It’s Khan Next for Scott Lawton

On 6th October Scott Lawton, Stoke’s English lightweight champion, will step out of the shadows and into the national spotlight when he becomes the challenger to media golden boy Amir Khan. The contest will take place over the championship distance of 12 rounds at Nottingham Ice Area on 6th October. The event is to be promoted by Sports Network (Frank Warren) and the bout will be shown live on ITV.

Lawton will now begin his preparations as he aims to become the first boxer to defeat the former Olympic silver medallist in the professional ring. Lawton had originally been scheduled to defend his English belt in Stoke on the preceding Saturday but will now relinquish his title in favour of the opportunity to fight Amir Khan.

Khan is now undefeated in 13 pro bouts and has sent 10 of his opponents back to the changing room before the allotted rounds had been concluded. Khan’s critics maintain that he is yet to be tested and that he has yet to face an opponent that is renowned for his punching power. The same critics will also no doubt contend that Scott Lawton fits a similar mode since he is known for his boxing ability rather than his punching power.

However many of the critic’s fail to acknowledge that Khan is undoubtedly a talented boxer and posses remarkable hand speed. What his punches lack in potency he can more than adequately compensate for with volume; the number of shots landing has simply worn many of his previous opponents down.

Lawton is not readily daunted by reputations however and will not be phased by the ‘media hype’ surrounding Amir. In March Lawton faced champion Jon Thaxton in a British title clash and, against all the odds, ran Thaxton close until he sustained a cut to his forehead which effectively ended his challenge. Thaxton, a heavy hitter, continues to be avoided by most domestic lightweights including Khan.

Lawton will also gain inspiration from Scotsman Willie Limmond who, although beaten by Khan, did despatch the Bolton fighter to the canvas during their Commonwealth clash last month. Limmond, who had moved up a division from super-featherweight to take the title last November, is another fighter who was renowned for his skill rather than the ferocity of his punches.

Unlike Limmond, Scott is a genuine lightweight and has campaigned in the division throughout his career. Neither will Lawton, at 5’ 10” (the same as Khan), face the same height disadvantage as the Scot. Lawton will also be confident that, should he send Khan to the canvas, he will not let him recover and suffer the same fate as Limmond.

Mick Carney, Scott Lawton’s manager, today said: “It’s a great opportunity for Scott. We thought that the Thaxton fight was a big event but this is even bigger because of the attention that Amir Khan attracts.”

“Khan is a great prospect but we think he is beatable and that Scott has the wherewithal to get the job done. It won’t be easy though and we will need to do our homework; Scott will need to prepare properly too. He’s a consummate professional though and he won’t leave anything to chance. Whatever the result, I am confident that Scott will emerge with an immense amount of credit.”

“I would also like to add that it has been a pleasure negotiating with Sports Network, they have handled everything very professionally.”

Whatever the critics say about Scott Lawton he is a worthy challenger to Khan’s crown as he is skilful opponent and, provided he avoids the temptation to stand and slug it out, it’s certainly a contest that the Potteries man has the potential to win.

Scott impressed me when i saw him against Thaxton and to be honest one day one of these light punchers they keep feeding Khan will KO him.... i would love it to be Scott 8)

Lawton seems about right.

At the very least it'll give a nice look at the form where Thaxton is concerned.

Khan will win unfortunately. He should be fighting Thaxton.

Not a bad way for Frank Warren to keep the Khan bandwagon going by giving him fighters that dont have a ko punch,and he's making alot of money from Khan at the same time.

This is one that Scott can certainly win. Khan showed a chink in his armour against Limmond and Lawton can exploit it. At least he's a genuine lightweight and he's tall. He's an accomplished boxer with a stinging jab. So long as he doesn't try to mix it with Khan he can come out on top.

I'd LOVE Scott to win this one......he's my local boxer and a nice guy too 8)

Sounds like the right level opponent for Khan right now. Never seen him fight though, and he really is a light hitter judging by his record.

Khan should fight Graham Earl after this fight.

Earl will drag him into the trenches and ruin him imo :)

Thats what I want to see, if he can come out of the trenches.

I'd like to see him against Earl as well. Test fi can can keep his concentration aginst a dangerous opponent.

For me this is another decent progression fight, and Khan fighting someone his own height willl be a different challenge for him, and we also get to see what he's learnt after he came so close to being stopped against Limond.

Lawton did alright with Thaxton, and will give Khan a good run for his money, but I see Khan's handspeed and workrate giving him the edge. I also see Oliver Harrison having babies as he screams at the top of his voice "Keep your f***ing hands up" every 30 seconds.

Undercard takes shape

The October 6 card from the Nottingham Arena topped by Amir Khan’s first Commonwealth Lightweight title defence against Scott Lawton is taking shape.

Bradley Pryce looks set to defend his Commonwealth Light Middleweight crown against 26 year-old Martin Concepcion. Both men are coming off impressive stoppage wins. Pryce stopped Anthony Small inside six exciting rounds, whilst Concepcion inflicted the first defeat on Manchester’s Matthew Hall with a first round stoppage.

Manchester Super Featherweight Steven Bell finally gets a title opportunity when he faces Femi Fehintola for the vacant English title. Bell is currently undefeated in 15 bouts and will start favourite against the Bradford based Fehintola, who challenged for the British title in November 2006.

Dagenham’s Kevin Mitchell looks set to face British champ Carl Johanneson early next year, but he will make a defence of his Commonwealth crown on the show.

There also looks to be a return to action for Graham Earl, who hasn’t boxed since losing a WBO lightweight title challenge to Michael Katsidis in February, in what is certainly a candidate for Fight of the Year.

Undefeated Sheffield welterweight Kell Brook has also been added to the card.

Not looking like a bad undercard...but the standout bout for me is Bell v Fehintola. I've liked Fehintola's performances when I've seen him, and although a bit feather-fisted, I think he showed lots of guts against Johanneson, and might give Bell a fair run for his money.

As for Earl, Mitchell and Brook, I doubt Warren will put anyone of any note in against them. Pryce is worth a look too though, but I doubt Concepcion's career has taken such a big swing back in the right direction.

Don't no much about Lawton but by all accounts he's good but not very good. Kahn has the potential to be very good very soon and i no he'll be putting in the work after the limond scare.

As were on the subject of warren cards anyone got any news on Mark Jennings, i'v seen him a couple of times live but never on tv, really liked his style.

funny thing is a few fights back Khans lot didn't want him, now Khan looked scrappy in his last fight they're looking for someone who will fall down. ;)
