Teddy Atlas is a jackass.
I can't stand the guy. I know he knows his shyt when it comes to analyzing a fight, but so do half the people on this forum.
He has ZERO personality, and is possibly (along with Steve Farhood) the worst commentator in the history of boxing. I forget the exact fight, but one of his shining (sickening ;)) moments was when some guy was getting beat up in a fight pretty bad and Teddy (ever the drama queen) gets up and starts screaming "Stop the fight, Stop the fight!!!!" at the top of his lungs to the ref.
I don't need to start on his stupid ass analogies because many other members have brought these up before on other threads on here.
As far as his scoring of rounds........................
This is where Teddy's foolishness is unmatched.
I've seen him on many occasions score 10-9 rounds where he gives the guy that he mentioned he liked before the match even started a 10 even though he got knocked down. I swear I've even seen him score 8-7 rounds where there weren't any knockdowns. Let's not forget the Teddy Atlas trademark 10-10 rounds when the rounds weren't even close.
I've heard people say he is unbiased and that he speaks nothing but the truth. I have no idea where people would ever see that. He is one of the most biased announcers I've ever seen. If he picks a guy before a fight, that just so happens to be the guy who wins rounds even though he got knocked down with their work rate, chin, poise, etc. etc. ::**
I guess I'm done for now, but I may come back to modify this thread as I remember more things that make Teddy Atlas such a fool.
-
Re: Teddy Atlas is a jackass.
Well, just about everything you said is right there. He does all that stuff, and his scorecards are simply nauseating. And he'll focus on one miniscule thing that isn't effecting the fight much and dwell on it for rounds at a time. The analogies are time consuming and mind numbing. The "Stop this fight ref" was in the Ricky Quiles - Nate Cambell bout. It was like the last minute of the fight and it didn't need to be stopped then anymore then it did three rounds before. Definitely a flare for the dramatic.
Still, love the X's and O's stuff because you can tell he is nothing but an old trainer and outside of that, he is amusing to me. Someone like Jim Lampley ignoring any offense a fighter puts on and Merchant calling Winky a shot fighter will make me pull my hair out ten times more then Atlas working himself into a frenzy ever will.
-
Re: Teddy Atlas is a jackass.
I've been watching Teddy for years now and all I've ever seen is a fair and unbiased announcer. Sure he touts the attributes of the favored fighter but he is always willing to point out what that fighter is doing wrong as well.
I've seen plenty of his 10-10 rounds but I have never seen an 8-7 round with no knockdowns. You have to admit that didn't really happen. I've also never seen him give a 10 round to a fighter that has been knocked down. I've seen him give 9-8 and 9-7 rounds and I could swear I've also seen him give a 10-6.
As for his yelling, I say keep it up and keep it loud. I don't think any commentator is as impassioned as he is when it comes to boxing. He cares about the fighters and the sport as a whole. I remember when there was this particularly horrible hometown decision that was way out there for a guy that had clearly lost. Teddy was screaming so loud "THIS IS WRONG! THIS IS WRONG!" i could tell he had abandoned any thought of talking into the mic and it sent chills up my spine. It was completely unprofessional and I thought it was going to cost him his job. But anyone who is willing to put himself out there in that way has definitely earned my respect.
I do give it to you on some of his analogies, they have gotten long winded in the past year but it's something I'm willing to overlook for all the good I feel he brings.
I will however, not fight you a bit on Steve Farhood being the worst. He has too many problems to list here.
-
Re: Teddy Atlas is a jackass.
I am going to have to agree with frozensolid_702. What bothers me even more is that Joe T. Always agrees with him. I don't ever recall Joe T not seeing eye to eye with Teddy. Like I have never heard Joe T question one of Teddy's score scards. Why doesn't Joe have a score card? Yes Teddy is baised and if the fighter is from the East Coast, Teddy and Joe will pull out their skirts and poms poms and cheer away for the East Coast fighter even if the East Coast fighter is not doing anything let alone winning the fight.
In closing, I too hate Teddy 'Marble Mouth' Atlas and his yes man lacky Joe T. Although Joe T is more bearable.
Another Pet Peeve is that Teddy won't stop talking even if there is some live action going on the ring. He will go on and on with his phuking stupid analogies until he is done. Sometimes Teddy can just take away from a fight.
-
Re: Teddy Atlas is a jackass.
Teddy has his faults but personally I think he's part of the boxing establishment and would hate to see him gone.
He is sometimes a little off with his scoring and certainly biased as they come.
I remember he did one of his lists a while back about the Top 10 greatest Southpaws ever. He really annoyed my by having Michael Moorer at number 5 ??? but didn't even include Joe Calzaghe.
Still he' didn't train Joe so I guess he was just sticking with his own. :-\
-
Re: Teddy Atlas is a jackass.
If Teddy was gone we would all miss him, he brings some much needed passion to the table and it matters not if we agree with his style or not, he is a personality and i kind of like his gung ho style.

What fight did Teddy score a round 8-7 with no knock downs? I find that hard to believe.

LOL, I recall that - but don't remember the fight either. I think Teddy said he was going to do it & then Joe T. encouraged him to do it.

Re: Teddy Atlas is a jackass.
Well, if HBO announced they were getting rid of Max ''Jim! I gotta tell ya...'' Kellerman to replace him with ''He's got his ear-muffs on'' Atlas. It would absolutely make my month. ::**
I hate HBO's team with a passion. Even the guests.
They never seem to be on the same page, they argue about the trivial things of the previous round through the round intervals and waaaaay into the current round, they dont seem to have any chemistry, they spend more time correcting them selves than commenting on the current action and for fucks-sake Kellerman....!!! Why the fuck do you sound like that when you talk?! SHUT UP!!!! >:mad
It so much easier to watch a fight on HBO with the volume off.
if you compare Sky sports & HBOs coverage of Hatton V Urango & Mayweather V Dela Hoya you'll see what i mean ;)
-
Re: Teddy Atlas is a jackass.
I like Teddy and think he's usually fair. I didn't object to him trying to stop the Quiles v Campbell fight because I had Nate on a KO prop at +300. And Quiles is now very damaged goods.
One analogy or comment that Atlas has used frequently that is funny is: 'boxing takes more than just strength. If that (strength) is all it took (to succeed) then all the guys walking around muscle beach would be champs.' :lifter: That cracks me up.
Another classic is; " A man born round don't(sic) die square.
Teddy's a classic. :lolololol:

Hell no.
-
Re: Teddy Atlas is a jackass.
Teddy has good passion but he's just an old trainer, he is very biased if he picks a fighter to win and sees they're struggling. I like his scorecards sometimes though, It's better than 10-9's all the time. It seems nowadays you have to pound your opponent into the ground to score a 10-6 round, yet when someone gets outboxed with ease and dominates a round but doesn't put his guy down it still gets scored as 10-9.
-
Re: Teddy Atlas is a jackass.
Teddy also held a loaded gun to Tyson's head and then pulled the trigger shooting the ground next to him >:mad
He always gives long winded responses to simple questions. Like when he made his picks on cotto-mosley, pac-barrera II, etc he gave pointless long rambling anecdotes and wouldve gotten completely off topic had Brian Kenny not been there to drag him in. I like Brian Kenny.
I think Joe Tessitore's job is to sit and nod while staring admirably at teddy...he never disagrees, just tries to keep teddy's increasingly senile ramblings in check.
For the most part I think Atlas is alright, but there is a little to much "I have seen more than you can imagine and my words are gold" mentality.

I'm sure somebody realized it and stuck him at commentating vice making him a judge. Good points. I too agree with his round by round crazy scoring. Do you think he's going to have Judah losing this upcoming friday? hahaha. He probably will!

That pretty much covers all his commentary.

I love Teddy Atlas, he is my favorite commentator in all of boxing. He kind of reminds me of Don Cherry, if anyone knows who that is.

I like Atlas cause hes always for the fighters. Anyone who saw the Augustus-Burton fight a couple years ago knows Atlas is not afraid to speak his mind if a fighter is being treated unfairly, or should not be in the ring or whatever. Not a lot of comentators whould go to the legnths Teddy goes so I give him credit.

all &all, teddys ok.I respect him for his stance for fighters and there wellbeing, although sometimes he comes off really "shortbus-ish" (simple for all of u non yanks). He really does tell it like it is,No bulls#@t.I use to love the spats he and max kellerman would get into on the air.Yeh,teddy can sometimes sound like he has a mouth full of marbles & peanutbutter (not as bad as pretty boys daddy) and can be very hard to listen to. Have you ever noticed between rounds, when they cut back from commercials, the poor guy is hacking and coughing so loud?Is he sick, sorry teddy but get this man some cough syrup.

I noticed he was coughing bad last week. He is either chocking on the marbles or the peanut butter.

Re: Teddy Atlas is a jackass.
He may be an a decent guy but Teddy's annoying as all hell, I've been saying that for a long time.
The repetition, he just never shuts up about the same things. Never stops talking and considering that its amazing how little he actually says, its just the shame shit over and over.
Its always the same things. Keep your left hand up for gods sake, you've got to raise it slightly to get it in position to jab. This guy has more options, he can fight on the inside or the outside. This guy's taller, he should be jabbing more and fighting on the outside-it doesn't really matter if the guy's a better inside fighter than an outside fighter.
I agree though with whoever that said it, Tessitore doesn't help. Bob Papa was good for them, much better than Tessitore.

Let's see if Teddy reinforces this thread tonight. FNF should be on already, but ESPN has decided that it is more important to televise the NASCAR drivers post race interviews.

FNF got some good guests tonight.
So far Ted is not being a jackass yet.

Re: Teddy Atlas is a jackass.
Steve Farhood is without a doubt the worse commentator in the history of commentating. His nasal NYC whining voice makes fingernails scratching across a blackboard sound good. He claims he is a historian, but doesn't know very much about anything before 1990. His facial gyrations are weird. He calculates KO percentages wrongly. But what really bothers me is that he motor-mouths throurgh a fight nonstop thus making the mute button most compelling. Asisde from that, he is not too bad. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

referee: Dan Kelley | judge: Robert Paganelli 90-99 | judge: Ed Mosley 92-97 | judge: Jake (Jack) Richards 98-94 ~
Augustus penalized one point in 8th for spinning himself out of a clinch.
Richards was the only judge who had a pulse that night. Kelley should have been suspended. It was robbery in plain sight as Agustus whipped Burton's ass throughout the fight. What Kelley was doing was preventing Augustus from fighting his kind of unorthadox fight. It was a hometown decision. Atlas called it right. Teddy can be a real ass-h--- in person (not very fan friendly...kind of going Hollywood), but he can break a fight down better than anyone I have ever seen and he is pro-boxer, one of the few announcers who is willing to talk about reform. He gets my props for that, even though he does not respond to my emails. 99% of the boxing personalities I know do, but not Teddy.

cc back my friend :) Like Ted said it was a bad robbery and Teddy called out the officials after the fight and actually took some action i believe against the michigan boxing commision (at least I think that is where it was held). Anyways, the worst robbery I recall ever seeing. But your right it was also annonced wrong.

Good points on Atlas, I watched him on the finale of FNF and thought he did a very good job. I think was overly critical...he does have off-nights every so often, but who doesnt.

Well said.
Do you talk to Larry Merchant through email?? I would like to email him....
Agreed. I remember that. Didnt the announcer call it wrong? (MD when it should of been SD ??? )
Anyways, CC BoomBoom ;)
It was a robbery and Teddy said it was a robbery. Agustus avenged the "defeat" by brutal ko some time later.
I wonder if theres any footage on Youtube... Basically, there was more to it than that ;)
referee: Dan Kelley | judge: Robert Paganelli 90-99 | judge: Ed Mosley 92-97 | judge: Jake (Jack) Richards 98-94 ~
Augustus penalized one point in 8th for spinning himself out of a clinch.
Richards was the only judge who had a pulse that night. Kelley should have been suspended. It was robbery in plain sight as Agustus whipped Burton's a** throughout the fight. What Kelley was doing was preventing Augustus from fighting his kind of unorthadox fight. It was a hometown decision. Atlas called it right. Teddy can be a real a**-h--- in person (not very fan friendly...kind of going Hollywood), but he can break a fight down better than anyone I have ever seen and he is pro-boxer, one of the few announcers who is willing to talk about reform. He gets my props for that, even though he does not respond to my emails. 99% of the boxing personalities I know do, but not Teddy.

It seems nowadays you have to pound your opponent into the ground to score a 10-6 round, yet when someone gets outboxed with ease and dominates a round but doesn't put his guy down it still gets scored as 10-9.
I was about to say the same thing. But a judge should never 'pick' a certain fighter that he wants to win. I hope so this is not what Atlas is doing.
