TOP 3 COUNTRIES WITH GREAT BOXERS

I'm wondering what are the top 3 countries which have produced great boxers.

I'm picking:

1.Mexico
2. United States
3. Philippines and UK (tie)

I think this very much depends on the wieght divisions.

On a P4P scale.

1. Puerto Rico (Such a small island with a long history of champions)
2. Mexico (Too many great champions to name past, present, and future.)
3. U.S. (Boxing has long lost it's prestige as far as top tier sports go. Regardless of the size of the U.S. there just aren't that many young kids lining up to be fighters. Still many great fighters are being produced and many remain to be seen, eventhough the participation probably isn't anywhere near what it used to be.

Honorable mention: Philippines (By the way things are going they should be in the same conversation within the next few years, but not yet IMHO.)

weight divisions does not matter here. what matters is the recognition of the fighters as greats in boxing.

cc for the input Joerod. Puerto Rico has really produced more title holders than the Philippines. 53 title holders against 37 from the Philippines.

All time, it is the U.S. and there is absolutely no argument to be had really.

Current day, well I still think the U.S. but it is a lot closer. Mexico and the Phillippines dominate everything under 140 lbs.

Oh by recongnition I agree to Beanflicker's list. I thought the question was who has prodcued the best fighters regardless of recognition........like Cuba would fit that criteria......but I understand now.

Well someone mentioned russia, and they're not even close yet, but I don't think its for a lack of fighters. It just that during soviet times they pretty much couldn't turn pro, now that the soviet unions been gone for a while we are seing plenty of boxers come from former soviet union countries, no greats among them yet really, but I'm sure there will be some/plenty in the future.

Admittedly, it's kind of a forgettable list. Ismael Laguna and Eusebio Pedroza are the ones that mostly stick out. But Panama has had 23 world champions, and with such a small population, it places high on a "per capita" basis.

CC back, Big Dan. Actually, you made me think 'cause the thread title is "Top 3 Countries with Great Boxers." Not all world champions have been "great boxers" (see John Ruiz). So in retrospect, I'd move Panama, the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela a bit further down the list. But overall, I think measuring the number of world champions per capita is a pretty fair measuring stick, given the size difference between countries.
