Good for him, I'm sure he knows the clock is ticking & he's getting up there in age. Being out 2 years didn't help so he better fight as much as he can now. He wanted Mayorga too so with the Vargas bout in doubt, maybe he'll get that rematch he wants sooner.
The same guy Mayorga beat a few years back ? :o I didn't realise he was still going where the hell is he ranked ? ???
He had nagging injuries when he fought Mayorga, a damaged shoulder that he couldn't afford to take time off for and heal.Quote:

Now he's taken time off and got healed up he still has time to be a major player.
If he hadn't have suffered the string of injuries in his earlier career his name would be up there with the likes of De La Hoya, Mosely, Trinidad etc as one of the best welterweights of the past decade.
Hopefully he'll have enough left to make up for lost time now.

Unlike punching power, boxing skills last longer. Vernon can still perform well because he has skills.

I agree with you BlackRazor about overselling it. The real bummer of the whole deal for Vernon immediately is that although he appears really in great shape....all these superfights coming up are going to make it difficult for him to sign a substantial fight perhaps....? I really want to see Vernon fight someone like Margarito or Cintron on an undercard.
What about Forrest - Clottey? I think Clottey would fit in well at 154 and that would make for an interesting clash.

I'm not sure if Forrest could make welterweight anymore, he's pretty old, and I think he would sacrifice a lot by going down in weight. He was as good as he's ever gonna be again in his last fight, imo.
A fight with Margarito probably isn't gonna happen. Margarito won't dare move up in weight again after Daniel Santos busted his face open en route to a TKO. Cintron would be interesting, but again...... is Kermit willing to make the jump in weight classes? Probably not.... There's some good money fights at welterweight that pose much less of a risk than a Forrest fight.
Forrest's best option right now is to rematch Mayorga, but only at 154. It would help his legacy tons, make him a pretty good amount of money, and I would favor Forrest heavily in this fight. Forrest beats him convincingly enough, and maybe he could set up a big ppv with Delahoya (assuming Oscar is willing to go back up)
Oscar might actually take the fight assuming that Mayweather and Mosley both beat their upcoming opponents, because Mayweather and Mosley have already beaten Delahoya convincingly. Hatton and Cotto fights wouldn't be nearly as attractive with them coming off losses to guys that already beat Delahoya.
Oscar never fought Forrest, and Forrest beat Mosley (who beat Oscar twice) pretty one-sidedly
That would put Forrest right back in the spotlight in less than a year
Roman K is the best fighter at 154.
Real good points. I had forgotten that Marg had already went up in wieght with bad consequences. And I believe you are right about Cintron moving up too......there really isn't any motive for anyone that can still make 147 to move up to 154 (at this time). If Forrest uses his punch 'n clinch action like he used against Mosley he should be able to defeat Spinks. He's big enough, if he can clear out the champs at 154, I'd like to see him at 160.
