Greatest performance?
Ok, I know how we all hate to narrow S*** down and we perfer to make a list, but for this thread I want to know what everyone thinks is THE SINGLE best virtuoso performance. The criteria should be the dominance of the performance and the skill displayed by the athlete in question, but the quality of the opponent should play a big factor in the decision. Obviously, dominating a quality opponent makes for a much better performance than dominating a journeyman or a bum.
I'm thinking Floyd Mayweather vs. Diego Corrales. Diego was a top-level opponent who was like 34-0 at the time with 27 KOs and Floyd just obliterated him. I really think this was Floyd at his absolute best. Amazing foot speed, hand speed, ring generalship, defense, accuracy. He looked like the PERFECT fighter. Diego landed in single digits iin EVERY single round.
No lists, no "honorable mentions", just pick ONE performance.

Foreman vs Frazier because they were both great fighters and I knew George would win but I didnt know he would knock him out as much as he did. Frazier was a great fighter and george made him look like like he couldn't even defend himself

Re: Greatest performance?
Morales Paquiao I
Manny should have won, but my man, favorite boxer, just did everything right.
The only thing was he went lefty to show off and was hurt in the closing seconds.
Pacquiao was and is a dangerous storm. Inside and out of the ring.

Re: Greatest performance?
Whittaker vs Chavez was a masterful performance is first one to my mind, Sweet P had several amazing ones..
Meldrick Taylor vs Buddy McGirt
Hopkins vs Trinidad
Duran vs Barkley, not that it was anywhere close to a dominating performance but consider all things it was a GREAT win for Duran.
-
Re: Greatest performance?
Mosley vs De la hoya. Mosley was masterful with his jabs.
-
Re: Greatest performance?
Ali V Foreman...Ali was given no chance by the majority of Boxing scribes
PBF V DLH....PBF comes from 130lb to 154lb to beat a seasoned DLH who had been fighting at 147 and over for the past 10 years, it was a great effort.
Robinson V Maxim for Light Heavy title in 1952... Only the heat beats Sugar Ray!
Leonard V Hagler...after long lay off Leonard beats long reigning Middleweight champ, controversy or not this was a mighty effort.
Corrales V Castillo....Corrales is almost out on his feet after two big knockdowns and who would have blamed the ref if he had of stopped it, then he gets up and knocks out Castillo in the very same round!
-
Re: Greatest performance?
Wilfred Benitez over Antonio Cervantes at age 17 to take the Junior Welterweight title. Amazing skills shown by Benitez. Cervantes finishes strong but it wasn't enough.
Eusebio Pedroza vs Patrick Ford. This is my honorable mention which is against the rules so you can ignore it.

Muhammad Ali against Cleveland Williams .... Houston Astrodome, 1966.
Watch this fight and you will see what I mean - absolute virtuosity.

Re: Greatest performance?
If I had to pick just one.....
Leonard Vs Hearns 1 comes to mind.....Ray was the under dog against the big punching Hearns....He boxed beautifully and then made the switch to puncher later in the fight switching roles......Showing he was a complete fighter able to handle any situation
-
Re: Greatest performance?
Tough to pick just one, but since I'm a fan I have to go for Joe v Jeff.

Is that really you Chuck?

Re: Greatest performance?
Curry v McCrory - both undefeated, unifying the titles and a peach of a left hook. I do not know how he got so much power out of such a short distance and leverage. Rewind and watch that punch all the time.
Roy Jones v Montell Griffith 2 - no explanation needed.

Re: Greatest performance?
Dax I make you right, That night They Leonard and Hearns were just about at there best. I beleive that night I was watching the two best Welters Ive ever seen it was electric. On that night both would have beaten any welter Ive seen Living or dead. It had everything from the first bell, it was a joy to watch live. I did money that night but became a fan of Leonards, He proved he had it all

Re: Greatest performance?
Foreman vs Frazier - he just ripped him apart to the point where Joe looked like a tune-up fight!
Mayweather vs Gatti - At the time i thought Gatti had a chance, but during the fight i realized how wrong i was.
Ali vs Liston - Liston was a crazy favorite and Ali just taught him a lesson.
Pacquiao vs Barrera - Pacquiao was just rising in stardom and would not stop connecting for 11 rounds against the best in the division.

Re: Greatest performance?
Aumah Nelson v Jeff Fenech 2
Nelson had just got a debatable draw. So went to Oz and one in Fenechs back garden flooring him 3 times before the ref stopped it.

Should never have got the opportunity. Was beaten by atleast 4 rounds in the first fight.

Re: Greatest performance?
Gotta go with Leonard Duran 2... that seventh round was ridiculous, Leonard just mind fwocked Duran like he was beating down a 12 year old during recess

Re: Greatest performance?
Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Diego Corrales
Undefeated Corrales didn't land as much as 10 punches in a round over the course of 10 rounds. Mayweather systematically broke him down with precision punching and deceptive power, knocking Corrales 5 times enroute to a 10th round TKO.

I'd have to totally disagree with you man.
Corrales was green and even when he was in his prime his biggest win was against Casamayor. He had to cheat against Castillo to win a classic fight. But Corrales isn't known for his skill and during that time Corrales was totally weight drained... the guy is around 5 11.

Are u kidding? Corrales Green? He was 34-0 with 4 title defenses. He beat Casamayor, Castillo and Frietas in 3 of his 4 fights after the PBF fight. Stop trying to discredit floyd.

You got that out there right before me.............. cc
Not to mention, that was only Floyd's 24th pro fight. So if either one of them was green, it was Mayweather ;)

Hatton v Tszyu
Pacquiao v Barrera (My jaw hit the ground when I saw that)
Hatton v Mayweather (It's just a matter of time in my mind, Mayweather is already 38-1)

Collazo had Hatton rocking and reeling quite few times especially in 12th where he was lucky the ref didn't call it a knockdown first time i see it i had Hatton winning by 1 point seeing it again i had Collazo winning by 1 point.

Collazo? You must be having a huge giraffe there fella, there's nothing to go on to make you think Collazo won that fight. 3 judges, punch stats, most of all, SENSE! How could anyone think Hatton lost that fight. Jaded eyes, that's all I can say. Watch it again.
VD, are you on King's payroll?

Re: Greatest performance?
Most recent fight that stands out in my mind for virtuoso performance is Calzaghe vs Lacy. A true beat down from beginning to end.

So your going by punchstats ?? you should know better than that Collazo landed cleaner shots Hatton was ragged with alot of his punches Hatton was the one that got rocked many times and bit silly on your part with the last comment because i think your favorite fighter lost one fight i don't go by punchstats i watched the fight and i thought Collazo landed cleaner better punches.

Not just punchstats mate (although they count for much more than people give credit for). Hatton clearly won the first 4 rounds, clearly won 10 and 11, and maybe won the 6th 7th, and the 8th. The rest goes to Collazo. The rounds you can argue are the 6th, 7th and the 8th. Even if Collazo won them rounds, he's down 114-113. The widest possible margine is 116-111 to Hatton, the narrowest is 114-113. Everything reflects that, no matter how you look at it.
One point I can see for arguments sake is the 12th being a 10-8 to Collazo, amking it a 113-113 draw, but I don't really think it was enoug hfor a 10-8 to Collazo. For the first 30 seconds, and the last 60 seconds, Hatton was fighting well. No doubt that COllazo was great in that fight, and he sure as hell won some rounds (The 5th was amazing, Hatton couldn't get near him, I was so impressed by him), but Hatton broke him late on, In the 10th and 11th he was being thrown round like a rag doll, and for the first 3 and a half rounds rounds he was like a rabbit in headlights.
