats against elite fighters TOO. Floyd Maywheater does not he just gets away with u.d and s.d with no elite fighters.
PLEASE STOP COMPARING FLOYD TO REAL GREATS....THANK YOU ;D

Floyd at lower weights would finish big i don't think you have seen enough Mayweather fights because in most fights he breaks down opponents with hard crisp punching and why can't i compare him to the greats because you dislike Mayweather ?? imo Mayweather is a great we have to find little clips of him actually being hit clean and you don't think thats a great ??

The one thing floyd is truely good at is HANDPICKING OPPENENTS buddy ;)
I have seen most of floyds fights, yes he was better in the featherweight class but that doesn't make him a great like sugar ray leonard. Floyd beat chico and castillo(once) and draw or lost to castillo(once). floyd is another american fight that goes up weight to capture abc titles in a corrupted sport. Real great fighters would of embarrase slow no power baldomir, Real great fighters would of done what he said he'll do to oscar. Real great fighters would of took on hatton 3 years ago, not when its clear Hatton is the weakest of the best welterweights(shane,williams,margarito....I mean who can hatton beat amonst the best in welterweights now). If you want to talk about how great floyd is we can't just look at his best days in the lower weight class where he beat chico and castillo those two the best in his resume, but are not great fighters. He could of took on koysta, casamayor even freitas. Great fighters take on everyone, and great fighters take titles from champions. Not like how oscar and baldomir had to be the aggressor when its floyd thats suppose to take the title from thems since they are the champ. Its BULLSHIT one or two clean shot buys floyd a round and for the rest of the round he just avoids getting knock the fwock out.
Floyd is skilled but he ain't got that "it" factor that GREATS DO. nobody is going to remember a guy who beat chico, castillo, baldomir, oscar. All of those guys have an average lost of ......FOUR!!! come on now. Now he is taking on hatton undefeated but floyd is smart he knows he rather fight this guy then those tougher oppenents in 147. Fraud is not Great, I mean FLOYD. i ACTUALLY like floyd but since his fans are trying to say his a great like sugar ray, I got to say my part because its disrespectful to them real greats. Floyd may fool you guys but he ain't fooling me, I know his got skills but it take more then that to be GREAT.

Well Hatton has made bigger name for himself so the fight with Mayweather is even more of a risk for Mayweather now and yet again whole point of boxing is hit and not get hit but Floyd has proved he can brawl so i don't see why he has to keep doing it ?? thats not his fighting style and he has been in some exciting fights aswell.
The one thing floyd is truely good at is HANDPICKING OPPENENTS buddy ;)
I don't understand this at all.
Mayweather moved up to Oscars weight and and outboxed so he handpicked that fight ??
Corrales was 33-0 and was dangerous puncher this fight was consider 50-50 did he hand pick this fight ??
Jesus Chavez at 36-1 was considered dangerous he hand picked this fight ??
Jose Luis Castillo 45-4 was considered dangerous did he hand pick this fight ??
I could go on but i won't bother.
Why does every fighter have to be the aggressor to be great champion i don't understand that at all Whitaker was never the aggressor yet he is considered an all time great.

Would he have moved up at 154 if he was to fight winky there, not old oscar?
Would he had fought chico if chico was brain dead from all of his outside the ring troubles.
Chavez suppose to be an easy fight, Castillo turned out not so easy ;)
who else have floyd fought?
LETS COMPARE floyds resume to Sugar Ray Leonard, let see if you still think his great?
Floyd has a lot of easy oppenents hand picked for the likings of his style.
You know what lets just agree to disagree, if you think floyd is Great well thats you but I know he isn't unless he dominates from now and til he really retires. I admire a boxing lesson but only when its total domination not i hit you once...hmm I just got to avoid getting knock out to win the round....SHYT!

I think Floyd is more technical than most I've seen, but that doesn't make him better. Whitaker was not very text-book in actuality, neither was Meldrick Taylor. What's with those two choices? Lopez is a good shout though.
Leonard and Whitaker are better than Floyd, but he is more technical and orthodox than either.

You call Whitaker unorthodox and then say Willie Pep is technical? Do you even know what you're talking about? And Lopez was a much smaller boxer than Floyd, but his technique was definitely on his level and he ranks close on an All Time list to Floyd.

Get off this forum, go and actually watch a Whitaker fight other than his fight with De La Hoya when he was past his prime, do some research, and come back here after you've learned something and apologize. Whitaker threw 100 punches per round and over 1000 per fight in his prime, he had one of the best southpaw jabs of all time, and was constantly pumping it out. He could throw combos and avoid your shots at the same time. Mayweather is a pot-shotter and a mover, Whitaker stood in front of you throwing more than one punch and made you miss. Saying Whitaker had no offense shows you have NO CLUE what you're talking about. His workrate was amazing, way better offense than Floyd.

Agreed 100%.
I think both Pernell and Mayweather have much more "textbook" skill than Leonard, but I'd have to give the athletic advantage to Leonard in both those cases due to his superior strength/punching power.

Re: Is Floyd Mayweather The Most Textbook Skilled Fighter Since Sugar Ray Leonard ??
Forgive me coming in late on this one and I ain't read all the posts as yet, Mayweather I love to bits and feel his p4p ranking is justified at present, and though this may seem picky I have to say no way Is Floyd Mayweather The Most Textbook Skilled Fighter Since Sugar Ray Leonard ??,
Purely because as with Ray Leonard, they dont box from the text book, which manual teaches to throw 2 or 3 lead right hands (Unless your a southie that is) or to shuffle ya feet and or talk with the commentators mid bash up, none I believe......but the extras they put in is what goes towards making them great... love em or hate em, but ya gotta respect em. :beerchug:
-
Re: Is Floyd Mayweather The Most Textbook Skilled Fighter Since Sugar Ray Leonard ??
his defense is very much textbook. you could make a case the his offense isn't as textbook as it use to be because he doesn't use the jab as much as he use to. i guess it all depends on what textbook you study from.
-
Re: Is Floyd Mayweather The Most Textbook Skilled Fighter Since Sugar Ray Leonard ??
Ok look i dont know much about Whitaker but i have watched alot of SRL and some PBF and if you are comparing who they beat SRL hands down wins it Wilfred Benitez, Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns, and Marvin Hagler come on the PBF is undefeated but the best he beat was a old oscar a far form shot but still a old oscar its hard to compare SRL because he is the ALI of lower wieghts.

This thread was supposed to be about skills not who they beat otherwise i wouldn't have included Taylor.
-
Re: Is Floyd Mayweather The Most Textbook Skilled Fighter Since Sugar Ray Leonard ??
Well they are way different when it comes to styles Ice it is kinda hard to compare i just through out who they beat beacause some brought it up earlier about what they acomplished
-
Re: Is Floyd Mayweather The Most Textbook Skilled Fighter Since Sugar Ray Leonard ??
Sorry bro...can't compare PBF with the greats yet. He has some business to take of at welterweights. He needs to beat these guys (Hatton, Cotto, Mosley, Williams, Margarito) Not no 36 year old Baldomir. He needs to fight those in their prime. Take a chance at fighting a real slugger. Until then, their is no way he can be compared with SRL or any other great. Not yet. I hope he doesn't go on and says "I retire" after the Hatton fight. You know Larry Merchant is gonna ask him after the Hatton fight what about Mosley? what about Cotto? If he beats Hatton.

You guys are missing the point. We are not saying Floyd is as great as SRL. We are saying he has more TEXTBOOK boxing skills, not who was the better fighter.
And what the hell is with all of you romanticizing Sugar Ray Leonard. "Ohhh Floyd can't be compared to him, Floyd dodges everyone, SRL fought everyone!"
What the fuck? Is this the same SRL who ducked Aaron Pryor his whole career? The same SRL who retired instead of fighting Hagler, came back, won a controversial split decision against Hagler by RUNNING for 12 rounds (something you guys would CRUFICY Floyd for doing), and then retired and would never go near Hagler again? You guys talk like SRL was some kind of ultra male, but he had his history of shady shit and ducking people too.

:coolclick: Mista Flicker ;) Agreed SRL got a few little questionable things in his career
-
Re: Is Floyd Mayweather The Most Textbook Skilled Fighter Since Sugar Ray Leonard ??
Two complete different fighters. Floyd is Floyd and Ray was Ray... Both very gifted but... Floyd's career will have more longetivy based on lack of competition or willingness to step up on Floyds part but...It looks as though Floyd is stepping up and he should do the following...
Fight Ricky = A Duran type Fighter
Fight Cotto = A Hagler like character
Fight Williams = A Hearns like creature
These fights will cement Floyd's legacy IMO.
If Floyd comes out of these fights unscaved, he could be fighting until he is 40 with his style. ;D
Ray took too much punishment and too many risks. Floyd don't take any punishment and he is not a risky fighter in the sense that Ray was.
Floyd is all business while Ray was more of an entertainer in the ring. Both very smart and went about fighting in their own way. Floyd's Defense is good but the tests are in the names above.
Ray would try to eat you up with flurries and secure rounds before the bell sounded and Floyd defends more while eating you up with pop shots thru and thru. Apples and oranges folks.

What the F***? Is this the same SRL who ducked Aaron Pryor his whole career? The same SRL who retired instead of fighting Hagler, came back, won a controversial split decision against Hagler by RUNNING for 12 rounds (something you guys would CRUFICY Floyd for doing), and then retired and would never go near Hagler again? You guys talk like SRL was some kind of ultra male, but he had his history of shady S*** and ducking people too.
:coolclick: Mista Flicker ;) Agreed SRL got a few little questionable things in his career
On point with Pryor.
Pryor was a nightmare. He was the Joe Fraizer of his era. He would have gave Ray a war.
Ray retired becuase of the injury he sustained against Hearns.
He came out of retirement to fight Hagler and then Hagler retired and said he was disgusted and would never come back.
So, should Castillo have quit and retired? He was robbed against Floyd.
Fudge Hagler.
Sugar Ray/Hagler was a good fight. Ray won. Stop crying.

Ice im sorry dude but the Mayweather Corrales fight was not 50/50 Flyd was a 2/9 shot to win the fight, a heavy favourite, he is a great fighter, but not in SRL league imo.

Re: Is Floyd Mayweather The Most Textbook Skilled Fighter Since Sugar Ray Leonard ??
Honest guys, not trying to be controversial, i rate prime Shane mosely, just as good as leonard and perhaps ahead of Floyd.Im speaking of Lightweight mosely thru to the mosely that beat De la hoya. I feel he would have beaten Floyd.

Well mosley was a lighter wieght in his prime then leonard was so it hard for me to compare
